HEY ALAN, Camry drivers are always going to buy Toyotas, stop alienating your current customer base! You fuckwit!

I had a previous-gen Fusion as a press car. It was a four-banger five-speed with the sport package. Possibly the only car in the U.S. with that configuration. Decent car. 'Course when it came time to buy a car of my own, I got a Mazda3. [/the usual Euro-Ford-deprived bitterness]

The time seems to have arrived when American cars can be compared head-to-head with the best in the class. GM doesn't seem to be that far behind Ford, judging from the Malibu. I hope some of the folks who have been saying they'd get an American car as soon as Detroit began building quality cars again will put their money where their mouths are. Honda and Toyota's latest products in this segment sure make it an easier choice, too.

No, you don't have to thank me. Just keep sending the checks.

Enthusiasts want manuals these days in the US, not commuters.

I want to be able to choose manual or auto in all small or medium sized cars. You notice VW, Audi and BMW do this? Why do you think they do it? Because 'The US doesn't want manual transmissions'? Wake up, Homer. US auto makers will never get me to buy their cars until I can get 'em built like I want 'em. Just like they used to do.
And I'm not the only guy who wants this choice.

While we're at it, what happened to the whole 30 part "Bold Moves" series of video clips?
Wait...just found them:

Apparently the last one was a year ago. Might be funny to do some analysis on how all the "moves" they proposed played out.

It is shocking to me how bad US cars can look and perform when the same "global enterprise" offers exciting hardware in Europe. Had a blast in the last turbodiesel I drove in the UK, yet it can't be had for any price on this shore. Hasn't anybody in Dearborn driven a Mondeo???
Is there some problem with your mail system that you can't just have Ford of Europe send over the prints? Continuing to built ugly crapcars here, it's a wonder that the formerly big 2.1 aren't all owned by Toyota or Porsche by now.

And when are they going to fix the Focus? With the direction of economy, it seems more families will be shopping in that cheaper, more fuel-efficient class.

While fuel economy is very important to her, she was willing to sacrifice it a bit for smoothness and a bit more pep.

It's really not all that bad, it just really doesn't match the rest of the car.

I've noticed on Ecomodder that a lot of cars can do perfectly well all year round with their grille openings completely closed off. If that's an option, could we perhaps reduce the grotesque grille and maybe shave a little size off the gaping fishmouth below the bumper? Hmm?
As to the rest of it, I call it a Malibu fighter. Sign me up for the test drive, especially if I can have the thrifty 4-banger with the 6-speed tranny.

Now, let's hope they carried this design theme over to the rear, which currently needs a bit of work.
Also, kudos for realizing that a mid-level engine is a nice thing to have. Now it's Toyonda's turn to figure out that plenty of consumers would gladly buy something with more nut than the four-banger, but less torque-steer and thirst than the full-on 250-HP-plus six.
