First, it's an '88 Formula, which means if it's the original engine is a 2.8 V6, and not the 2.5 four banger. Second, Car & Driver magazine actually built a Honda CRX, with a second CRX powertrain in the rear, ala Fiero, and made one gonzo, over the top all wheeel drive car. They di say the hard part was getting both engines to respond in sync., and paid some really talented people a bunch of money to make it happen.

@BaronFeardie: Second, Car & Driver magazine actually built a Honda CRX, with a second CRX powertrain in the rear, ala Fiero, and made one gonzo, over the top all wheeel drive car.

There was (is?) a company that would put an extra Northstar V8 in the trunk of a 90s Cadillac Eldorado, driving the rear wheels.

They also mentioned issues with syncing the engines, but I believe in the end they decided not to worry about it-- as long as one engine isn't way overpowering the other, it works itself out. If one end loses traction and starts to rev too high, the other end will likely upll/push it to better traction. #hybridpontiacfiero

Pretty cool. I've thought of doing this with a Toyota MR-2 and a forklift motor or two. I did not know there was an electric S-10 though.

    This isn't a Hybrid, it's an e-4WD system.

A Hybrid uses a combination of ICE and electric motor to drive the same wheels. e-4WD uses an ICE to drive one set of wheels and an electric motor to drive the other set, thus negating the need to run a driveshaft the length of the car.

@beercheck: Agreed. I wouldn't have minded if they used an earlier one, but the '88s had the bespoke suspension parts, rather than the recycled T- and X-body bits.

I've always been curious, with 2 engine cars driving different sets of wheels, how do you get them to apply power evenly, without fighting eachother?

How are they going to get the engine and the motor to play nice together? I remember a C&D article about a sedan with two engines, but they both powered the same wheels. But this, where they're powering their own set of wheels? That's crazy. Crazy awesome, but still crazy.

So, how does the speed of the front wheels get matched to the speed of the rears? I can see a nightmare trying to get an electric rheostat and a throttle cable perfectly sync'd.

    @CPO Alfisted: DC Electric motors aren't speed-controlled, they're load-dependent.

As long as you have a reasonable map between the go pedal and the motor controller, the motor will just provide a "booster" torque to complement the gas motor.

@layabout returns: Don't look at it as a Hybrid, 'cause it's not. This is more like Nissan's e-4WD system.

Rather than hack the sh*t out of the chassis to run a driveline to back and have to deal with a transfer case and all that crap they just stuck an electric motor in the back to drive the rear wheels. Simply flip it around and you've got this system.

We can lay it out like this:
    f + f = w
    and
    f + w = w
    therefore
    f + (f + f) = w
