I remember being a kid and thinking that the light-up "PONTIAC" script on the back of the Sunfire was the coolest thing ever. Of course, I was pretty easily impressed at the time.
Look, you can't even see it in that picture! That's how little anybody cares about the Sunfire!
I don't know how anyone passed up this car. Not only was Pontiac building Excitement, but they were paying us $1000 for the pleasure! A hot girl in a tight white dress only added to the Excitement.
I would have bought one, of course, but my heart was set on a factory-ordered Mustang LX 5.0, black with grey leather, 5 speed, loaded, sunroof, stereo delete.
No hot girl and no cash back but perhaps a bit better car.
We often think of the 70s or mid-80s as the heights of cheesiness. But this just goes to show that cheese actually peaked in 1990, just before grunge exploded to the mainstream.
After 1990, it seems like every Pontiac was painted that awful metallic teal green.
(My grandmother had two Grand Ams of this era - a grey one that someone hit and totalled, then a blue one. Dunno if they had the Iron Duke or the little six.)
I want to take that Bonneville seriously, but with those hubcaps, I just can't. It's like a big hairy guy with missing front teeth, wearing a bunny costume and holding a rusty meat cleaver.
I voted for the Bonneville (one of the only truly-iconic cars I've ever been lucky enough to drive) but seeing the GTO reminds me that Murilee had floated the idea of doing a hood scoop vote-off... pretty please?

It was also rough, noisy, and horrible.
But hey, it was quick.
