It's a good thing that's happening nowhere near me.

So what was it? Why 40 AMCs instead of 4 Chevelles? Was it pure opportunism, was the shear number of pristine and unwanted Kenosha malaise-sleds too huge to ignore? Or maybe, was Steve Green himself a little off-center, a little strange, competent but never a perfect fit? In the Gremlin, the Pacer, the Matador, did Steve Green see himself?
(Personally, I think the answer is self-evident.)

I know the pictured car is red, but black is really the only appropriate color for these.

I think the only Malaise car more desirable is an early one of those in Eagle form, 4wd, but otherwise nearly identical. And yes, black.

...I'll take your word, though. Can I drop one in, though? I could care less about the 258, and wasn't the Iron Duke standard for a couple years? Blech.
This, however, is important. Why?
The earlier Iron Dukes used the same bellhousing pattern as the small/big-block Chevy V8s. Park a 305 under there and you've got decent power practically free.

I don't know about the Iron Puke cars, but on 258 cars, the front diff actually mounts to the engine block, so there's some fabrication involved. My general distaste for Chevy Swaps in particular and cross-manufacturer swaps in general surfaces a bit here when i tell you that it's probably going to be easier in the long run to go all-AMC on such a swap, or at least use Mopar power, since that's where the rest of the drivetrain came from.
[Adds "Mopar", "AMC", and "drivetrain to FF's spell checker]

In Wisconsin, we make the cheese. We eat the cheese.
We brew the beer. We drink the beer.
We sewed the overalls. We wear the overalls.
We built the AMCs. We put 'em on trucks, shipped them right the Christ to Chicago and drove our Fords home for the night with no regrets.
My cousin worked at both the Racine plant and Kenosha Assembly. I still have his AMC SHIFT SUPERVISOR shop shirt. It's made of shoddy material, has widely varying panel gaps, and strangely for a garment, does not start on cold, wet mornings. Bidding starts at $50.

But please, y'all, don't harshly judge these poor refugees from the Isle of Misfit Cars. They're orphans. They need good homes and people who can appreciate them for their own weird goodness.
If I win the lottery, Murilee, I'll send you one of these cars every day, thereby removing all my rivals from contention.
