Well, it seems that Porsche now wants to make another SUV that's not huge. What you see here is said to be Porsche's upcoming Audi Q5-based tall wagon. Shorter, narrower, and presumably cheaper than the Cayenne, this new offering will do battle with the BMW X3, Land Rover Freelander, Acura RDX, Infiniti EX, and Mercedes GLK, and the err... Audi Q5.

The Porsche will share engine options with the Audi, like the 3.2-liter V6. Another possibility would be a diesel, which would be a first for Porsche. Now if they could just find a way to stick a TDI V12 into the back of a 911...

<![CDATA[ Porsche Reveals Cool Boxster, Also Shows Other Cars ]]> We went to the Porsche event with high hopes of amazing unveils for the never before seen Porsche Boxster RS60 Spyder, Porsche RS Spyder, Porsche Cayenne GTS and Porsche 911 GT2. Imagine our disappointment when we got there and realized we've seen them all before, unlike the Porsche press release had implied. About the most exciting part of the whole event was the Boxster ice sculpture, with Porschemisu. They did manage to redeem themselves by encouraging us to "Have a little taste of Porsche" with the little birthday cakes - it's Porsches 50th anniversary this year. We didn't taste the cakes, because we don't know what Porsche tastes like, though we assume concentrated Bruce tastes like oil, aluminum, und schteel.

<![CDATA[ Porsche Coming To New York, Bringing Three "World Premiere" Vehicles ]]> Porsche just dropped a presser on us which has us scratching our heads. Any time we read words like "Porsche" and "First" and "Shown" in a press release, we expect the things contained therein to be, you know, Porsches being shown for the first time. In this case, that's maybe only partially true. In breathless verbiage, we're told all about the amazing new Porsche Cayenne GTS, Porsche 911 GT2, Porsche Boxster RS60 Spyder and the racing Porsche RS Spyder. Problem is we've already seen the Porsche Cayenne GTS and the Porsche 911 GT2 in the flesh, the Porsche Boxster RS60 Spyder has been both on the web and boring for nigh on three and a half months. And it would be a shock if the Porsche RS Spyder which has already won more races than we care to count wasn't pretty well known. So at the end of the day, we're really confused on exactly what it is we're supposed to be excited about here. But — the press release in all of it's breathlessness is below the jump.

THREE PORSCHE FIRSTS TO BE SHOWN AT THE GREATER NEW YORK INTERNATIONAL AUTO SHOW

World's first 300+hp Boxster, world's first 400+hp naturally aspirated Cayenne, world's first 500+hp 911: all in the Porsche stand at the Javits Center

New York, March 17, 2008 - In 2003, many pundits speculated that Porsche's move into the Sport Utility field would herald the end of the brand and the sports cars with which its name is synonymous. This year's press day's display at the 2008 Greater New York International Auto Show proves once and for all that every drop of that sports car DNA flows strong through the veins of every vehicle Porsche makes, today and in the future.

In 1960, Porsche earned its special place in motorsports history when the relatively small displacement Type 718 RS 60 Spyder took Porsche's very first International endurance win at the 12 Hours of Sebring. Overnight, Porsche became "The Giant Killer" having knocked off its bigger-bore, higher horsepower competition, including several factory Ferrari, Maserati.

To pay homage to that "Giant Killer," Porsche will introduce the Limited Edition Boxster RS60. With over 300 horsepower and a number of special "Boxster RS60" features, this commemorative sports car promises to capture the legacy of its forefathers in a package you can drive everyday.

Since the first Cayenne was introduced in 2003, Porsche has worked tirelessly to improve the breed. The latest of the new generation Cayennes is the 405 hp GTS. This vehicle proves that once again, Porsche has elevated the standard by which all other SUVs will be be judged. The Porsche Cayenne GTS, which has been called "the best handling SUV in the world," will be on display with its Porsche siblings.

For those who continue to insist in the face of overwhelming facts that Porsche has lost its focus on its core business, sports cars, Porsche will be displaying the ultimate 911 - the 530 horsepower, 505 lb. ft. of torque, 200+ mph Porsche 911 GT2. The GT2 demonstrates how Porsche is continuing to refine, improve and invest in its core sports car business.

In 2007, the Porsche RS Spyder proved once again that Porsche's heritage as a giant killer is alive and well. The Penske Team went to battle against the previously all-dominating Audi LMP1s with a lighter, more nimble, more fuel efficient, smaller displacement LMP2 car. The results will stand as one of the most spectacular seasons of racing seen in North America in decades. Taking 11 of 12 class victories and a stunning eight overall victories, Porsche once again demonstrated its technological prowess and reinforced its reputation for winning.

Last weekend, the RS Spyder once again proved the name "giant killer" remains appropriate by not only winning its class at Sebring, but winning the overall victory over more powerful competition in America's most famous sports car race. The 2008 Porsche RS Spyder will be on display at the Porsche booth for the duration of the Greater New York International Auto Show.

The Limited Edition Boxster RS 60, Cayenne GTS, 911 GT2 and the RS Spyder are currently on sale in the United States with a base price of $64,900, $69,300, $191,700 and $1,500,000 respectively.

Porsche Cars North America, Inc., based in Atlanta, GA, and, Porsche Cars Canada, Ltd., based in Mississauga, Ontario, are the two importers of Porsche sports cars and Cayenne sport utility vehicles for the United States and Canada respectively. Each is a wholly owned, indirect subsidiary of Dr. Ing.h.c. F. Porsche AG. Combined, these two subsidiaries employ approximately 250 people who provide Porsche vehicles, parts, service, marketing and training for 200 U.S. and 12 Canadian dealers. They, in turn, provide Porsche owners with best-in-class service.

<![CDATA[ The Ten Most Outrageous Car MSRP's ]]> When we asked if you could beat a $38K Accord in terms of ridiculous MSRP's, we didn't think it would be so easy. For one, you actually topped a $37,580 Accord with a $39,122 Accord Coupe. Then you were able to take the base model, entry-level cars and load them up with so many extra options that these once reasonable vehicles skyrocketed into foreign exotic territory. We have to thank our readers for the great ideas, as well as BMW and Porsche in particular for asking outrageous prices for their supposedly "cheap" models. Below are the ten worst domestic offenders.

All of these are built using the "build your own" feature of the various automaker websites and reflect an estimated MSRP. We can't imagine anyone would pay this much for any of these cars as one way to get the price up is to ignore value packages. Honorable mention goes to all of our friends from Canada, who have to pay too much for any and every car.

10. 2008 Chevy Silverado 3500HD LTZ &ndash $97,011
ChevySilveardo3500LTZ.jpg
Some people like their trucks and are willing to pay top dollar for them. Many of those people will pay $54,190 for a Silverado 3500HD LTZ, which is a lot of truck for the money. It's therefore impressive that one reader was able to add more than $42,000 in options. Duramax Diesel V8? Sure. Allison 6-Speed transmission? You'd have to. Power tilting sunroof? How could you live without it? Headrest DVD players? Would it be a truck without them?

9. Lincoln Town Car &ndash $56,020
Lincoln_Town_Car_Signature.jpg
On one hand, the Lincoln Town Car is the last of the V8 Lincoln sedans for a while and, though lacking in refinements, is a classic American luxury car. On the other hand, they've been giving these things away and asking for all that money on top of it is the height of ridiculous.

8. Smart Fortwo Cabriolet &ndash $28,928
Smart_Fortwo_Spec_Sheet.jpg
While we like the idea of the Smart Fortwo Passion Cabriolet, it's a bit too much of a fashion accessory for the average Jalopnik writer. Additionally, the $18,500 base price for the supposedly loaded Passion seems a bit beyond our range and for that price we'd expect to be able to choose our interior and body panel colors... but that's a $10,000 premium. Nearly $30K for a car that seats two, doesn't go very fast and gets only moderate mileage is hard to fathom given the last 10 cars Murilee bought added up to about that.

7. Honda Accord Coupe &ndash $39,122
2008_Honda_Accord_Coupe.jpg
As mentioned, we built a 2008 Honda Accord for about $38,000 and were impressed. Our clever commenters were able to push the Honda Accord Coupe up to $39,122. While the new Accord is certainly a capable automobile, for that price you could have a decently well equipped G37 coupe.

6. Volvo C30 &ndash $46,792
VolvoC30Version20.jpg
There's nothing wrong with the Volvo C30, though we tend to prefer the cheaper and sportier European hatches like the GTI. At $46,792, it's more than twice the base price and $20K more than the well-equipped Version 2.0. Just to compare, you could have two VW GTI's for that price.

5. Mercedes C300 &ndash $57,944
mercedesc300.jpg
The Mercedes C300 may be strong on looks, but it's still the cheapest option from Mercedes at $32,425. Throw in some options and you're spending as much for a C-Class as you would for an E-Class wagon. Nothing like spending all that cash for a sedan with a V6 that produces less than 230 horsepower. The Germans know value.

4. BMW 135i &ndash $52,550
BMW-1-Series-Coupe.jpg
There's a lot to like about the BMW 135i, including the 300 hp inline-six. Though it doesn't have a back seat big enough to carry anyone larger than a four-year-old comfortably, it's a decent performance deal. Then you start adding on options and you end up about $4,000 more than a Z4 M Coupe and very close to M3 territory.

3. Non-S Mini Cooper &ndash $55,535
Mini_Cooper_Non_S_Spec.jpg
If you thought the $50,000 BMW 135i was a steep price, imagine something slower and smaller without the Bimmer badging. We tried this a few times and you have to be clever to pul it off. If you don't accept any special packages and get everything individually you can jack the price up. Make sure to add lots of roof racks and attachable storage, as well as the JCW body kits. Just make sure you don't accidentally choose a Cooper S, because that'll make the $55K you spent on a 120-horsepower hatchback almost worthwhile.

2. Porsche Boxster &ndash $118,295
Porsche_Boxster_Non_S.jpg
Just, wow. It's not only nearly three times the base price of a standard non RS Porsche Boxster, it's also the same price as a Posrche 911 GT3. The base Boxster has 245 horsepower, trots to 60 mph in 5.8 seconds and has a top speed of 160 mph. By comparison, the 911 GT3 not only looks better, it has 415 horsepower, it'll trot to 60 mph in 4.1 seconds and has a top speed of 193 mph.

1. Porsche Cayenne &ndash $163,573
Porsche_Cayenne_Non_S.jpg
It's almost a toss-up as to what you think is the most outrageous price for a Porsche. We say almost, because $164K for a V6 Porsche SUV that's basically a VW Toureg is nearly criminal. That's not only only almost four times the base price of the $43,400 of the base Cayenne, it's nearly two Cayennes more expensive than the Cayenne Turbo. That includes the reasonable, $2,990 for the air suspension, and unreasonable, like the $690 trailer hitch ball. Our favorite may be the $1,880 to make the air vents match the exterior color. At that price, the Boxster is a bargain.

Congrats to GrandmaSideways for finding this horrific price and props for all the work it took to carefully select and unselect the right options to get the price up. Email us at Matt at Jalopnik with your address so we can get the prize to you. Thanks to everyone else who submitted, as well.

<![CDATA[ Chicago Auto Show: Porsche Cayenne GTS Caught Pre-Reveal ]]> An intrepid Jalopnik photographer/impersonator gathered up his best Ferdie Piëch and snuck behind the scenes at the Porsche booth to catch the new Cayenne GTS unawares and uncloaked. The mid-level porker SUV will be revealed officially later today, slotting between the Cayenne S and Cayenne Turbo as part of Porsche's ever-widening niche-fulfillment strategy (see what I did there?). We hear our man with the camera had to take it on the run, before a cadre of thin, pasty individuals in sweater vests could snatch away the goods. Some say they had whistles. More later.

<![CDATA[ 2008 Cayenne GTS To Be Unveiled in Chicago, Porsche Prez to Host ]]> Peter Schwarzenbauer, president of Porsche Cars North America, will give Detroit a fat middle finger over Lake Michigan later this week, when he shows up in Chicago to unveil the 2008 Porsche Cayenne GTS. Schwarzenbauer will host a breakfast before the public opening of the Chicago Auto Show this Thursday, where the fastest, hi-po Cayenne will make its US debut. Having sidestepped the Detroit show due to a mere trickle of sales there, Porsche can spend more time cozying up to one of its larger US markets — the one in which Joel Goodsen accidentally rolled his dad's 928 into Belmont Harbor.

<![CDATA[ HAMANN Cyclone Porsche Cayenne: Nothing Says Speed Like Snakeskin ]]> We'd say this new Porsche Cayenne was to die for, but then it turns out there are people willing to die for a Porsche Cayenne. Well, that and it's kind of hideous. Something about this HAMANN Cyclone body kit just doesn't quite work. Maybe it's that sort of M5-esque front bumper. Maybe it's the unnecessarily large black rims. Or maybe it's ridiculous snakeskin, carbon fiber and velour interior. Though gaudy, it does finally confirm that carbon fiber is a fashion statement more than a performance statement. Press release and pictures below the jump.

The HAMANN Porsche Cayenne "Cyclone"

The Porsche Cayenne enjoys great popularity with the customers. No wonder, since the noble SUV combines power and design. HAMANN MOTORSPORT in Laupheim offers various modifications for Porsche Cayenne to refine it and to make it more individual. The most obvious alteration ist the shapely and mighty envelopment. Fitted with the HAMANN wide body-kit the Cayenne becomes the "Cyclone"!

A true HAMANN without aerodynamical conversion is inconceivable. Even more so, when the vehicle in question is a Power SUV like the Cayenne. Brandnew is the HAMANN wide body-kit, which make the Cayenne appear even more imposing. Fitted with this kit, the Cayenne may call itself „Cyclone".

The front view presents itself in an unmistakable optical characteristic. The specialists in Laupheim designed a front spoiler with two integrated LED-daytime running lights and fog lamps each. By offering the LED daytime running lights HAMANN makes a valuable safety contribution. Three high performance-LEDs and 250 reflectors lead to a better signal aspect. Their lucent white signal light is highly visible even at daytime and warns oncoming traffic fast and efficiently, which in case of emergency leads to better reaction time. Further advantage: LEDs beat normal H7-bulbs in terms of durability because they can be used 30 times longer. Additionally, they lead to less fuel consumption which is a result of their better energy-efficiency.

But even with switched off LED´s the „Cyclone" is a flashily-dressed giant. The front and rear extended wheel arches give the Cayenne an absolutely powerful. The back also demonstrates individual power: roof spoiler and rear-facing panel with integrated diffuser and cut-out for the HAMANN 4-pipe sports competition silencer. The tail lights with four individual light fixtures are real eye-catchers.

Corresponding to the performance and in order to provide suitable optical characteristics, HAMANN offers a lowering system for all vehicles with pneumatic shock absorption. The vehicle is thus lowered in front and rear by approx. 35 millimetres. Of course, the vehicle thus reacts distinctly more accurately to the steering system and offers pure driving pleasure.

The specifically developed HAMANN brake system for the front axle with slotted and ventilated brake discs sized 380 x 34 millimetres, aluminium disc chamber, sports brake linings and steelflex brake pipes. The eight-piston fixed calliper disc brakes in silver complete the system and apply a powerful grip. At the rear axle an four-piston brake system with slotted and ventilated brake discs sized 380x28mm plus the same hardware as above support the system working at the front.

Optimal contact with the road is guaranteed by the HAMANN light-alloy wheels ANNIVERSARY II for 22 inch tyres. The multi-part aluminium wheel in multi-spoke design is available in the dimensions 10.5 J x 22 inches for front and rear axle. If you prefer it a size larger, you can also have the size 11.5 J x 22 inches for the rear axle, but then only in combination with the flared wheel arches. The silver ANNIVERSARY II with high gloss polished rim flange is fitted with tyres in 295/30 ZR 22 (front) and 315/30 ZR 22 (rear).

The appearance of the three-piece, ultra light forged wheels EDITION RACE in crossing spoke design and black wheel spider is identified through its nine main spokes double-attached, branching and continually double-crossing towards the outside rim. Its stirring design becomes particularly noticeable through Titan studs. The high-polished flange is icing on the cake to complete this luxurious look. The wheel EDITION RACE comes in an impressive 11x23" with tyres 315/25 R23.

HAMANN equips the "Cyclone" with high performance tires from technology partners HANKOOK.

Sound tuning - with some additional horse power produced at the same time - is accomplished by HAMANN with its sports exhaust systems. Sports headers and sports metal catalytic converters including connecting pipes for the HAMANN 4-pipe-sports rear silencer made from stainless steel, evoke thoughts of a raging cyclone closing in!

As in all HAMANN models, there are no limits to the customer's requirements in respect of the passenger compartment. Can't be done? - that's not true! An absolute must is the pedal set including aluminium foot rest. Of course, the exclusive pearl velours floor mats with the silver, embroidered HAMANN logo are also indispensable. A three spoke airbag-equipped sports steering wheel connects the driver even better to his vehicle. Additional motorsports atmosphere provides the 36-piece carbon coated interior-set. Passengers preferably never want to get out of the „Cyclone", when HAMANN fits out the passenger compartment with its „Twotone Snake" full leather equipment. There really isn´t much room left for more precious interior! As always, HAMANN applies the rule „nothing is impossible". Every Cayenne is customized according to each customer's specific requests, for example with extensive multimedia conversions.

<![CDATA[ Russian Model Killed Protecting Her Porsche Cayenne ]]> Sad news from Russia, where a former Russian model and, ironically, head of a security firm was killed while trying to stop a man from hijacking her Porsche Cayenne. Anna Loginova, who was only 29 years old, was going to purchase a kitten in a neighborhood of Moscow when a man grabbed her and threw her from the car. Unwilling to let her car get stolen, Loginva grabbed the door to the Cayenne and was pulled for several feet before letting go of the door. The blow she took when she hit the ground was, unfortunately, fatal.

This wasn't the first time something like this had happened to the young woman. She told Maxim magazine that she had been attacked before and was able to use a Jiu-Jitsu technique to stop the assailant long enough to get her gun. The article says her Cayenne was silver, so no crazy Russian Cayenne jokes. [News From Russia]

<![CDATA[ Porsche Cayenne GTS Bound For Chicago Auto Show, Pricing Announced ]]> The newest addition to the Porsche SUV lineup, the Porsche Cayenne GTS, is going to set you back $69,300 when it goes on sale next month, putting it closer to the $57,900 Cayenne S than the $93,700 for the Cayenne Turbo. Unfortunately, the performance is also closer to the Cayenne S with a 405 horsepower version of the 4.8-liter DFI engine, as opposed to the 500 horsepower version in the Turbo. But if the Turbo is out of your price range but a recent stock split means you can do better than the basic Cayenne S, the GTS might be for you. Press release below the jump.

2008 PORSCHE CAYENNE GTS PHOTO, PRICING REVEALED

ATLANTA, January 29, 2008 - Porsche will add some spice to the 100th anniversary of the Chicago Auto Show by unveiling the Cayenne GTS to the American public. Already known for exceptional on and off-road prowess, the GTS has been formulated, tested and tweaked to offer the best on-road characteristics of any Cayenne Porsche has ever produced.

The Cayenne GTS features a 405hp 4.8 liter V-8 engine. Based on the same V8 found in the Cayenne S, this more robust powerplant can be coupled either with an automatic Tiptronic S or, for the first time in a Cayenne V8, a six-speed manual transmission for those who want to take full advantage of this new power and suspension package. The GTS gets its cornering prowess from standard 21-inch alloy rims equipped with 295/35 R21 tires and air suspension that features Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM).

The Cayenne GTS front end is reminiscent of the Cayenne Turbo while the body has a lower stance and a striking new wheel-arch design that complements the new 21-inch rims. The interior boasts redesigned front and rear seats that offer a sportier look and feel with Alcantara to hold both driver and passenger in place during spirited driving.

The 2008 Cayenne GTS goes on sale in February and pricing for this new model is US $69,300.

Porsche Cars North America, Inc. (PCNA), based in Atlanta, Ga., and its subsidiary, Porsche Cars Canada, Ltd., are the exclusive importers of Porsche sports cars and Cayenne sport utility vehicles for the United States and Canada. A wholly owned, indirect subsidiary of Dr. Ing.h.c. F. Porsche AG, PCNA employs approximately 250 people who provide Porsche vehicles, parts, service, marketing and training for its 212 U.S. and Canadian dealers. They, in turn, provide Porsche owners with best-in-class service.

<![CDATA[ Wild Russian SUV Has Identity Crisis ]]>
We've seen questionable Porsche Cayennes out of Ruskie tuning shops before, but this one takes the cake - especially since we're pretty sure it's a VW Touareg. This abomination with a split personality comes once again from English Russia and between the mildly interesting front end and the horror show that is the back, we wouldn't be heartbroken if it ended up in the shredder. But what makes us suspicious of this wayward SUV's progeny? As you can see after the jump, it's all in the windows.

Comparison.JPG We're willing to fall on either side of this divide. Is it a Cayenne with a replacement window? Maybe. Is it a batshit crazy VW Touareg trying to pass itself off as more than it is? Perhaps. We just know it's further evidence that taste is extraordinarily subjective. (h/t to Thethinggoesbing)

<![CDATA[ High Times COTY: Porsche Cayenne Turbo Cannabis ]]>

We're not huge fans of the idea of Porsche building an overweight, oversized suvvie in the first place, but this is just adding insult to injury. Thanks to the eagle eyes of Vintage Racer, we're now torn up about what to think about the Porsche Cayenne Turbo "Cannabis" Edition built by the Russian builder GT-A Tuners. Yes it's got some very nice 20" wheels, yes it has some Rinspeed go faster parts, but the cabin is also painted like the inside of a Bob Marley festival. Our money says the customer for this piece of work is a 70 year old grandma with cataracts. [via EnglishRussia]

When you start watching this commercial you might think the marketing team is trying to convince you that Porsche is the car company of creepy dudes that masturbate alone, using the throaty exhaust note to cover up the sound of their lonely passion. Then you realize they're trying to say that the Porsche Cayenne GTS is part of a greater lineage of Porsches. For those that don't remember, the Cayenne GTS is wedged between the Cayenne S and Turbo S with a 405 horsepower version of the 4.8-liter DFI engine. Pics below, groans above:

<![CDATA[ The Rinspeed "X-Treme" Is A Swiss Extravaganza ]]> The mad Swiss at Rinspeed, known for both Porsche tuning and underwater Lotus tuning have set their sights on the Porsche 957 Cayenne and the results are extreme X-treme. The Rinspeed X-treme is much wider and lower than the stock Cayenne thanks to the bulging arches and matching side skirts. The whole package is also lower thanks to an electric air suspension that lets the driver adjust the car by 35 mm. More power comes courtesy of a new sport exhaust system that brings the X-treme up to 600 hp. Press release below the jump.

Swiss Extravaganza - The Rinspeed "X-treme" based on the Porsche 957 Cayenne

The Swiss company Rinspeed, also renown as a noble Porsche tuner, can look back to thirty years of tradition and now presents its latest customizing program based on the face-lifted Porsche Cayenne. The latest creation of the Swiss is called X-treme which is specially high-lighted by the sporty and dynamic aerodynamics package. It plays the latest Cayenne outstandingly to the gallery and fits to all model versions.

The complete new frontskirt/bumper impresses by its aggressive and distinctive visual appearance. Bigger air-intakes with fins as well as a front splitter with its own brake aeration award the Rinspeed X-treme a proprietary and typical look. Beefy wheel arches let the sporty SUV appear to be much wider and more dynamic. The side skirts fit elegantly into the existing side lines and connect homogenously the wide wheel arches. The rear skirt has received a difusor which diminishes the down force significantly. The two rear chrome exhaust tips are the high-light of the back end. The sporty exhaust system clearly suggests the ample power under the hood. The X-treme will bring up to 600 hp on the road.

The contact to the road is ensures by the enormous wheel-tire-combination in the typical Rinspeed design. The biggest available version is of the size of 11x23 inches. The 315/25-23 tires are especially approved for speeds of the 300 km/h. The air suspension is customized with an electronic module which lowers the SUV by 35 mm - the whole range covers 110 mm .

Exclusive leather interiors as well as customizing options as individual bucket seating, home entertainment systems and many other items round up the diversified program. [Source: Rinspeed]
