People say you shouldn't stay down there too long. Lose your sense of light and dark, lose your sense of smell...

@Mobius_1: It is more of a Long Island Rail Road thing, since some people got killed falling in the gap.

@Leeeeena, a Jalopchick: This is true because, if you're looking down and thus see the lettering, you can also see the several inches between the platform and the train.

Yes, yes- but does it come in In-Violet, Sassy Grass Green, Curious Yellow, or Tor-red? How about a 440 6-pak? No? Pfft.

Didn't really think that joke was too obscure for a cargeek site, but...

If you guys get the tingles from that map, prepare to have a full out mass transit orgasm. This site lists all sorts of neat abandoned or out of commission MTA NYC stuff.

As far-reaching and efficient as the New York subway system was in the latter part of the 1940s, Los Angeles had it beat with the largest light rail system in the world. . . back in 1910:

from the city with the largest light rail system to the city with the worst traffic. way to go LA!

i hope the magic win, not that i care about basketball, but at least orlando still has a working light rail system that connects the disney parks!

@diddiyo: Actually, LA didn't even make a recent top-5 list:

I was once a semi-proud user of LA's public transit rail system. Works ok if you live/work anywhere near a line or station.

@Ambiguously Unfunny Serial Killer: Rooting for the Lakers in the NBA is like cheering on the Yankees in MLB. Just don't do it unless you're from their hometown (I don't remember if you are).

@Tomsk Яespects the BuЯbeЯЯy BanhammeЯ: Lots of cities used to have great trolley systems that got replaced by lousy subways. I've heard stories from my mother and grand-mother of riding the trolleys around Atlanta in the 1930s-1950s with ease. Atlanta now has a rail/subway system with only TWO lines. It really only works if you want to go downtown for an event at the Dome/Arena/World Congress Center or to the airport IF you are 100% sure your flight will get back before it stops running for the night.
