On a lighter note, these vehicles have proved very popular on this side of the pond, and certainly look very smart in the metal. Haven't driven one, but my friend Amanda says that they cut the mustard. So to speak.

Just sell that as the GTI. 99% of the public wont remember the Scirocco anyway. Its unique looking enough that i can stand on its own and will give buyers a better feeling because they wont just be "buying up a tarted up economy car".

All of the major manufactures do this, Rabbit GTI, Civic Si, Mazdaspeed 3, etc. Making the GTI its own model might get people interested in the car that wouldnt normally want to drive a rabbit.

with that said...i have a MK5 GTI and love every mile of it.

@GTI_MK5: Are you saying the Civic Si and Mazdaspeed3 are more differentiated from their base models than the GTI? I was thinking it was the other way around--the GTI doesn't have any Golf/Rabbit badging and seems to be even more "standalone" than the other two cars.

I think I said once that they should kill the R32--that's the car that needs more difference from the Rabbit--and bring the Scirocco here in its place.

im saying they are all really just started up economy cars. which is just fine...but if the GTI becomes a stand alone model with a distinct look it will have more cache etc.

I will let this slide...but if and only if they bring the Bluesport Roadster here with the 2.0T and a 6spd manual.

@GTI_MK5: I see where you were going, makes sense.

On the flipside, though, you'd think the Mitsu Lancer Evo and WRX STi might suffer from that...but more akin to what you're saying, those companies have really differentiated them from the 1/3-price econoboxes that they're based on (R32, more or less same thing).

@GTI_MK5: I think the GTI is just fine as it is--it's been a Golf with a habanero up its ass for many decades, and anything called GTI should be just that. Bring this here, keep calling it the Scirocco, and that's good.

VWOA does this with damn near everything. It's the reason we didn't get the A1. It's the reason we didn't get the TFSI engine, too. We don't get ALOT of things due to "it would compete with ourselves".

VW Group makes some great cars. They just have TERRIBLE market decisions. They're sort of the opposite universe GM. Instead of making shit cars and marketing genius, they make genius cars and marketing shit.

@Wankelin' For A Rotary: I mostly agree. But I never got my hopes up for either this car or the tfsi engine. The former is just way too close to their existing cars, and the latter is driven primarily by European taxation.

@Syrax: The Scirocco is actually *cheaper*, at least in the UK. But, yeah, VW could slap a premium on US market Sciroccos and get away with it, probably.

I'm personally surprised that VW dealers aren't up in arms about the loss of new product that would so clearly appeal to the aftermarket crowd.

let those who want it buy it as an option.. don't stock the lots with them... and yeah... charge a premium... i'd pay the premium for any hot hatch that europe gets and we don't........... as long as i can option it how i want...

i won't be able to buy one off of a lot in indiana... and i don't want to... but i wanna buy one.........
