Pontiac G8 GXP Laps Nurburgring In 8:30
Like seemingly every other GM product to be launched in the last year, the Pontiac G8 GXP’s handling was tuned on the Nurburgring. There, while being driven by development engineers (and not a professional race driver), it set a ring time of 8:30. That sounds pretty good, especially given the badge the G8 GXP wears on its nose and its price: expected to be just under $40,000 including gas guzzler tax and destination fee. But how good is it?

What Started The Porsche vs. Nissan Rivalry?
The Nissan GT-R may or may not be faster than the Porsche 911 Turbo, but Nissan has clearly scored an Axelrod-esque media victory over Porsche in the Porsche 911 Turbo v. Nissan GT-R Nürburgring controversy. The full extent of the triumph wasn't obvious to us until we read 993C4S's rivalry history lesson posted over at CarDomain today. Nissan, it appears, is even better at this than we imagined.

Corvette ZR1 Shaves Four Seconds Off Nürburgring Lap Time
With GM hotshoe Jan Magnussen in the cockpit of Zee Really fast One, the General's hypercar trimmed a staggering four seconds off its previous record-breaking lap time, bringing in a 7:22.4 lap around the 13-mile circuit. Although blisteringly quick, the ZR1's new time still falls short of the Viper ACR's best time of 7:22.1. We don't expect this glorious arms race to end anytime soon — not that we'd ever want these warriors of the raceway to quit duking it out. Guess it depends on whomever ends up owning the Viper brand.

Maserati Claims Fastest Production Nürburgring Lap In MC12, Pretends Viper Doesn't Exist
Joining the "we're faster than you and we can prove it in a completely unscientific way by racing around the same racetrack in a production car under various conditions and providing our own timing" club is the Maserati MC12, which now claims they've made the fastest production lap around the Nürburgring of 7:24.29, besting the feuding claims of Porsche and Nissan, which claim 7:34 and 7:29, respectively, for the 911 GT2 and Nissan GT-R, respectively. Although the MC12's still behind the Dodge Viper ACR, let's not ruin their day by pointing that out. More » -

Michael Schumacher Shows Off Ferrari California On The Nürburgring
As much as we'd like to see retired F1 champ Michael Schumacher grab a Ferrari by the neck and toss it around the Green Hell, that's not what happened here. Rather, this clip shows a bit of the recent Ferrari Racing Days at the Nürburgring in which Schumi shills for the new Ferrari California by cruising around the modern racing section of the track. That's right, there's no on-board footage of a hot lap around the old Nordschleife, but that's probably a good thing as far as Ferrari is concerned, since the decidedly soft California would probably only make an embarrassment of itself. Video after the jump.

Porsche Smells Rat, Claims Nissan Cheating On GT-R Nurburgring Lap Times
The boys at Porsche, obviously stunned that the Nissan GT-R achieved a claimed Nurburgring lap time of 7:29 — faster than either their 911 Turbo or GT2 — decided to do a little testing of their own. Using a stock GT-R sourced from the States, Porsche's 'Ring expert was able to perform a best lap of just 7:54, easily beaten by both the 911 Turbo (7:38) and GT2 (7:34). The results were no surprise to Porsche, considering that its cars have more power yet weigh less than the GT-R, leading the engineers in Stuttgart to claim Nissan was running its tests using race tires. Aston Martin Opens Nurburgring Test Center, Trackside VIP Lounge Coming Soon
Aston Martin has completed their on-site Nürburgring test facility, with an owners lounge to be following shortly. We're immediately more envious of Aston Martin owners — imagine the owner events held at the world's greatest test track. With Aston Martins. At the Nordschleife. As tempting the thought of a dedicated, exclusive, sports car owners hang-out is, the center will be used primarily during testing of new models like the Aston Martin Rapide, but a car geek can dream, right? 2010 Audi A7 Caught Testing, Crashing Near The Nürburgring
This Audi A7 mule was spied in Germany, but not ripping up the Nürburgring like you would expect. Rather, it was too busy bouncing off guardrails on a small country road located just off the racing circuit. It appears that the accident didn't involve any other vehicles (or any biodiesel), and the driver is said to be fine, but we can't be sure as to whether or not it was caused by a faulty component on the car or old-fashioned driver error. What is clear are the skid marks drawing a line straight into the left side guardrail— and then across the the road to the other guardrail. Looks like he must have been going pretty fast around that slippery sweeping turn. Oh well, at least Audi sent a trailer to drag it back home.
