New cars are collectively "Crack Pipe" but since gas prices are pretty low, it should be "Nice Price" in a while, unless the economy recovers (ie politicians know what is going on, what they should be doing, and actually doing it) and the USA starts buying Chinese plastic toys all over again.
But this should do well in London since Ken Livingstone somehow decided Prii/RX450hs/GS450hs/LS600hls are more environmentally friendly than a small, European, diesel hatchback. He probably thought Hybrid meant some kind of magical motor that runs on air...
If the Prius "starts" at $21K, what do you get for the money? For example, is a driver's side airbag optional? Do I get AC, or at least power steering?
@NewbiusMaximus: And the most important question: how many Hybrid badges do they put on the car for that price? Can you get more as options? Can you get "Yeah, It's got a HEMI" stickers? Or that "Over/Under" decal from yesterday?
@Leeeeena the Jalopchick: Who hasn't? It is almost as good as the yellow Camaro's rear bumper which happens to be a certain famous blog's editor-in-chief as well!
So yeah, A Strooooolling the Jalopplayer, was that a factory option or aftermarket? :)
@Baron Schm Von Shamwoüzen memes ur memes.: I'm sorry, look. I understand where you're coming from, but you gotta at least read what you're writing! No one would rather have a Hyundai Getz. No one.
@Gutpunch McRodbender, a strolling player's understudy: i'd never heard of a hyundai getz but i just googled it and, yes, i would much rather have one of them than a hybrid. it's not quite as offensive to look at and it looks like it would be much more exciting to drive. you can convince yourself that hybrids are cool but you'll never fool others. sorry.
@TENGRAM killed JR: I'm not trying to convince anyone that they're "cool", just maybe suggesting that it really isn't as offensive a car as everyone seems to think. There's no need for hating on anything at all.
Good to note: just because something looks more exciting to drive doesn't mean it is. If you'd rather have sixty-five horsepower than a hundred ten, be my guest.
I also recommend the Brasil/Russia/China/Argentina sites of major automakers (VW particularly). They always have cool region specific models there, most of which probably should have been discontinued 10 years ago.
@TENGRAM killed JR: eh, I guess we just have different tastes. Are you a child of the 80s by chance? That might explain your affinity to the box shape of the Getz.
@Baron Schm Von Shamwoüzen memes ur memes.: Same as above. You really got me at cost, I won't lie. The Getz is a better value than a Prius. Dang, how did we get to debating Hyundai Getz vs. Toyota Prius? Worst flame war in Jalopnik history.
@kumbayacars: Not a flame war, just a stimulating intellectual debate. Fuck Garage 419, bring on the Getz-Prius smackdown! (Personally, I'd rather pay more and buy the Swift anyway)
@Baron Schm Von Shamwoüzen memes ur memes.: Oh, and a heart for kumbayacars, for his spirited defense of the Prius. Although, I think either Ash or somebody actually has a Prius.
@Baron Schm Von Shamwoüzen memes ur memes.: I can't say that I understand what aforementioned image has to do with anything called "Prius" or "Getz". I can't say that I'm bothered, though.
@Baron Schm Von Shamwoüzen memes ur memes.: Ah, my dear Baron: You haff forgotten the A Class Mercedes..I averaged 50 mpg in one in 2005 in Italy and I drive like an Italian.
Only $20,500 more then a used Ford Tempo. How many miles then, do you have to drive your Prius to earn back the money wasted through opting for the Prius?
@Ford Tempo Fanatic: Or $19,000 more than a used Thunderbird LX 4.6L V8, which is roomier, more comfortable, RWD, cheap to insure, noone will steal it, safe in a crash and easy to find parts for. And at even 17mpg city 23 Hwy, it'll take years before the cost of the Prius even compares. Oh, and for an additional $200 you can equip it with an in-dash navigation system, also available in other configurations on Ford Tempo.
Well, if it was restyled...and drove completely differently...and did away with that regenerative braking bullshit...and didn't carry copious amounts of smug with it...and...wasn't a Prius at all, actually. I think...Yes, I'm positive I'm just describing a normal car.
I'll stick with my 40mpg Suzuki Swift thanks. Why does the market really need hybrid cars anyways. A well made four cylinder can easily outdo a hybrid in mpg. I, honestly, think that hybrid cars are a sham. Consumers are too damn picky/lazy to accept a no frills car that has nothing but a high mpg engine and nothing else. Sorry if i offend anyone.
@Gutpunch McRodbender, a strolling player's understudy: have you sat in a metro/swift? i'm 6' 2" and had no problem fitting in my old one comfortably. hell, i even used to sleep well in it. it's also not uncommon for them to get 50+mpg. let's not even start on the price.
@TENGRAM killed JR: I'm 6'2" and have no problems fitting in my Prius comfortably, and I've slept well in it, too. Your Metro still didn't hold nearly as much shit and people--try getting four people, all their shit, an ice chest and a tent to Bonnaroo in a Metro, betcha can't! It's not uncommon for Priuses, even older ones, to get 60+ mpg. I won't start on the price.
@Gutpunch McRodbender, a strolling player's understudy: i can't say that a metro will carry more junk, but i never ever had to leave anything behind. as for being faster, a caterpillar is faster than a snail. SFW? and honestly, i'm not convinced that it is faster. got any numbers to support that claim?
@TENGRAM killed JR: 0-60, manual transmission, 1.0L I3, 5-speed manual: 16.2 seconds. That's the version you'd want for fuel economy, anyway. [www.latimes.com]
The '04-09 Prius does that in 10.6 seconds. You should be able to find a road test on that easy. The '10 is said to do it in 9.8. I'd call that "considerable".
@Pleco, the jalopNick: Wes's review, if I recall correctly, observed that the '10 model actually drives well--not just decent, like the Insight, but full-on good to drive. This is an enormous step up from the 2004-09 Prius which, while I love it, is sort of like navigating a slice of bread out of a toaster using only a stick of butter.
@Pleco, the jalopNick: As much as I'd like to have one, I really don't trust myself on a motorcycle. Barring that, it's a lot more difficult to carry four friends or any stuff at all on a bike...
I mean, it's the Prius. It could well have been Wes Siler's review of the new Bosch dishwasher. I wasn't exactly riveted.
I care about the Insight because it presents a challenge to the Prius and just... looks better.
Full disclosure: I was also hired to write a bunch of articles for hondainsightreviews.com , a site which has yet to launch (and I don't think it ever will-- I think they may have lost interest in the project) and harbor strong feelings about the car I gathered 400+ pictures of from the HondaNews media site and read tons of press-releases about.
Plus, how can you fault the Insight when it has neato options like the Zero-Lift bodykit?

you should have at least used a more flattering picture of the prius and i'm sure there are worse pictures of the getz. come on man.
