Just wait till the 60k mile service interval. That is when you need to replace all of the brake hoses and the spark plugs.

Here is the service and maintenance guide for the GT-R:

@Chaparral: One of their technical writers obvisously has a sense of humor. There are SEVEN boxes to list the serial numbers of replacement transmissions in book! And if you actually drive a GT-R hard this is a 1,800 mile service, not a 18,000 mile service!

if the engineering of your transmission needs fluids with supernatural physical properties this tells me

    your engineers suck.

sniveling little troll cop-outs running to polymer and chemical engineers to help dig them out of the hole they CADD'd themselves into. all the while maintaining to keep their jobs and justify the payables to assorted consultants by giving product management and marketing the veritable reach around and arousing their blood lusts by feeding them saucy tales of revenue streams from hyper inflated specialty lubricants with exclusivity agreements.

we built machines that take people to the moon 40 years ago and now an AT cant be built without some sort of skywalker jizz lubing the works!?

    Xrist!

    @drive_thru_again: See my comment above.

I'm willing to bet this car was engineered to a price point and an on-paper spec sheet.

Which meant when they came across the problems inherent to building a super-turboed 400hp AWD flappy-paddle compu-monster, they didn't spend the extra few thousand man-hours to fix issues like this. Which is why it costs 70k, not the 120k that "equivalent" (on paper) machines do.

But all of this is a management call, not an engineering call.

Also...depending on the "we" you're referring to, I'm pretty sure Nissan management had nothing to do with the moon landings.

$9.67 more than I paid for my Miata. Which is a car you actually drive, not merely operate. Hmmph.

Just out of curiosity, anyone know what a dealer service on a 911 turbo runs? You know, seeing as how that was their target when developing the GT-R.

How do you make a $70k car that performs like a $120k car?

You don't have your engineers spend extra time working out that "the only way our transmission holds together is with this ridiculously expensive fluid changed every $18k miles" issue.

While I appreciate their performance and low purchase price, I do not expect these cars to age well.

@Mad_Science: As much as I'd love to disagree, I think you're right. They're going to be bought by three groups of people, the douchebags who buy them for status and don't maintain them properly (because of the cost), the ricers with money who will molest them (and likely cut corners on maintenance), and the wannabe racers who will flog them to within an inch of their life.

I fear very few will make it to the used market in good condition, thus keeping the resale on them high.

Labor fee at the local Lotus dealer might be a bit obscene but material cost shouldn't be much worse than the Toyota.

I'm no fan of manu-matics, but the one in the GTR does perform well when it's working. I'd be the first in line for a six-speed, but us traditionalists are in the minority. Just look at the auto/manual breakdown for standard Corvettes.

@leighzbohns: Whatever happened to just driving a car that was fun to drive and not being concerned with what kind of person drives it. Yes lots of mid-life crisis grey haired men drive Vettes. I dont even particularly like them but I bet they are fun as hell to drive. GT-Rs and Skylines have terrible reputations from those Arab Princes and rabid 15 yr olds with Fast and Furious hard ons, but my Skyline is one hell of a fun car to drive. Its a shame that the ladies dont care what it is and the only attention I get is from those aforementioned 15 yr olds.
