Miata Owner Gets Bored, Swaps In Jaguar V12

If you think a V8 in a Miata is an ambitious swap, just check out this guy's project. Yes, that's a 5.3-liter Jaguar V12, and if that wasn't enough, its fuel-injection system has been replaced with a project-car hell-worthy six-carburetor intake! Just listen to that baby purr.

Lego Maniac Blows Minds With 1440 RPM Mindstorms V8 Lego Engine

Lego Mindstorms is a brilliantly simple combination of sensors, actuators, and logic control that can be made to do the most devious and delightful things. Like this lego maniac who built an air-powered V8 engine with a rev counter on one of the cams. That counter tells us this baby can crank up to 1440 RPM, and that's without any kind of lubrication system. The cool part is, even though it's all plastic and powered by air, it still has that comforting V8 sound. (Hat tip to Phillip!)

How to Assemble A GM LS2 V8 In Under Three Minutes

Have you ever wondered how GM's LS2 V8 fits together? If so, today is your lucky day because this video goes through the process in a quick, orderly and computer generated environment. While it's not quite as cool as watching the engine building races on Hot Rod TV, it doesn't require the tolerance of deep a southern drawls and arduous product placement commentary. This only makes us wonder if there's one of these animations explaining how to build the rest of the Corvette. [Mechanical Engineering TV]

10 Strangest Cars Revealed At The 2008 Beijing Motor Show

The Beijing Motor Show traditionally warrants nothing more than a collective "meh" from the mainstream automotive media, but it certainly caught our attention this year. Bigger and better than ever, automakers from China and abroad have done everything to bring attention to their cars but put a gigantic stuffed elephant in one. Oh, no, wait. They've done that, too. But why shouldn't they show off — as the Chinese market continues to mature into it's teenage years, we've watched it shed some of the awkwardness of puberty, but still manage to showcase that youthful wide-eyed optimism with some truly innovative, unique and beautiful concepts. Still, like pimples, a cracking voice and a random desire for adorning oneself with chrome bits n' pieces, this teen still shows off it's rebellious side with vehicles that are completely bizarre, ridiculous knock-offs of popular designs or in most instances, both. Follow us below the jump through as we watch the coming of age tale that is the 2008 Beijing Motor Show. More »

The Chevy 350 V8-Powered Scion xB Defies Stereotypes, Logic

As we become a more automotively diverse culture you're bound to see dozens of modded Scions and JDM Nissans with Fairlady badges on one side of town, and some good old boys in their Camaros and small-block powered Novas on the other. Rick, of Whitemarsh, Maryland, has found a way to roll with both crews by dropping a stroked 350 V8 good for 450 horsepower in his 2004 Scion xB.

Working PaperCraft V12 Cranks And Lights Up

The visible V8 was the highlight of some of our younger years, planting the greasemonkey virus in our still mushy brains. While we've moved on from that fantastic toy, this miracle of man-hours has us yearning to build miniature fake engines again. This paper craft V12 kit, available from yeesjob.com is an impressive display of time, energy and talent, misguided or otherwise. When complete it features a rotating crankshaft, fan, pushrods, 12 pistons and their 12 connecting rods all simulating the motion of a real V12. To add to the flavor, each cylinder has a red and blue LED installed in the "head" to indicate a power cycle or an intake cycle - pretty spiffy. Now the shocking part: The kit comes with an easy to follow 595 page instruction manual. Let's hope you're very patient - and that the finished engine never has a run-in with a teething puppy.

Go Platinum Mining In Your CTS-V's Catalytic Converters!

Some folks say that catalytic converters were invented by Vladimir I. Lenin as part of a global commie conspiracy to deprive us of horsepower. Others allow that modern converters don't really post much of a restriction on an engine's exhaust flow. But regardless of where you stand on this issue, you'll probably agree that having chunks of catalyst material blow out the tailpipes of a Cadillac CTS-V and clank upon the garage floor is not what this car's owner had in mind when he installed the bigger turbocharger and ignition-system mods. Thanks to Saab-racin' LTDScott for the tip!

Beautiful Hand-Built Air-Cooled V12 Makes 68 HP Per Liter

68 horsepower per liter! Air-cooled? You betcha. This hand-built V12 engine, the fruit of hobbyist Ralf Drendel's labor, clocks in at a mere 87 cc's of displacement and cranks out a whopping mere 6 horsepower. That's three times the pistons of the worlds smallest 4 cylinder and probably three times the headaches. The little terror was designed with RC planes in mind, but it's so thirsty its creator is having second thoughts. You wouldn't believe how hard it is to find pictures of the beast, but the video, as you can see above, is utterly glorious. Hit the jump for a picture of the mighty mini wonder. More »

The V8-Powered Snowblower Owns Frosty's Ass

What do you do when you have a 454 c.i. chevy big block V8 and a massive amount of winter precipitation? While there are those among us that would rather toss it in a LeCar, Kai Grundt decided a six-year journey to create the world's greatest V8-powered snowblower was the way to go. Remember: engine displacement = snow displacement. There's no price on this monster, though the company claims that it'll build one. Either way, it's fun to look at. Full details below the jump:

PAL-V Flying Car Nearing Production! We're Totally Serious! No, Really!

It's a Carver. Wait, it's a gyroscope. No, it's both. It's called the PAL-V and it stands for Personal Air and Land Vehicle and it's supposedly going to be built very soon by a company named PAL-V Europe BV. What we think is it looks like it's the next flying car nearing production we fear will never end up being built. Based on the Carver One tri-wheel car, the PAL-V supposedly will use the same Dynamic Vehicle Control (DVC) system that keeps the Carver going straight and true in turns. That system automatically adjusts the tilt angle of the cockpit to the speed and acceleration of the vehicle enabling what the folks behind this device-to-never-be call "a plane-like tilting before cornering." That's great and all — but how does it fly? Simple — all they need to do is drop a set of gyrocopter blades on top. Sure, why not? Jeez — why do we continue to follow this dream...

Things To Do In Your Living Room With A Rover 3.5-Liter V8

Who knew the things you could do with a Rover 3.5-liter V8 engine when you've got it sitting in your living room? With a displacement of 3528 cc, there's all sorts of enough room for wine bottles, or you can use it as a coffee table, or even a coffee table holding wine bottles (we here tend to have alcohol on the brain, in hand, and down gullet, at all times). In fact, because this engine appeared not only in Rover cars, but was widely sold by Rover to small car builders — becoming the virtual de-facto standard British engine for hot rod use (much as has the Chevrolet small-block V8 for American builders) — there's a lot of them around. So grab a burbler that's quite burbling and be like these enterprising young urban autonistas, turning your love of the automobile into a love of furniture. Gallery of tables below. More »

Art and Science Indeed: Cadillac Does Xbox 360

Cadillac announced today it would offer a free, promotional content pack for Project Gotham Racing 3 on Xbox 360. The package includes all the accoutrements needed to race Caddy's three high-performance V-Series models: the 400hp CTS-V, 469hp STS-V and 443hp XLR-V. What's more, gamers who can finish in the top 100 in any of the models on the virtual N rburgring Full F1 Circuit can gain "Cadillac Elite" status, which will probably entitle them to certain privelages (prizes, downloads and some such) at some undetermined point in the future. No word on the existance of any hidden vid-game easter eggs or, say, cheat codes for a 1964 Coupe deVille or 1979 8/6/4-powered Seville. Well? More »

Renault Formula 1 V10 Engine Sings Mercury

To celebrate its 2005 Formula 1 constructors' championship, Renault team engineers slapped a RS25 V10 on a dynamometer and programmed the engine management software to play Queen's "We Are the Champions," using the tones of different RPMs. Auto blogger Paul Tan posted the MP3 on his site PaulTan.org. We once tried a similar trick with our old Rupp minibike, but blew a rod on the vocal break of "Bohemian Rhapsody." The poor Briggs and Stratton four stroke gave up somewhere around "Gali-le-oh."
