    Two tons has always been too much for a family sedan. Even one without pretensions to driving ability. Audi's slimming down is a step in the right direction.

    @FurtiveParsnip: I've always thought of the K2500 as sort of a heavy duty half ton. Park it next to my mom's 1500 Silverado and they are nearly identical in every dimension with similar towing capacity and engine output.

    The S5 is the most beautiful design to come out of any car company in a long time, but I wish they could have kept it from getting this porky in the first place. You can always add dead hooker ballast if necessary.

    Wasn't the A8 supposed to begin this trend in 1994? That's fifteen years of experience with aluminum (or al-yoo-min-yum, if you prefer) and it still weighs well over 4000lbs. In fifteen years the S5 will weigh much less because it'll be stripped and up on blocks in some ex-millionaire's front yard.

    @Number_six: Shouldn't harsh on Audi for use of aluminum. The A8 is a full 500 pounds lighter than a 7-series Bimmer and has better interior room. Unfortunately, aluminum is obscenely expensive and hard to work with (hence, expensive). The A8 is one of the least expensive aluminum space frames out there with the exception of the Lotus Elise, a totally different car. Is the S5 a porker? Absolutely. But the A8 at 4300 lbs is relatively svelte.


    BMW gave it a shot with a part-Al 5-series but is going to all-steel on the next version.

    So the progression of the S4; Twin-turbo v6 to a V8 then to a supercharged 6 and now to a turbo (single?) 4 banger? Mehh. Are they going to downsize the A4 to a 3 cylinder engine?

    It is amazing how heavy these little beauts are, but really, if you gotta cut weight, does it have to be by downsizing the engine? Weight can be cut post-purchase by those who really give a crap, but upsizing the engine isn't so easy.


    I love Audi wagons, bloated or not.

    @eggwich del fiero - now with Curb Rash: Well, keep in mind the TT-RS has an inline five that makes 340 HP, same as the current S4, with a torque curve flat as a pancake. A couple years worth of development and there's no reason a 4-cyl won't do the same.

    @TexanIdiot25's Chevrolet CST10 is on the streets!: 2WD RCSB GMT800. Had it weighed a couple years ago.


    My '92 is even lighter, somewhere around 3700-3800lbs.
