The eight car-pileup at the Nürburgring, Germany's Mecca-like public race track, earlier this month was terrible, but I'm not surprised. I drove the track a few days later and found it to be the same wonderful gearhead nirvana I'd remembered, just with an extra dose of crazy.
Since yesterday's eight-car crash during a public day on the Nürburgring — known as touristenfahrten — more details have emerged about the cars involved and how the construction zone likely contributed to the multicar mishap.
An eight-car crash on the Nürburgring Nordschleife earlier today sent one driver to the hospital with serious injuries, claimed a rented Corvette Z06 and put one of the new BMW M3 "ring taxis" out of commission. It also caused more than $130,000 in property damage.
This Astra Nüburgring Edition ironically wiped out while racing around the Nürburgring. The cost? About $5,300. Of course that doesn't include the price of the air ambulance, a visit to the hospital and, of course, a new car.
