The best way for GM to get rid of Pontiac is for those last G8's to be raced through production with stunt drivers anxiously waiting by to take the wheel as everyone runs out of the building, drivers flooring it out of there on ramps to jump over a moat full of crocodiles, sharks, and swimming lions as the building explodes behind them, only to land on flat pavement on the other side, destroying the suspension and somehow creating a leak in the trunk and blowing the power window motors, thereby signifying the testosterone-laden, sports-driven conception and production of the Pontiac brand, only to fall flat on the harsh reality of reliability and brand management gone haywire.
I suppose having a G6 as the last Pontiac is no worse than the Alero being the last Oldsmobile.
But if it's not too much to ask, is there any way to do something a little special with the last G6? Bring back the manual transmission (it was an incredebly rare option for a couple years)? Toss in the turbo Ecotec from the Cobalt SS? Just don't build a typical fleet queen?
@kumbayacars: Oh, no doubt there - it's just wishful thinking for Pontiac to end with a bang instead of a whimper. Given how Pontiac "invented" the muscle car, and through some illicit parts bin rummaging, it'd seem sort of appropriate.
@My A Arm: Oh I don't know if that's accurate. I think just because they put a big engine in the LeMans doesn't qualify the GTO as the first muscle car.
The Aztec should be the last Pontiac. That way folks will actually have something point at and say, "that atrocity is what did it, that's what killed Pontiac".

@FromaBuick6: I'm assuming either union agreements, or to finish off their supply of parts. Or, GM just hasn't completely weaned themselves off the fleet sales tit.
@#6: Oh, I totally got it. I had a college friend who had one of those - the 1st-gens, before the "Geo" badge showed up. We went to school in Baltimore, and during the 3 years she had it there, it was stolen at least twice. Completely stripped, both times.
@#6: There's two around here, both with horrible paint. The total shitbeater has "Genuine Chevrolet" lettering along the top of the windshield that nearly made me piss myself with laughter, while the other one looks like the owner masked off the windows, painted it flat black, then threw some small cans of yellow/orange/white paint on the driver's side (the only angle I've seen it from).
I saw a primo five-door Geo Prism in ubiquitous light blue a week or two ago, too. That was neat.
@Taco#6 putting on the ritz: You mean the one with the umlaut? Thankfully, no, that abortion (and Passport before it) were saved for Canada. As were the GMC/Pontiac Trackers, the Pontiac Firefly/Corpest, etc.
@UncleBenny: Agreed. The G6 is mediocre, really, and hardly a Pontiac. The G8? Well, let's just hope they bring over the standard/GT models as Impalas in a year or two.
@Alfisted: I was just drooling over a black one at the dealership last night. It was kinda hidden off to the side a bit, and looked so sinister, and almost elegantly beautiful. My automotive lust was quickly turned to a deep seated depression over what could have been...
Not without precedent... weren't the last of the Packards rather thinly rebadged Studebakers...? Not that Studebaker "triumphed" over stablemate Packard, it just managed to survive for a few more model years under its own name.

But man, it would be great to look at.
