One of the more interesting but overlooked facts from the 2008 24 Hours of Le Mans was that the Audi R10 TDI cars not only ran, but won, on a mixture of Shell V-Power Gas-To-Liquid (GTL) racing diesel and a newly designed Biomass-to-Diesel (BTL) fuel. We've been fascinated with prospects of biomass diesel since taking a trip to the Sears Tower in the algae van, as BTL offers cleaner output, has no fossil-fuel base and doesn't interfere with the food chain. The version used in the race cars was also 90% cleaner than American low-sulfur diesel. We talked with Audi of America's Christian Bokich about his experience at Le Mans with the winning diesel team.

This time we said yes to a first drive of the Audi R8 V12 TDI Le Mans concept car, which looks ravishing in the same brilliant red paint scheme it wore to Geneva. But who really cares about paint? We were looking forward to stretching this one-of-a-kind vehicle to the limits. And by stretching it out we mean doing our best not to destroying this invaluable prototype by propelling it into a pot hole.

Audi V12 TDI Le Mans Live at the Geneva Motor Show

The Audi V12 TDI Le Mans looks a bit different under the Geneva spotlights than in the press shots, but the nonetheless bad child of the Audi stand still looks ravishing in crimson. The 12-cylinder TDI, producing 500 hp and and 737.56 lb-ft of torque is also a sexy beast of tubage and whirly parts. Its 0-to-62 time of just 4.2 seconds is a fine number. Though we're wondering how the boffins can keep the tires from powdering with peak torque at 1,750 RPM. Questions, questions.

Detroit Auto Show: Audi R8 V12 TDI Live

Here are the first shots of the Audi R8 with all of that oilburning V12 TDi goodness you've been waiting for. Confirming the well supported rumors that we heard, the Audi R8 V12 TDI is all the power with slightly less of the petroleum depletion. As we thought, the V12 displaces six liters and produces 500 horsepower and 738 lb-ft of torque while still achieving a mileage of nearly 23 MPG (US/Highway). Detroit Auto Show: Audi R8 To Feature V12 TDI Engine, We Sort Of Called It

When all of those R8 mules started bursting into flames the blogosphere bit down pretty hard on a description from Quattro GmbH that they were packing V10 twin-turbo'd engines. We quickly posted a response from J.F. Musial claiming that we should expect anything but that V10 for the next R8. Thanks to an embargo break from Auto Motor und Sport, we now know that the R8 coming to Detroit will be featuring a V12 TDI turbodiesel. Booyah! It's good to be skeptical. More »

Out of the Mouths of Executives: Audi R8 TDI?

Wolfgang Hatz, head of engine development at Audi AG recently told Italian auto mag Quattroruote he'd like to mount the company's V12 TDI diesel in a supercar like the new R8. That desire, however, will likely rest on engineers' ability to build a high-performance version that's quieter and more roadworthy than the LeMans-winning version of the TDI, with driving responses closer to its V8 gas engine counterpart. It's far from an admission such a car is in development — as had been rumored early on in the R8's gossip cycle — but it does indicate the company is at least considering amortizing its investment by putting the oil-burner more vehicles than just the Q7. LeMans Limo: A V12 TDI for the Audi A8?

Our buddy Luca and his gang of Italian viscounts at Autoblog.it say Audi may be preparing to drop its LeMans-winning V12 TDI motor into the A8 flagship. That would bring between 500 and 650 horses (depending on turbos and tuning) and just over a gajillion lbs.-foot of torque to the limo. We're still convinced the company will also drop the 5.5-liter mill into its R8 sports car, but that likely won't happen until at least a year after launch. More »

Audi Launches R10 LeMans Racer: Yes, It's a Diesel

Audi Sport launched its newest LMP2 racer, and replacement for its successful R8 car, the R10 at a press conference in Paris this morning. As had been predicted, the R10 is powered by a diesel-fired TDI mill. AS boss Dr Wolfgang Ullrich indicated the R10 will get at least one or two laps more from a tank of fuel at LeMans on a dry road surface, compared to the R8, and will have a diesel particulate trap, making it as emissions friendly as a road-going TDI. Development partners include Bosch, Michelin and Shell. Kudos to the multilingual translator, who juggled three languages like the Flying Karamazov Brothers.
