It's an AUSTRALIAN MADE AND DESIGNED Holden Commodore SS Ute. We've had them here for years and years. So here we have Pontiac coming to Australia to revive their dying car lineup.
Last thing they needed was to import an ugly resurrected retro like this. I guess they finally reviewed their notes from the older cousin, Mr Chevy SSR.
@ricky_b: The SSR was a failed attempt at a "Halo" vehicle, expensive and mechanically complex for the sake of mechanical complexity. The G8 ST has the potential to move some serious units, and doesn't have needlessly complex systems like the SSR's hardtop. Chevy should also have learned from the failure of the Lincoln Blackwood that a hard tonneau that is not readily removable will render the cargo box useless.

Our sales are in the shitter, lets make a whole new model that nobody would really want! And lets make some really bad design decisions with it like we did with the Solstice/Sky/GT's convertible top that will keep even more people from buying it!
The G8 sedan is a flop itself, with the money already invested in the US body parts and crash cert for these Holden fullsize why not just sell the wagon and Ute here too?
@TriShield: From my conversations to dealers, (and admittedly this is in oil-rich Alberta) the G8 itself is not a flop. The G8 V6 is a flop. Dealers around here are backordered, and fighting tooth-and-nail for G8 GTs. A dealership near me took delivery of a G8 GT last Wednesday, and called me because they knew I was interested. By the time I got there that afternoon, it was sold. But they have 3 V6 models on the lot, and my local dealer has 2 V6's that they've had since July. In that same timespan, they've brought in 4 GTs and sold them within a few days.
@chrystlubitshi: sadly... (if i were able to afford it) i'd buy one in the US and instantly redo all the body work to holden badges/spec (same with the G8.... if i could just afford it... damn it...)
Tell me. Why wasn't this offered as a range of models, from six-cylinder/stick-shift/steelies to the full-on raging ST? Why wasn't it branded as a Chevrolet or GMC? Why wouldn't handymen and light contractors, confident with the size of their penis, choose a more fuel-efficient, easier-to-load truck?
@FuzzyPlushroom: "Why wouldn't handymen and light contractors, confident with the size of their penis, choose a more fuel-efficient, easier-to-load truck?"
Because there are less than 5,000 of these in the US. Why the hell do you think that NOBODY buys Ford Rangers?
@LucettaMusca: Nobody buys Rangers because Ford (or Ford's dealer net) refuses to sell regular-cab two-wheel drive strippers with the hose-out interior to anyone but fleets.

1) They can't conceive of the product if it's not in a brand pigeon hole. WHY does it HAVE to be a Pontiac? Get over the brand bucket thing, puhleeeez. If you like the vehicle, make it a Chevy. Why is that so freakin' hard?
2) The vehicle makes no sense. GM cannot rebuild it's company on wierd little niche vehicles. The ad budget alone for this thing would be more than they could ever hope to make in profit, not to mention the grief of all those 1-off parts having to get in the supply chain. Now, killing the good-looking, good handling, G8 sedan is stupid. too, because that is exactly the vehicle it is WORTH all the grief and expense to bring over..
Geez... do I have to fly out there and run the place myself?
@RetardedSparks: dude... why even make it a chevy? just bring the holden name over hear... spend 20 seconds at the start of all commercials showing the shared chassis vehicles over the last 40 years... and explain... "GM 'Down Under'" to the average US populace... and take a shot... if that doesn't work... well then... put chevy or pontiac badges (or make some of us happy and just make 'em Olds) see how it goes then...
people will realize that there are more than just a few companies out there... or... wait... no there really are just a few car companies out there... and the "american" based ones sell better cars every where but here... and the majority of people might want something else... still in the range of stuff offered by the 'bigger than realized' 3... but not available here... and maybe someone up there on cloud 7 will hear their little prayers...

Maybe they realized they shouldn't be betting their future on nostalgic 'mericans pushing 40 who remember the original (like me who borrowed the neighbor's El Camino to haul my drum kit around).
Everyone, repeat after me: the 1960s and 1970s was a long fucking time ago and has been over for a long time.
@silverjunkee: hey man... that sounds like a good reason for an update to me... those older ones are gettin' pretty scarce and kind of icky looking if they're to be had for cheap.......
WINNER of a concept/idea... why not give it another go..
@HSimpson: Listening to some of the discussion, I worry that they fail to recognize that people actually buy interesting cars.
Congress keeps harping on next-gen/green/alt-fuel/hybrid cars as the sustainable future for Detroit.
I have to wonder where the demand is going to come from, when a simple 4-cyl econobox still beats all the above on cost-of-ownership (purchase price + maint + fuel - resale).
I hope the net result of a bailout is the canceling of any and all domestic models I might actually want to buy. (Trucks, G8, Camaro)
