Over the Back Fence: Is This The New Toyota AE86?

The sphere of blogo has been abuzz about a new rear-drive Toyota model that would revive the AE86 ethos. That is, the Corolla coupe from the 1980s that's still a many splendored model to import and drift kids and aficionados of Japanese classics. Now, World Car Fans spotted a spec rendering in Japanese magazine Best Car, where the story of a new Scion, possibly riding on a Fuji Heavy Industries (Subaru) platform and costing in range of $12,500. GM's Wagoner: Rear-Drive Cars Still on Track

GM's man of chair and executive of the chiefly office, Rick Wagoner, has a new title: head assuager of our darkest fears. Wagoner announced yesterday the company will indeed resume plans for a new line of rear-wheel-drive cars that include the Chevrolet Camaro and Pontiac G8. Last month, vice chair Bob Lutz had said the project had been put on hold (sorry, that they'd hit the "pause button.") while the company sussed out the potential for restrictive government standards on fleet mileage. Wagoner also used his pedestal to chide the feds for the lack of a comprehensive energy policy, which would, assumedly, prevent the corporate heart attacks that occur as volatile gas prices screw with their plans.
