<![CDATA[2011 Infiniti M Revealed At Pebble Beach]]> Apparently Nissan didn't get the message all the cool stuff was happening at the Woodward Dream Cruise today and they went ahead and revealed the 2011 Infiniti M at the stinky old Pebble Beach Concours.

We'll be honest here, we're too busy eyeballing supercharged Vegas and high-rise F150s to really pay much attention to the Infiniti M right now, but the it was revealed virtually at Pebble Beach earlier today, and in pictures here. It'll get a 3.7 liter V6 or a stout 5.6 liter V8 with "more than 400 HP," there's a lot of filler verbiage in the press release about technology and elegance and materials, but all you really need to know is there will be a diesel available in Europe and not in the US. Take that America.

2011 Infiniti M Makes Virtual Debut at Concours d'Elegance

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. (Aug. 14, 2009) – Infiniti today provided an advanced look at the all-new 2011 Infiniti M performance luxury sedan at the 59th Annual Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. This is the third generation of Infiniti's popular M and the first to be sold across all of Infiniti's 32 markets around the world, including Western Europe.

Like the current Infiniti M, the next-generation design will be offered with V8 and V6 engines. The 2011 M models will be designated the Infiniti M56 and Infiniti M37 respectively, reflecting their more powerful, larger displacement engines. The M56 V8 is expected to offer more than 400 horsepower. For Western Europe, the M56 will be replaced by a V6 performance diesel.

The 2011 Infiniti M also features a completely redesigned body, with authentic sports sedan proportions and evocative new styling with a low front end and deeply sculpted fenders inspired by the Infiniti Essence concept car. The new M interior promises to be pure Infiniti, highlighted by the use of innovative materials, an advanced climate control system, superior audio and an enhanced quality feel. Despite improved performance from the new engine lineup, fuel consumption will be reduced.

In addition, the 2011 M will continue Infiniti's technology innovation leadership with a blind spot intervention system. This industry-first system is designed to help alert the driver if another vehicle is detected in an adjacent lane during an intended lane change, and then help assist the driver in returning the vehicle toward the center of the original lane of travel.

The 2011 Infiniti M, which is scheduled to go on sale across the world starting from spring 2010, was revealed through a unique "video mapping" process – in which a "virtual M" was created on a 3D form. It is the world's first "virtual only" (no physical vehicle) automotive application of this cutting-edge technology. The 2011 Infiniti M will make its official public debut later this year.

<![CDATA[2011 Infiniti M Teaser Sketch Previews Virtual Pebble Beach Unveil]]> Nissan's released this teaser of the 2011 Infiniti M, set to debut August 14th at the Pebble Beach Concours, kinda. It's actually going to be digitally revealed, projected onto a blank foam model. Weird.

Apparently Infiniti wants to project an image of advanced technology with its reveal of the latest generation of its M sedan as they'll be using some techno-geekery to show off their latest car in a virtual sense. Using an array of linked projectors beaming images of the car onto a dimensionally accurate 3D foam model, they'll be revealing the new M in a superfluous display of technology. Seems like maybe a next best option after the real deal didn't get finished in time.

In any case, it'll be the only confirmed showing of the next generation car, as we don't know specifically which show it'll be presented at formally, but the Frankfurt Motor Show is a good bet.

<![CDATA[Grand Bentley: Yet Another Dark Teaser Shot]]> After the first dark and stormy teaser shot, Bentley's revealed yet another dark kink in the new Grand Bentley's sheet metal ahead of its Pebble Beach Concours D'Elegance reveal. Full press release accompanying the night-life shot below.

BENTLEY TO CELEBRATE 90TH ANNIVERSARY WITH DEBUT OF ALL-NEW MODEL AT PEBBLE BEACH CONCOURS D'ELEGANCE

"Cars undoubtedly have a personality to the real enthusiast, to whom they are not mere collections of steel and aluminium, but animal-like, show their spirit just so soon as the clutch bites home and feeling comes through to the driver…."

(Sammy Davis, first Bentley road test report, January 1920)

Crewe: Wednesday 8 July. Bentley Motors today celebrates its 90th anniversary and confirms that its all-new Bentley will be revealed - and named - in August at the Pebble Beach Concours D' Elegance in Monterey, California where the company is a featured marque.

Founded by W.O. Bentley in 1919, the company's first production car, the 3-litre was delivered in September 1921. Over the next ten years, Bentley went on to produce an array of iconic motor cars. At the same time, the exploits of the immortal Bentley Boys – a select group of businessmen, sportsmen and bon vivants – forged the company's proud sporting pedigree both on and off the racetracks of Europe. The Bentley Boys made the legendary Le Mans endurance race their own, winning five times between 1924 and 1930.

The all-new grand Bentley captures the 1920s ‘grand touring' spirit of the Bentley Boys, delivering the effortless driving, exclusivity and adventure desired by the real motoring enthusiast. A unique fusion of elegant design, hand craftsmanship and technological innovation, the new model embodies the potent yet luxuriously refined driving experience that is ‘pure Bentley'. These have been the hallmarks of a Bentley since that first test drive in 1920.

It is fitting that the 90th anniversary of the Company will be marked by an all-new car. Such events are rare milestones in the Company's history. Designed, engineered and built in Crewe, which has been home to Bentley Motors for over 60 years, it has been a ‘once in a career experience' for many involved. The car and its name, which will be revealed at Pebble Beach on 16 August, signal a new era in British luxury motoring.

<![CDATA[Devon GTX Heading To Pebble Beach Despite Losing Viper Bid]]> The Devon GTX was supposed to be based on the Dodge Viper. Unfortunately, Scott Devon's $5.5 million bid for the Viper brand and factory was turned down. What can he use instead?

All Viper assets, including the name and production facility have been turned over to Fiat, but the Italian automaker hasn't announced any plans to continue the brand or vehicle beyond Chrysler's plan to kill it in 2011.

Right now, Devon doesn't have anything to put under the GTX's sexy bodywork. Designed by Daniel Paulin, it's heavily based on the Paulin VR concept. Expect to see a concept at Pebble Beach in August, but without the Viper platform and 8.0-liter V10 it's just a body. In order to reach production, Devon needs to find an existing platform that's already been crash-tested and certified for sale in America. Will he use a Corvette platform? What about the Panoz Esparante? What else is there? [Devon Motor Works]

<![CDATA[2009 Volkswagen CC Priced Under $27,000, First Special Model Released]]> As we marveled at the 2009 Volkswagen CC running around Monterey, the folks at VW revealed that the sleek four-door coupe will be priced below $27,000 when it goes on sale in the fourth quarter of this year. The announcement was made at the Pebble Beach Concours, making it less than 100th the cost of the Veyron 164 Grand Sport — at least before you start adding options. The company also revealed a special "Gold Coast" edition of the CC, which includes the usual exterior and interior upgrades and the 280 horsepower TSFI engine. Full details in the press release below.

SPECIAL EDITION CC GOLD COAST DEBUTS AT PEBBLE BEACH

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – To kick off the market launch of the new CC, Volkswagen of America, Inc. will debut a CC Gold Coast edition at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, August 15-17. The CC Gold Coast highlights the luxury sports coupe with powerful performance, strong lines and luxury touches combining the emotional and expressive stance of a sports coupé with the convenience of a luxury sedan.
“The CC Gold Coast builds upon the luxury sports coupe that debuted at the 2008 North American International Auto Show,” said Derek Jenkins, Chief Designer at Volkswagen’s Santa Monica, California Design Center. “We’ve added luxury and performance extras like tri-coat paint, high-end interior appointments, and ground affects that enhance the sportiness of our newest sedan.”
The unmistakable Volkswagen front-end, with two cross-struts and a centrally placed Volkswagen logo between trapezoidal headlamps is highlighted by the ground effects on the CC Gold Coast. A high-end tri-coat paint, DuPont’s Pepe Pepper, features a rich mix of gold, brown and silver tones that compliment the cars design characteristics.
The rear end of the coupé is also marked by large-surface dual taillights that produce an unmistakable visual image day and night. A spoiler with additional rear-end ground effects helps further enhance the vehicle’s sporty nature. The CC Gold Coast sits on 19 inch propeller style wheels, which provide a combination of sharp style and improved curb appeal.
Volkswagen’s attention to detail is shown off in the interior of the CC Gold Coast with four ergonomically formed sport seats wrapped in luxurious leather, a combination of Latte Macchiatto, Cornsilk with Bronze Piping on the seats with matching accents on the dash and door trim.
The CC Gold Coast edition features the 3.6L TFSI, rated at 280 horsepower and 265lbs.-ft of torque, with the innovative DSG double-clutch 6-speed automatic transmission with Tiptronic, yet another example of the car’s dual nature. The DSG system not only offers the driver the advantage of choosing between fully automatic operation or full manual selection, DSG also changes gears more quickly and smoothly than a conventional transmission, while improving fuel economy.
The CC comes to U.S. market in the fourth quarter of 2008, with a starting price under $27,000.

<![CDATA[Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Number One Auctions For $2.9 Million]]> The Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport debuted at the Pebble Beach Concours last weekend, and chassis number one was promptly auctioned off the following day by Gooding & Company for the obnoxious sum of $2.9 million. "Standard" pricing for the ultra-exclusive convertible is set at €1.4 million, or about $2 million, so a paltry $900,000 for the privilege of owning the first one is totally worth it. Thanks to the magic of the internet you can watch the entire sales process below the fold. It certainly is a whole different world.

Well, not really. But if Nick Hogan did have one, this is totally the Rolls Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe he'd drive. In fact, we bet he has a poster of this exact car on his jail cell wall right now. We'd also say the odds are high on this Phantom sticking out like a sore thumb at the Pebble Beach Concours.

<![CDATA[Spyker C8 Aileron To Debut At Pebble Beach, Dilute Show Even More]]> We've just heard the Spyker C8 Aileron will make its North American debut at this weekend's Pebble Beach Concours D'Elegance. We've already seen the Aileron make it's worldwide debut at the 2008 Geneva Motor Show, so color us jaded if we're not terribly excited by this news. In fact, we're beginning to get a bit annoyed with automakers treating Pebble Beach like the Detroit Auto Show. At the current count, debuting this year is the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport, the Pininfarina Hyperion, and one other (much more interesting) car we can't tell you about 'till tomorrow morning. Sure would be nice to have, you know, old cars at the show too.

<![CDATA[Pininfarina Hyperion: Andrea's Last Hurrah Coming To Pebble Beach]]> Based on the Rolls Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe (plus a pile of collector money), the Pininfarina Hyperion represents the last coachbuilt automobile completed under the watchful eye of Andrea Pininfarina. Set to debut at the Pebble Beach Concours D'Elegance, the Hyperion will have to share the spotlight with the pop-top Veyron but we suspect it'll garner more attention considering the recent untimely death of Mr. Pininfarina. If we're honest about it, they may have whiffed the design a bit based on this first image, but it's probably pretty spectacular in person. [Carscoop]

<![CDATA[Porsche "No. 1" Coming To Pebble Beach]]> The Porsche officially known as the Type 356-001, but affectionately known simply as "No. 1," will be making it's first ever appearance in North America at this month's Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. The forefather of Bruce, originally designed by Dr. Ferdinand back in 1947, was supposed to be at the '98 Monterrey Historics for the brand's 50th anniversary, but was damaged in transit. Apparently it took another ten years for Porsche to decide to try it again — as the car now heads over to us from the fatherland to celebrate Porsche's 60th anniversary. So if you're a passionate Porsche purist, this may be your only chance to scope out "No. 1" on these shores for quite some time. The car's full story is in the press release after the jump.

Porsche celebrates 60 years by showing the mid-engine 'Porsche No. 1' sports car that Dr. Ferry Porsche built when he could not find the car of his dreams

Atlanta, August 5, 2008 - Porsche No. 1, the one-of-a-kind, two-seat sports car Dr. Ferdinand 'Ferry' Porsche developed and built after he searched and was unable to find the car of his dreams, makes its North American Concours d'Elegance debut when it joins other notable and historic vehicles August 14th at California's famed Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance.

This occasion is a happy one as Porsche No. 1's first North American trip, to Porsche's 50th Anniversary celebration at the Monterrey Historics in 1998, was thwarted when it was damaged in Chicago on its way to California. This trip also is special as it helps commemorate Porsche's 60th anniversary. Before arriving at the Pebble Beach Golf Links®, Porsche No. 1 had a starring role in Porsche Cars North America's 60th Anniversary celebration at its Atlanta corporate headquarters.

Affectionately called Porsche No. 1 by the Porsche family and thousands of the brand's loyal followers worldwide, this legendary sports car and the lynchpin of Porsche's design philosophy began life in June 1947 as engineering project Type 356 in the Porsche design office in Gmünd, Austria. Officially known as Type 356-001, Ferry Porsche's design concept took shape through the leadership of Karl Rabe, Porsche's talented chief designer who worked alongside Ferry's father to develop the original Volkswagen (VW).

In post-war Germany and Europe where resources were few yet the desire to rebuild was strong, the Porsche team diligently started building the innovative sports car. Starting with a hand-built tubular steel frame, engineers fitted already existing VW components including the suspension, headlights, clutch, gearbox, cable-operated brakes, worm-gear steering, and various small parts. VW parts were a natural choice due to the early VW-Porsche relationship and because of VW's key role in the post-war rebuilding effort after British military officers brought VW's Wolfsburg factory back online in 1945 to fulfill car demand and to stimulate the nation's economy.

The basic Volkswagen air-cooled, 1.31-liter flat-four engine put out just 25 horsepower at 3,300 rpm, so the skilled Porsche team enlarged the bore from 70 to 75 mm, increased compression from 5.8:1 to 7.0:1, and added slightly larger inlet valves and ports and twin carburetors, boosting output to between 35 and 40 horsepower.

The engine and transaxle were fitted into the frame in such a way that the engine ended up positioned in front of the rear axles with the transaxle trailing behind, making this a true mid-engine design. Mated to a four-speed gearbox, the drivetrain proved to be both lightweight and reliable.

Erwin Komenda, who along with Ferry Porsche and Karl Rabe formed the foundation of the fledgling car company, penned an aerodynamic and easy-to-build open roadster design. Friedrich Weber from Gmünd, one of just three of the company's body artisans, formed each of the car's aluminum body panels by hand, beating the then rare sheet metal and massaging it into shape over the wooden body buck Komenda had designed. The result was as shapely and beautiful as it was functional, with minimal protrusions to upset the aerodynamics or its visually graceful lines.

As with every Porsche since, form followed function on Porsche No. 1. The interior featured a bench seat to accommodate a third passenger if needed, a simple dash with only a tachometer (a speedometer was added later), a locking glove box, and map pockets on the leather door panels. An ample luggage compartment and the fuel tank were placed under the front hood, and the mid-engine layout provided space for a spare wheel and tire and battery behind the engine and above the transaxle. Finally, a frameless and low twin-panel front windscreen provided wind protection while accenting the sports car's gentile lines.

The unique roadster weighed merely 1,290 pounds, and thanks to the modified engine it could reach a top speed of between 84 and 87 mph. In May 1948, Ferry Porsche himself set off on the first long road test, driving from Gmünd to Zell am See, Austria. During the rigorous test drive over some of Europe's most spectacular climbs, the rear torsion bar suspension failed but was repaired en route. Through this car's entire test period, this proved to be the only mechanical failure.

Journalists tested the car on July 4, 1948, and Robert Braunscheweig, editor of Switzerland's highly respected Automobil Revue, concluded, "This is how we imagine modern road motoring to be, where the advantages of modern springing and the resultant driving comfort are combined with the adhesion of an equally modern, low and handy sports car." On July 11, with Herbert Kaes at the wheel, Porsche No. 1 won its class in the Rund um den Hofgarten local race in Innsbruck, Austria. Just as today, testing and competition proved to be solid underpinnings for the company's commercial and motorsports success.

Soon after, Porsche ramped up production of the 356 sports car at the company's tiny factory in Gmünd, abandoning the complex steel tube frame in favor of a stamped floor pan. The engine also was repositioned behind the axles to provide more interior space and room for a rear seat. Not too much later Porsche moved its production operations in 1950 to its current home in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen.

After passing through the hands of several owners, Porsche No. 1 was reacquired by Porsche AG and became a centerpiece in the Porsche museum. As Porsche nears completion of its new museum alongside the Porsche factory in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen, Porsche No. 1 will be prominently displayed in a way befitting the historic car that shaped all future Porsche vehicles.

<![CDATA[Retired Racer To Drive DB Panhard Coast To Coast]]> 72-year-old Jacques Grelley, a veteran of multiple LeMans 24-hour races, has decided to drive one of his rare DB Panhards from New York to northern California for the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. That's a 3000-mile journey in a 2-cylinder, 60 HP race car with the only luxuries being a retrofitted speedometer and muffler. But this won't be the longest road trip Grelley has been on...or the most primitive.

Last summer, Grelley and a friend drove from Paris to Beijing and back to Paris...in a Citroen 2CV. As the crow flies, that's over 10,200 miles, and about 22,000 miles on the road, all in a floppy car designed for peasants half a century ago. Needless to say, we can only hope to be half as cool as Jacques someday.

<![CDATA[Bugatti Veyron Targa To Bow At Pebble Beach, Car Snobs To Feign Disinterest]]> The Pebble Beach Concours D'Elegance usually plays host to the reveal of at least one high profile, high-dollar piece of driveway candy every year. This year is no exception with the Bugatti Veyron Targa expected to make an appearance and drop its very expensive top. And when we say expensive, what we really mean to say is ridiculously expensive.

The Veyron Targa will be available to a mere 80 lucky individuals willing to part with 1.14 million Euros ( $1.8 million in non-Monopoly money) for the chance to drive around on the decks of their cruise ships that burn dollar bills for fuel with the sun shining down while they gargle melted Godiva chocolate. So what if the weight is up and the top speed is down, it's built by Molsheim and it's exclusive, so go ahead and add it to the garage as a gift to your other Bugattis. [Edmunds Inside Line]
