Previously, infrared cameras from companies like Mercedes have been able to identify pedestrians, but were only capable of drawing a driver's attention to them through a display screen. The Volvo Pedestrian Detection system adds an extra levels of capability to that — tracking their speed and direction and the ability to automatically apply the brakes — leading the Swedish brand to claim huge safety advances.

While over-protective parents and everything-is-someone-else's-fault Nazis will see a clear benefit in a car that removes a driver's ability to run over their spoiled, playing-in-the-street children, we're a bit more skeptical of the need for this technology. Surely the only 100% effective method of eliminating car/pedestrian interfaces is to separate roads from pedestrian areas. We'd much rather see more pedestrianized streets in city centers and barriers between sidewalks and streets than we would expensive, prone-to-failure technology. Like other safety aids-antilock brakes springs to mind as a good example-we can see drivers learning to rely on the Pedestrian Detection system over their own judgement and skill, then failing to pay attention at crucial moments. <![CDATA[Michael Schumacher Allegedly Mows Down UK Pedestrian]]> Michael Schumacher may have mad skills on the track, but the international racing sensation allegedly may have mowed down a pedestrian while attempting to overtake a pair of old ladies in a Fiat this weekend. Schumacher was apparently driving a Ducato van back from the Silverstone Classic in England when he knocked over Martin Kingham, who was locking up his garage. That's right, Schumi loves the van. Accidents happen, but apparently the seven-time world F1 champ doesn't like admitting he was wrong, at least according to Kingham.

'I thought I recognised the driver but my head was spinning. He was screaming: 'What the f***ing hell were you doing in the road.

'He seemed cross, as if I was in the wrong. I called the police.'

[...]

'He still didn't apologise. He was arrogant. The way I landed was lucky. My leg was aching, and the next day a big bruise came up below my knee.'

While we're glad to hear that everyone is okay, we're sort of wondering if Schumacher isn't getting a bit cocky given recent incidents...

<![CDATA[Fisker Adding External Speakers To Karma, Michael Stipe Alarmed]]> Henrik Fisker has announced that his new Karma plug-in hybrid sports car will come equipped with external speakers for pedestrian safety. The four seat Karma goes on sale late in 2009 and is capable of traveling up to 50 miles without using the gasoline engine. While in electric-only mode it's virtually silent, prompting fears that pedestrians could be at risk if they're unable to hear it coming. Capable of playing any sound its owner chooses, one option according to Fisker is, "like something between a Formula One car and a jet plane."

Fisker goes on to claim that his company has been receiving "between 50 and 100 orders a week" for the Karma, meaning it now has a one-year waiting list. Most of those orders have come from Europe.

The $80,000 Karma was first unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show in January. It has a top speed of 125mph and reaches 60mph in six seconds. [Via Forbes Autos]
