@skaycog - Got Milk?: Ok, but now all the men are going to do are going to be staring at your picture. You can be quite a distraction. In the bestest way possible.
I've been quite pleased with my Sunbeam Alpine's reliability record in the two years since I purchased it, and I've even made some smug comments here at the expense of "lesser" (MG, Triumph, Alfa, etc) roadsters. I even thought the Alpine was completely free of Lucas-itis; everything just seemed to work when I dragged the car out of its decade-long slumber, from the horn to the lights in the gauges. Granted, the points had been replaced with an electronic module, but the other electrical stuff looked like it would have when the car left the factory 47 years ago... and it worked.
I recently took the Alpine for a shakedown run before a vintage car tour/rally. It was a fun drive. First, the turn signals stopped working. No problem, I can do hand signals anyway... Then the car developed a miss between 2 and 3000 RPM under heavy throttle. Spark plug leads? Distributor cap? Rotor? I get the feeling that I'm totally screwed.
@Armand: Thank you for being honest with us and confessing this. You didn't have to do so.
But in any case, you must give the Devil his due; and by occasionally bragging that you were free of Lucasitis, you were asking for trouble. Now go and sin no more.
@Novaload, Murilee Martin: It could be worse. A family friend had a decrepit Alpine in the '70s that was already way worse than mine is now. How bad was that car's Lucasitis? When one depressed the brake pedal, triggering the brake lights, the horn would beep.
Serious question: Why *are* Lucas electrics so bad? Bad design? Bad quality control? Inferior materials? All of the above?
Even in modern cars, it makes me wonder why European and Scandanavian cars always seem to eventually end up with wacky electrical problems. Tradition, perhaps?
@☠Grяrяrяrяrя, portrait of a chickenwolfmoosepig.: From what I understand it was all cost cutting. They skimped on materials, they skimped on weatherproofing and they skimped on quality control. What scares me most is that Lucas produced aircraft components. Even with the strict maintenance standards applied to aircraft, I wouldn't want to fly any plane equipped with the prince of darkness' special recipe of nightmares.
@Psiu! Puxa! drinks unleaded and craps valve seats: Thank you for that info. I always new Lucas electrics were the scourge of the British automotive world, but never knew why. I mean, how hard is it to produce a working switch? Pretty hard, apparently, if you're Lucas.
FP: Your Volvo is awesome! Anyway promoted this comment

Walking through a parking garage today, I saw a Jag X308 with The Club on the steering wheel. I don't know if that makes the owner an optimist or a pessimist, for believing that the car's electical system won't act as its own security system.
Ha! The irony in those spares ads! I don't think I can photoshop anything that beats them. (I might try, though, if only for that book. No 50 states BS, is there?)

As a result, I'll be randomly snickering all day.
#7 is tough to beat because of both the humour and the honesty. Still, I really wish I could have voted multiple times...like in Chicago.
Vote early, vote often!
