    2009 Audi R8 V10 Production-Ready On The 'Ring

Another day, another Audi R8 tearing up the Nürburgring, right? Well, look closer, because this is actually a new version of Ingolstadt's supercar. The 'ring-obsessed guys over at Bridge To Gantry say this is the much-anticipated V10-powered model, and though we can't see what's in the engine bay or hear the exhaust note on video, there are some subtle exterior differences between this car and an "average" R8. Actually, this might even be same car we saw not too long ago. Either way, we're expecting the mill to be a 5.2-liter V10 similar to that found in the R8's corporate sister, the Lamborghini Gallardo. So, what are the hard-to-spot exterior tweaks? More »

    Auto Union Type C

The LeMans-dominating Audi R10 is an incomparable engineering spectacle. Honed from the finest materials and tested by banks of supercomputers before the first part was even crafted, the LeMans Prototype car is only now being challenged three years after its birth by an improved Porsche RS Spyder. The irony here is though these two teams battle for the same prize, they share the same grandfather, Ferdinand Porsche. Today we examine the R10's oldest and most revolutionary ancestor: the Auto Union Type C. More »

Should Race Cars Look Like Real Cars?

Automobile L'Ouest, the sanctioning body for the 24 Hours of Le Mans, has announced that by 2010 all cars in the top prototype LMP1 class must feature both a closed cockpit and bodywork resembling actual production cars. The thinking is that the LMP1 cars are "dream cars" and that fans should not be able to tell Peugeots apart from Pescarolos. On the one hand we are totally for this move, as win on Sunday, sell on Monday is one of our favorite mantras. Also, despite knowing all about the bleeding-edge tech that goes into the top cars, we find the GT1 class so much more interesting. But on the other hand, have you looked at the top Le Mans racers lately? They're gorgeous. From Bentley's beautiful yet butt-whooping Speed-8 to Audi's devil in the diesel back to back Le Mans champ R10, these cars look fantastic. And as Automobile's Robert Cumberford argued a few months back, passenger car designers should be looking to the future (Le Mans prototypes) instead of slavishly clinging to the past (ala J Mays style retroism). What sayeth you? More »

24 Heures du Frites: Audi to Run R10 on Biofuel at Next LeMans

Audi's motorsports techies, titans of the oil-burning racecar scene, say they want to run the R10 racer on biofuel at next year's 24 Hours of Le Mans. It's part of a companywide move, says Audi Sport's head of engine technology Ulrich "Torquenstein" Baretzky, to develop biofuel combustion technology for VW/Audi. But they won't be using leftover horse lard from the local bistros; they're planning to use Biomass to Liquid (BTL) fuel, or a synthetic derivative of plant-based oil, the producers of which are owned by team sponsor Shell. Oh, now we gets it. More »

LeMans Limo: A V12 TDI for the Audi A8?

Our buddy Luca and his gang of Italian viscounts at Autoblog.it say Audi may be preparing to drop its LeMans-winning V12 TDI motor into the A8 flagship. That would bring between 500 and 650 horses (depending on turbos and tuning) and just over a gajillion lbs.-foot of torque to the limo. We're still convinced the company will also drop the 5.5-liter mill into its R8 sports car, but that likely won't happen until at least a year after launch. More »

    ACO to Handicap Audi R10?

The Automobile Club de l'Ouest is examining data from the 2006 24 Heures du Mans to see if Audi's diesel LMP car had an unfair advantage over other vehicles in the race. On average 3.2 seconds faster than other machines, the R10 will most likely be fitted with a smaller fuel tank to negate the mileage advantage over other vehicles. They haven't decided on other possible handicaps yet, but we're betting on intake restrictors as well. Audi, no doubt, is already figuring out workarounds. More »

Two R10s Enter, One R10 Wins; Corvette, Lola, Panoz Round Out Sebring Class Victories

Two of the most hotly-anticipated prototype racers of the last um, uh, real long time made their full-series ALMS debuts at Sebring with mixed results. The pole-qualifying #2 Audi R10 of Tom Kristensen, Allan McNish and Rinaldo Capello took the race, while the #1 car, driven by Marco Werner, Frank Biela and Emanuele Pirro dropped out due to overheating. Meanwhile in LMP2, the hyper-fast Porsche RS Spyder that looked so promising in qualifying lost out to Clint Field, his father Jon Field and Liz Halliday in a Lola. More »

    Audi R10 Propaganda Broadside

r10_ful.jpgOkay, so yeah, yeah, this is basically Audi blowing smoke up the asses of themselves and their suppliers in the R10 project, but it's also pretty interesting if you're interested in prototype racing. One of the interesting things is that the R10 features particulate filters and uses GTL diesel fuel, which makes it a pretty damn clean diesel. We know that it turns out 650hp and 1,110 newton-meters of torque, but we'd love to know just how many lb. ft. the thing makes, since newton-meters and foot-pounds don't exactly translate directly a newton's a measurement of energy and a pound's a measurement of weight. [UPDATE: Surprise, surprise, Audi just took the pole at Sebring. Thanks, John.] More »

    Audi R10 Construction Video

We were disappointed this morning when we found out that the gut-spinning hillclimb video we posted wasn't actually of the Audio R8. Reader Alex felt our pain and went digging through the Google Videos for something to alleviate said ache and came up with this pretty badass promo vid for the R10. It's got Krauts. It's got wrenching sounds. It's got electronic music, and, in true Sprockets fashion, it's got a freakin' horse on a treadmill! What more do you want? More importantly, what more do you need? Bonus? That's probably the most badass-sounding diesel we've ever heard. More »

    Inside the R10's Diesel V-12

Maximum power from a race motor at 5k? If it's a diesel, why not? And since Audi's latest attempt to conquer the endurance-racing world is just such a mill, the twelve-cylinder 5.5L torque-monster in the brand-spankin'-new, never-been-raced R10 that's due to debut at Sebring. Ward's has an inside look at the engine. Head on over and check it. More »
