Firebirds were hot imports for US Navy people getting stationed in Bahrain back in the 70's if you were permitted to ship a vehicle, was a quick profit turn around to a local.
My wife and I were just talking about Smokey and the screaming chicken. It's amazing that there was a time when moustaches and Trans-Ams were not ironic in any way.
I'm suggesting that we get Playboy covergirl, and TV/movie star Sally Field to follow in the tap dancing footsteps of Shirley Temple, and be the next ambassador to Iran. In Smokey and the Bandit she was a dancer, just like Shirley. She was a flying nun, so she's good with the religious stuff. She was on the cover of Playboy, and who doesn't like scantily clad women? And in Forrest Gump she proved, she'd do almost anything to help out children. What could go wrong?
This is nothing new. In the late 70's we had an influx of young Iranians in the town I lived in. They bought up like an entire apartment complex or something like that and went to high school and college in the area. They bought nice cars like kids buy candy but their favorites by far were the Trans Ams. Strangely, most of the pretty girls hung out with them too. How does that work?
The Koran does say, "Do you not see that Allah is He Whom do glorify all those who are in the heavens and the earth, and the (very) birds with expanded wings? He knows the prayer of each one and its glorification, and Allah is Cognizant of what they do." (The Light 24.41)
Trans Am - the kind of awesome that brings different cultures together. Or these guys could hate us even more on account of Uncle Sam killing off Pontiac. Could go either way.
Iran and other countries in the region frequently complain about the lower quality of life that their respective populations often experience, and here they are with frickin' Firebirds. To the best of my knowledge, Firebirds were never sold anywhere near there, which means that they imported them gray market, a very expensive thing to do with a car.
And how the hell is it that Tehran is apparently more American than Los Angeles? Granted, there are lots of car meet-ups, but it's been a damn long time since I have seen one for Firebirds.
@pauljones: Hey, that silver one... THAT'S MY STOLEN IN THE 80'S FUCKIN' FIREBIRD!!!! ...or at least that's how I picture it being said when the original owner sees it.
@pauljones: It's actually probably not all that hard to get a GM product, considering how many oil-rich countries in the middle east buy American cars (think Saudi Arabia, or even Israel), and once its on land, it wouldn't be that hard. I wonder if Tehran has it's own version of the EPA? I highly doubt it...
I just did a little poking around, and oddly enough it looks like the taxation on importing a car (most likely new) is 100%. And you think our taxes are bad. I don't know how much of a 'classic' car market there is in Iran, how many people really want a used Paykan, a 'new' 38 year old Hillman Hunter?
@pauljones: Grey market import is never that expensive, that's why people do it in the first place.
Cars are always cheaper in US and you just need shipping company to take care of logistics (cheap again) and that's it, you got your Firebird in Tehran for meet-ups and hoonage. Maybe exporters have emptied LA by now.
@pauljones: Just because 90% of the population is starving doesn't mean the other 10% can't import Firebirds and the like. These numbers are obviously not accurate, and I don't think Iran has a lot of starvation, although they do have a decent # of poor, who are the ones that support Ahmadinejad, since he basically gives handouts to the poor. Same thing goes in countries like China - the majority of the population is living in hovels, doing subsistence farming or other menial labor jobs - that doesn't mean that it's not a huge market for Ferrari. There is certainly a lot of hypocrisy in the middle east, though...
@pauljones: well, I think couple of years ago it was approx. $1000 per car from east coast of US to Europe, then it went up with boom and with lack of containers and now it's down again because there's over cap. of vessels and containers. But I don't have exact prices.
Same with other places in the world, ships are moving goods and maybe cost is $2000 NJ- Iran, some people have this money there, so why not.

Yes?
Carry on, then.
It's nice to see that F-body love knows no borders. Curious lack of mullets, though.
Full disclosure: I love 2nd gen F-bodies, and haven't had a mullet for nigh on 2 decades.
