<![CDATA[Silverstone Signs 17-Year Deal For British Grand Prix]]> After lingering in limbo for months, Silverstone, the site of the first ever Formula One Grand Prix is back on the calendar in a 17-year deal as the location of the British Grand Prix.

This year’s British Grand Prix was supposed to be Silverstone’s swan song and the theatrics of the yearlong telenovela that was the 2009 Formula One season were certainly in synch with the drama: it was the weekend when Formula One appeared to suddenly die.

It was also the weekend that marked the end of Jenson Button’s domination, as his young rival Sebastian Vettel powered away to a win.

Donington Park was set to host the British Grand Prix from 2010 on, but its promoters have failed to secure the funds to do so and were stripped of the rights to host the race.

Silverstone, a former airstrip which first held a Grand Prix in 1948 and was the site of the first Formula One race in 1950, is now back for at least five years, as Damon Hill—president of the British Racing Drivers’ Club, Silverstone’s owner—and Bernie Ecclestone have come to an agreement.

Meanwhile, secure in his burrow, Silverstone Bunny is celebrating this wonderful turn of events with a mighty bottle of carrot champagne.

In case you were wondering about the man on fire, it’s Brabham BMW’s Andrea de Cesaris in the process of rupturing his fuel line during the 1987 F1 race at Silverstone.

<![CDATA[Danica Patrick Signs Multi-Year Deal To Stick With IRL]]> Danica Patrick's getting an assumed three-year deal with Andretti Racing to stay in IRL. Thank God. Now we don't have to hear annoying rumors about her considering a move to NASCAR or F1 during every off-season contract negotiation.

ANDRETTI AUTOSPORT SIGNS GO DADDY AND DANICA PATRICK TO MULTI-YEAR AGREEMENTS

Andretti Autosport announced today it has signed domain registrar Go Daddy, the world's largest domain name registrar and Web hosting provider, to a multi-year primary sponsorship agreement and has also secured driver Danica Patrick for multiple years as the driver of the team's #7 entry.

The announcement came Monday morning as the #7 Go Daddy machine was unveiled by Patrick and team owner Michael Andretti live on ABC's "Good Morning America" in New York.

Patrick joined Andretti Autosport prior to the start of the 2007 season, and during her time with the team, became the first woman ever to win an IZOD IndyCar Series event at the 2008 Japan Indy 300 and also finished third in the 2009 Indianapolis 500 — bettering the fourth-place mark she established during her breakout 2005 season. Patrick also drove to a career-best fifth-place finish in this year's IZOD IndyCar Series championship, which stands as her best result ever.

MICHAEL ANDRETTI, CHAIRMAN, PRESIDENT AND CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER, ANDRETTI AUTOSPORT:
"All of us at Andretti Autosport are looking forward to having Danica back with the team and are excited about working with Bob Parsons and everyone at Go Daddy as the primary sponsor on Danica's car. <![CDATA[Septuagenarian Wins 21st Baja 1000 Title In Hummer H3]]> Rod Hall, 72, and his son Chad Hall won their respective classes racing Hummer H3 Alphas in the 2009 SCORE International Baja 1000, marking the 20th and 21st victories for Team Hall in the event's 42nd year.

Rod Hall Racing and HUMMER H3 Capture Stock Class Victories at 2009 Baja 1000
· H3 Alpha first stock class vehicle to finish in third consecutive Baja 1000
· H3 Alpha captures stock full class win; H3 captures stock mini class win
· Rod Hall, 72, earns record-setting 21st Baja 1000 class win

DETROIT – Rod Hall Racing once again demonstrated the inherent off-road capability of the HUMMER H3 as the team secured both the stock full and stock mini class wins at the 2009 SCORE International Baja 1000. The #860 H3 Alpha, piloted by Chad Hall, captured the stock full class victory, while team owner Rod Hall partnered with Emily Miller and Mike Winkel to earn the stock mini class win with the #761 H3.

With the combined wins, Rod Hall holds the record of 21 Baja 1000 class wins and remains the only racer to have competed in all 42 Baja 1000 competitions.

The 2009 SCORE International Baja 1000 marked the 42nd anniversary of the grueling off-road race and covered 672.85 miles, starting and finishing in Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico. It ran from November 20-21, 2009.

"Off-road motorsports is an integral part of HUMMER's vehicle development process and a cornerstone of the brand's DNA," said James Taylor, HUMMER CEO. "We're extremely proud of the team's resilience to earn these stock class victories and congratulate the Rod Hall Racing program on another successful Baja 1000. Race after race, they continue to prove the rugged nature of HUMMER vehicles."

In the stock full class, Chad ran a trouble free race in the #860 H3 Alpha, finishing in 22:48:40 hours and averaging 29.50 mph. While the team won the class by more than four hours, they battled the nearest competitor's Dodge Ram 2500 for the entire race until the Ram suffered a broken front axle less than 30 miles from the finish. The victory marked the third consecutive Baja 1000 in which the H3 Alpha was the first stock class vehicle to finish the race and was Chad Hall's eighth Baja 1000 class win.

"These production trucks are the right size. They're fun, take a lot of abuse and just keep running and running," said Rod Hall. "You'd be surprised at how much abuse the H3 can take."

In stock mini, the team suffered an early 100-mile deficit as a result of a broken steering rack seal caused by a significant impact to the front end of the #761 H3 near race mile 40. Despite the odds, the team battled back to pass the class leader less than 30 miles from the finish line and post a winning time of 28:53:30 hours.

One of the three Halls has been the driver of record behind the wheel of a HUMMER on a class-winning team in the SCORE Baja 1000 for the ninth straight year and 13th time in the 16 year-history of the stock class. With 33 class wins, the Halls continue to be the winningest family in the history of the race.

<![CDATA[Jimmie Johnson Wins Fourth Consecutive NASCAR Championship]]> Jimmie Johnson is the only driver to win four consecutive NASCAR championships after placing 5th at the Ford 400 this weekend. But does this really make him the greatest NASCAR driver ever?

According to The Wall Street Journal, a study shows Darrell Walltrip, Dale Earnhardt and Cale Yarborough all had superior four-year runs in terms of finishes. For example, Yarborough finished in the top-five of 73.6% of his races between 1976 and 1979 compared to just 44.4% of races for Johnson.

We're sure Jimmie would just say "Scoreboard" and go make-out with his four trophies.

<![CDATA[BREAKING: Jenson Button Signs With McLaren]]> Making the dissolution of Brawn GP complete, Formula One world champion Jenson Button has stepped into the fun of being Lewis Hamilton’s teammate at McLaren for 2010.

It’s probably been Formula One’s worst kept secret these past few weeks, but it’s official now: after Rubens Barrichello’s leave for Williams and Brawn GP’s sale to Mercedes-Benz, Jenson Button has left the team to join McLaren for the 2010 Formula One season.

The legend of Brawn GP, with its single season in Formula One which has resulted in both the drivers’ and the constructors’ title, is thus complete.

As for Button’s new job, consider that Lewis Hamilton has consumed two teammates over the course of but three seasons: Heikki Kovalainen over 2008–2009 and double world champion Fernando Alonso in 2007. Both left McLaren in a very unhappy state of mind.

Hamilton is McLaren’s home-grown talent, nurtured since age 13, and while he is undoubtedly scary fast in a well-sorted car, he is also a vain man known for public temper tantrums whenever things go even slightly wrong. Like in the first half of the 2009 season, when McLaren had the misfortune to produce a dog of a racing car.

So while the BBC is calling the Button–Hamilton lineup a “dream team at McLaren,” with both of them British and both of them world champions, expect rifts. McLaren already has a “one driver” and his name is Lewis Hamilton.

<![CDATA[BREAKING: Kimi Räikkönen Leaves Formula One]]> After failing to find a car for 2010, Ferrari’s world champion has announced that he is to leave F1 for rallying.

The laconic Finn’s premature exit was the talk of the sport for most of the year, especially after Ferrari’s 2009 car turned out to be quite a dud. Nowhere was Räikkönen’s indifference more stark than at the Malaysian Grand Prix, where during a break forced by torrential rain, he wandered about the pits with a bar of ice cream instead of remaining by his racing car:

Räikkönen was forced to leave Ferrari at the end of the season to make way for Fernando Alonso. There were talks with Toyota, hampered by Räikkönen’s high price and ultimately by Toyota’s exit from Formula One, then there were talks with his former team McLaren, which fell through. One has to wonder whether Räikkönen’s exorbitant salary demands—rumored to be close to $50 million, very much not in synch with his performance over the last two seasons—were a deliberate move on his part to ease his exit from the sport.

Going where many Finn have gone before, Räikkönen is set to continue his career in rallying. He has, in fact, already debuted in the World Rally Championship: Räikkönen drove a Super 2000 class Fiat Grande Punto Abarth for Tommi Mäkinen Racing at this year’s Rally Finland in August.

He leaves the sport after nine seasons, with occasional displays of devastating speed and a lucky world championship in 2007, when he exploited the rivalry between McLaren’s Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton and the hubris of the latter to beat both at the 2007 Brazilian Grand Prix, claiming the title which had eluded him at McLaren.

<![CDATA[When Race Drivers Become Pop Songs]]> Would you care to sing along to the lyricized exploits of the greatest racing driver who has ever lived? The 1976 Italian pop song Nuvolari might just be the answer to your needs.

Cover of Lucio Dalla's single ‘Nuvolari

When not racing his Alfa Romeo P3, giving the Germans a bloody nose at the Nürburgring or taking photographs, Tazio Nuvolari—or rather, his spirit turned muse—was an inspiration for pop. The greatest hit on Italian singer-songwriter Lucio Dalla’s 1976 album Automobili is named after the great man in the yellow sweater.

While Italian is unfortunately a language I do not speak, the undoubtedly wonderful lyrics are given a further twist toward great fun with the use of Google Translate. Witness:

Nuvolari is small in stature, Nuvolari is below normal

Nuvolari has fifty pounds of bone Nuvolari has a great body

Nuvolari’s hands are like claws,

Nuvolari was a talisman against the evils

His look is of a hawk for the children,

his muscles have muscles exceptional!

The birds lose their wings in the air as it passes Nuvolari!

When running Nuvolari frightening …

because the engine is ferocious roar while cutting the plain

“The birds lose their wings in the air as it passes Nuvolari!” Brilliant, brilliant stuff. And now it’s time to sing along!

<![CDATA[Aston Martin LMP1 Wins In Asian Le Mans]]> The Aston Martin LMP1 team was rewarded with a victory yesterday, taking first place in the second round of the Asian Le Mans Series held in Japan. The team won the three hour race after starting in fourth position.

The number 007 Aston Martin LMP1 (cheeky number guys) reportedly ran without issue and carried drivers Harold Primat and Stefan Mücke to a comfortable victory. The team started out in fourth position and managed to move into first by the 15th lap and built a healthy lead, trading positions during the first pit but eventually working up a huge lead they carried to the finish. In addition to the LMP1 win, Aston also took the checkered flag in the GT1 class. Not a bad showing for the the weekend.

ASTON MARTIN RACING WINS IN JAPAN

Okayama, November 1 2009. Aston Martin Racing claimed a sensational victory in the second round of the Asian Le Mans Series in Okayama, Japan.

The 007 Aston Martin LMP1 ran faultlessly throughout the three-hour race. Excellent performances from drivers Stefan Mücke (DE) and Harold Primat (CH) coupled with perfect pit work from the Aston Martin Racing crew saw the race go exactly to plan for the British team.

In a repeat performance of race one, Mücke started in fourth place in dry sunny conditions, taking third just across the line. He set about hunting down the front runners with an impressive display of skill and speed, taking second and then first to lead the race by lap 15. The German driver built up an impressive 20 second lead before pitting to hand the Aston Martin LMP1 over to Primat on lap 39, just before the one hour mark.

Primat joined the race in fifth place but as the Aston Martin was one of the first of the LMP1 cars to stop for fuel and tyres he regained the lead soon after when the rest of the field carried out their pit stops. With the temperature dropping Primat built the lead to almost 40 seconds before pitting on lap 83 to return the car to Mücke with just over an hour of the race remaining.

Mücke retained the lead for the last tense hour, stopping briefly for a splash of fuel eight minutes before the end of the race. Thankfully the earlier threat of rain didn't materialise until shortly after the race had finished and Mücke took the chequered flag for Aston Martin Racing.

Team Principal, George Howard-Chappell said: "I was surprised to see the car had improved so much from yesterday. Full credit to race engineer Dave Wilcock and the rest of the team for flawless work this weekend and I'd like to thank our sponsors and tyre partner Michelin. It has been a pleasure coming to Japan; the whole team has been made to feel very welcome. It's a great way to finish the season."

DRIVER QUOTES 007

Stefan Mücke (D): "The car was brilliant to drive and the Michelin tyres were perfect. The team made some minor changes to the set-up last night and it was as if someone flicked a switch and everything just came together. During my first stint the car got better and better each lap and the tyres gave me the confidence to overtake and get out in the lead. Harold did a great job in the middle of the race and then I took over for the final stage. The car was a pleasure today and I am very happy with the win."

Harold Primat (CH): "I'm so happy! This is my first win in sports cars and I am very pleased that it was with Aston Martin Racing. Stefan gave me the car in P1 and I had a consistent stint with no problems at all. I don't think anyone was expecting us to be the fastest car on the track today, we surprised everyone including ourselves. The track conditions definitely helped and the car and the team worked really well today."

In the GT1 class, Hitotsuyama Team Nova started from the back of the grid in their Aston Martin DBR9 and went on to win the class, finishing an impressive eighth overall.

<![CDATA[ESPN Analyst Suspended For Calling Juan Pablo Montoya A "Taco Eater"]]> ESPN color analyst Bob Griese was suspended for saying Colombian Juan Pablo Montoya was not in the NASCAR Sprint Cup top five because he "was out having a Taco." This raises the question: do they eat tacos in Colombia?

To find out, we called our favorite Colombian restaurant in Houston, Mi Pueblito. Angie, who picked up the phone, denied that Colombians eat tacos:

"We don't eat tacos. We eat empanadas and arepas, which are similar to a Mexican gordita, but we don't eat any tacos. And our food is not spicy."

There you have it. Bob Griese deserved to be suspended for not understanding Colombian food. Though, in his defense, we think he was referencing a completely different taco. [Deadspin]

<![CDATA[Jean Todt Wins FIA Presidency]]> Jean Todt defeated Ari Vatanen last week to become the new president of the FIA, motorsport’s international governing body, replacing 16-year incumbent Max “Spank Me” Mosley.

Todt’s candidacy was supported by Mosley himself, so no big surprise here. He took 135 votes against Vatanen’s 49, with 12 abstentions.

After a successful rallying career, Todt made his name as a manager first with Peugeot, taking them to back-to-back Le Mans titles in 1992 and 1993, then with Ferrari, where he was the head of the Ross Brawn–Michael Schumacher–Rory Byrne machine which dominated the sport for close to a decade.

<![CDATA[Aston Martin LMP1 Set For Halloween Asian Le Mans Debut]]> The young Aston Martin Le Mans racing team will be making its Japanese debut on Halloween with its hot Gulf Oil liveried LMP1. Given the October 31st running of the event, we were hoping for something a bit spookier.

ASTON MARTIN RACING SET FOR ASIAN LE MANS DEBUT

Gaydon, October 20 2009. Aston Martin Racing will make its Japanese debut with the stunning Gulf liveried LMP1 car at the inaugural round of the Asian Le Mans Series in Okayama.

The team will field one LMP1 car numbered 007 in the races on October 31 and November 1 2009. Harald Primat (CH) moves from his usual seat in the 009 Aston Martin to join 007 regular Stefan Mücke (DE) and complete the driver line-up.

Following its incredible clean sweep of the Team, Driver and Manufacturer Le Mans Series titles, the British team is looking forward to the challenge of competing at the 2.3 mile (3.7 km) Okayama International Circuit. The 13-turn course was built in 1992 and the Asian Le Mans Series will share the race weekend with the FIA World Touring Car Championship.

"2009 has been a fantastic year," said Aston Martin Racing Team Principal, George Howard-Chappell. "We have enjoyed great success all over Europe and now we head to Japan to compete in the first ever Asian Le Mans Series race."

Aston Martin Racing will face strong and experienced opposition at Okayama, including a number of the team's European Le Mans Series rivals. In addition to the Aston Martin Racing LMP1 entry there will be two further Aston Martins competing - a GT1 DBR9 from Hitotsuyama Team Nova and a Vantage GT2 from Team Hong Kong Racing.

Driver Stefan Mücke (DE) is thrilled to be racing in Japan: "I'm very excited, this will be my first visit to Japan. It is definitely going to be an interesting experience but one I'm looking forward to. It's difficult to say if the circuit will suit the car as we haven't tested there before so we will have to wait and see.

"I'm partnering with Harald (Primat) for the first time in Japan but as he is tall like me I think we will be able to find a comfortable driving position.

"It will be great to be back behind the wheel of the Aston Martin LMP1 car. The shorter three-hour format will mean qualifying is more important as the races will be more like sprints.

"We are stopping in Tokyo before the race to attend a function for our sponsors and Aston Martin customers and I can't wait to spend time in this exciting city."

Team-mate Harold Primat (CH) is also looking forward to racing in Japan: "I studied Japanese at Business School for two years prior to embarking on my racing career but I never actually made it to Japan so it will be good to finally visit.

"It is great to be driving with Stefan, he has done an amazing job all season and although I have really enjoyed driving with Darren (Turner) it will be interesting to share a different experience with another great driver.

"For me it doesn't make too much difference if it is a three hour race or our usual six hour race – it will be a little bit more intense but we always race hard so it will be business as usual. I'm really enthusiastic about the race and the event in Tokyo, I'm feeling very motivated."

The blue and orange liveried Aston Martin Racing challenger will take to the track for the first time on Friday October 30 for two one-hour practice sessions prior to the 20 minute qualifying session in the afternoon. The first of two three-hour races will get underway on Saturday 31 October with a rolling start at 12:30. The second race will commence on Sunday 1 November at 09:00.

<![CDATA[Ford Introduces 1.6L Duratec Race Engine, Restarts Kent Production]]> Ford Racing has announced plans to produce a new race version of the 1.6L Duratec for use in Formula Ford series as well as their plan to reproduce the legendary Kent engine; a 50-year-old design much-loved in racing circles.

The 108 HP 1.6 liter Duratec four cylinder will slot in lower than the current 152 HP mill as an option for Formula ford drivers, aimed at durability as well as affordable price. The Kent engine is designed to the thousands of vintage cars running the engines begin to feel the pinch of diminishing parts availability. The new/old engine will be made using lessons learned by Ford Racing's experience reproducing vintage Mustang engines. Modern techniques will be applied to make it more reliable and probably more powerful.

LEGENDARY 'KENT' FORMULA FORD ENGINE TO BE REBORN IN THE USA PLUS NEW 110PS DURATEC 1600cc ENGINE NOW AVAILABLE FOR FORMULA FORD OWNERS

UK, October 16, 2009 – Ford is to throw a lifeline to thousands of historic Formula Ford racers worldwide thanks to a decision to put the legendary 'Kent' engine block back into production. Engineering work has already begun at Ford Racing's Performance Parts division in the USA, with sales scheduled to start in 2010.

The 'Kent' engine began its production life 50 years ago, and was the perfect choice of power unit when Formula Ford was created in Britain in 1967. Though the engine was superseded at the top level of Formula Ford racing in the UK in 1993, between 5000 and 7000 'Kent'-engined cars are competing around the globe and engine parts are becoming increasingly scarce.

Now expertise gained by Ford Racing Performance Parts through its remanufacturing of classic Ford road car engine blocks, like that for the original Mustang, is to be put to good use on the 'Kent'.

"Our parts division has many years of expertise in re-making blocks," says Ford Racing Engineering Supervisor Andy Slankard, "and we are going to take our knowledge of modern techniques to remanufacture the 'Kent' block and improve its durability. Our aim is not to make performance gains but to strengthen it and to make the unit more reliable.

"There are many thousands of 'Kent'-engined Formula Ford cars still racing around the world – particularly in the USA, which never adopted the Ford Zetec engine which replaced it in Europe – and we believe that the majority of owners of these historic machines will want to retain the originality of their car by using a genuine Ford engine."

The news is welcomed by Mike Norton, Motorsport Manager Ford of Europe: "It is fantastic news that the legendary 'Kent' engine is to be reborn. This engine powered some of motorsport's greatest names to their first championship successes – drivers like Ayrton Senna, Michael Schumacher, Nigel Mansell and Mika Hakkinen – and we very much hope that the plan to remanufacture the unit will lead to even more names being added to the list of Formula Ford greats in future seasons."

New Duratec 1600cc, 110 PS engine

Another alternative for Formula Ford owners is the launch of an all-new version of the Ford Duratec 1600cc engine, offering 110 PS. This engine is designed to complement the highly successful 155 PS Duratec unit, the engine which since its introduction in 2006 has powered Formula Ford back into the single-seater limelight.

The new Duratec 1600cc 110 PS engine, which has been in development for the last 12 months, will be available from the end of 2009 with a price tag expected to be around £5,000. The new engine can be fitted into new Formula Ford chassis, or in older cars as a replacement for the 1600cc Kent or Zetec 1800cc engines.

"The new power unit will be ideal for fitment in new chassis; it will be a stepping stone to the more powerful Duratec engines used in the MSA Formula Ford Championship of Great Britain and other series worldwide," says Norton, "and the engine will be made available throughout world, from the US to Europe, Australia to Africa."

The highly robust and efficient 1.6 litre Duratec engine, as used in the Ford Focus and Ford Fiesta road cars, has proven a very successful race engine in Formula Ford championships around the world.
