@X5 Son of a Beach: I'm not at all sure how opining that it looks like it's been crying qualifies as schadenfreude, or indicates that the person who makes the observation doesn't like the design, but if you can read that much into a simple statement, perhaps you can finish this sentence from the one letter provided.

I wonder if that is the platform that they will be basing the Chevrolet Orlando on. If memory serves, they did indicate that they would be moving forward with production of that car.

@pauljones: With the exception of the boomerang headlights its not a bad looking hatch. And TDI makes it even more desirable. But apparently Americans want what they can't have and have what they don't want.
"Oh my GOSH I'm just sooooo excited I had to come out early and tell everybody all about myself and how fabulous I am! I'm sure you're all going to LUUUUUUUUUUURVE me!!!"
The ePRS (US Patent No. c11077983) translated the press release to this:
Opel decided to stop teasing the world with its emo-inspired plug-in hybrid and just come out of the closet. Officially introduced to the world at Geneva is the Opel Ampera and, to complete the ambiguously gay duo, the right-hand drive Vauxhall Ampera.
Carl-Peter Forster, GM Europe president, said that the Opel Ampera shows that GM is a leader in electric vehicles and not a Fugazian. This can only be seen as a slam at certain Asian automakers who made announcements today.
The Opel Ampera takes design cues from bands such as Dashboard Confessional and Coldplay.
The Ampera's wheels are constantly turned on [electricity], and can get a little jolt from an engine-generator extending its range from 60 km in pure electric mode to more than 500 km in hybrid mode.
The Opel Ampera can be plugged into any European household's 230V 50 Hz circuit.
The Ampera is the first practical electrically driven vehicle in Europe. It seats four, is flamboyant to drive, and can store 3 dead gigolos in its hind end.
The 16 kWh electric motor provides 370 Nm of torque. The engine-generator can run run on gasoline or E85. GM expects 0-62 times around 9s and a top speed of 161 km/h.
@Mad_Science: Its like seeing pictures of a hot actress and then seeing her in real life. Airbrushing and Photoshop create a tasty picture, but its all an illusion.
@Mad_Science: The 2010 Focus springs to mind. In photos, the car looks quite dynamic and interesting. In person, it's much more... vanilla. It's not ugly by any stretch of the imagination, but I walked past it probably 3 times before I even noticed it, and I was half-assedly looking for it.

Personally, I like the design, and, I suspect, so do a lot of others.

It's a much more elegant approach to the use of boomerang-esque shapes than Nissan's failed attempts.

They are under new management:

Which is part of what makes me think that they will produce it; despite the reality of sales, the new management is pushing for smaller cars.

I keep hoping the "wish and prayer" approach will work, but I am afraid that you are most likely correct.
We will not see it in this form or with a diesel, but I wouldn't be surprised if it turns out to be the admittedly uglier Chevrolet Orlando.

All too often pretty renderings like these are terribly executed in the physical world.
