Real Life Grand Theft Auto - Portland, Maine Edition

We didn't actually know Portland, Maine had crime or even roads, we always just assumed it was an idyllic beach town where Bostonians drove for long weekends to eat big lobsters. Apparently it's actually Maine's largest city and the location of a seriously impressive crime spree straight out of Grand Theft Auto. Thomas Cassidy, 19, apparently went off the deep end and randomly began burgling and vandalizing and then starting cars on fire. He managed to get through ten cars in a little over two hours before police caught up to him by accident while canvasing for witnesses. More »

Wheels Stolen From Meals-On-Wheels Suburban, You Can Help

Though most commit crime out of need, not sport, it's hard to feel anything but angry at those who stole the wheels from a Meals-On-Wheels vehicle in Clark County, Washington. Seriously. Without the wheels all they have is, you know... hot meals getting cold. The thieves weren't even kind enough to put the truck on blocks, meaning that there is possible damage to the undercarriage (there's never an alligator around when you need one). If you're in the Portland/Clark County area you can help by volunteering to deliver the food yourself. It's an excuse to take a long drive and help people. Details below the jump. More »

Calendar Conflict: Portland Champ Car Race Scheduled Against MotoX Championship

As mentioned yesterday, Champ Car has announced the schedule for its 2008 season, including a return to Portland International Raceway on July 27, 2008. Unfortunately, that's also the same weekend as the AMA Toyota Motocross Championship at Washougal Motocross Park on the other side of town. Previous Champ Car races in Portland have seen diminishing crowds, so we're not sure of the wisdom of programming an event on that weekend. We're not sure how much crossover there is among the MX and Champ Car crowds, but we'd try and book a hotel yesterday if we were planning to go to either event. [The Columbian]

Lapping Portland International Raceway in the Olympia Charger

We'll have a full report on the testing of the Olympia Charger at Portland International Raceway up here soon. In the meantime, Christophe Schwartz, general man about France, all 'round good guy and spearhead of the Oly Charger project, kicked down this vid of Dick Pierson's lap around PIR. Let us just say this — at any point on the track, one could pick the Charger out by ear. It made the Panoz track cars sound like childrens' playtoys. Manly thunder to the nth degree, this. Watch, listen and orgasm. More »
