LEAVE ME ALONE SAMMY BOY! It would cost more to implement than the gained efficiency. And I don't want eyes over my shoulder every time I drive, it's bad enough trying to run from the five-O.

@PaulDobson: Initial implementation would be quite expensive but if they required all new vehicles sold in the US to be equipped with one of these devices they could pass that cost on to the consumer (so we get screwed there too)... the computer system running the back end would be a massive investment but once they were able to automate a nationalized ticketing system it would basically print money unattended. Drop the amount of the individual fines and most people wouldn't bother fighting it... just make it more expensive to fight the automated ticket than to pay it and people will simply pay up.

Yes, they could make this a financially feasible revenue generator, don't think for a second that it would end at tax-per-mile.

What I find sickening with the Big Brother issue is this:

We still haven't raised the standards for driver testing, but we're ready to drop the hammer on people using advanced technology to track their every move (including ECU logs in court cases).

Can you imagine raising a kid to be carefree and mediocre, then kicking his ass every time he did something you didn't like?

You'd have a sociopath on your hands after not too long.

I am totally in favor of on-board computers that monitor mileage for purposes of taxation.

Why? Because this will be a lot easier to cheat than the current taxation which is built into gas prices. All you have to do is hack your on-board computer and roll back the virtual odometer. WIN!

Agreed, this is going to make hybrids and non-gasoline burning cars less attractive. Then again, there might be some sort of exemption status. Who knows.

@Sloop_John_B: Yes, you are right. This rewards people with gas-hogs (usually upper class people driving expensive SUVs) while increasing the tax paid by lower class people driving economy cars that get twice the mileage. I like the gas tax because it incentivizes efficiency while also mirroring the ascending income tax structure (so the people that can afford to pay more taxes do while the working poor can still afford to feed their children). Going to a per-mile tax system will reverse that current model and push the majority of the burden to lower class families while effectively giving escalade and bentley drivers a tax break.

Actually raising gas taxes would be effective in many ways--raising revenue, pushing automotive makers toward more efficient and alternative fuel vehicles, lowereing overall consumption/dependence on foreign oil, and cutting back on pollution from unnecessary driving.

They (government/w**kers) are testing the pay per mile in the U.K. next year. Yeah they use the excuse of it'll be cheaper than fuel tax, well that's all bollocks, they are just trying to find a way to tax people that are using environmentally friendly cars that use less or no fossil fuels.
