For years I thought Fantasy Island was a great show. I just loved it.
Then I grew up. And I saw Star Trek II. The Motion Picture was just a long jerk-off over the ship and bringing the characters back from the grave of cancellation. But Wrath of Khan was a great movie, a brilliantly conceived ending to a storyline that was never fully resolved during the original series.
And what made it great? Montalban. His Khan was gleefully sociopathic, a cheerfully brilliant despot so utterly certain of his superiority, so saturated with hatred for the lesser creatures that dared to defy him, that the truth of his evil couldn't be denied. While it was great to watch Kirk & Co. go gallavanting across the galaxy on a well-written adventure, no adventure is worth it without a really good bad guy. And Ricardo Montalban wore that persona like it was his favorite pair of slippers.
I heard about this on the News Hour on PBS about an hour ago. And they didn't mention one thing about the Rich Corinthian Leather spots. Damned liberal media conspiracies!
