You know what? I'm glad police in North America aren't getting these. I want to see the police have cars that aren't too fast... maybe eventually they'll enforce more than just speeding.
And also hopefully it will put an end to those stupid police chases.
The *smarter* way to get somebody (and this is what Toronto Police does) is they just try to see the plate and who it is and if the person starts to race, break off and instead pick them up at their place of residence at something like 6am when they'll be typically sleeping.
A night at the cricket is not complete without some drunk bogans getting hauled off by the cops in one of these, with everyone else chanting YOU'RE GOING HOME IN THE BACK OF A DIIIIVY VAN *clap clap* *clap clap clap* *clap clap clap clap* *clap clap*
But not, apparently, air conditioning or windows for the prisoner-holding part of the pod. (The larger middle door in the back opens up to a white plasticized tiny cell hence the large metal shackle).
This is a terrible design for two reasons: firstly, putting a prisoner (especially a drunk/high/angry/disoriented/mentally unstable one) into a windowless, hot slippery box doesn't do much for their temper or attitude to get them out the other end. That doesn't help cop or prisoner.
Secondly, in a climate like ours, it's not difficult to actually have temperatures so high that a prisoner held in an un-AC'd vehicle can be severely injured or killed. See for instance the recent death of a West Australian man on a longer transfer: http://www.news.com.au/story/0,27574,25629363-29277,00.html
These things are primarily designed as crowd control devices. As in, find a hopped-up meth head and stick them in the back where they can't really hurt themselves or anyone else. I've seen 6 police offices struggling to shove one guy into the back of one, but once you're in there, you're not coming back out until they decide you're good and ready.

@Iron coffin: Yes, but consider the things our equivalent Chevy Impala doesn't have:
-RWD
-Manual transmissions
-Handling
-Utes
-Wagons
-A chassis designed this millenium
I also hear your lawns are much greener than ours.
Ben, have you, perchance, become as badly addicted as I have to the Australian V8 Supercars championship? I know I managed to get engineerd horribly hooked on it, because I saw he shared my love for the V8 Aussies.
Send me a message if you don't already have access to it, I'll link you to the site.
@Deartháir II: The Return: Don't forget next weekend is the big one : the Bathurst 1000. Strap yourself into a comfy chair for 6 hours and watch the carnage begin.
@Thrashy, perpetual Minardi: If you get arrested, this is where they store your alcohol so you don't spill it on the way to jail. They're kind of considerate like that.

@Iron coffin: Yes, but we don't have them. Australia also has Wicked Weasel, and while they might be bored of them as well, I most certainly am not.

What is this? Is this the Security Pod where they slot you in after the arrest?
Remind me to never get arrested in Australia. They're hardcore.
