    In AZ, if you can find a plate (on E-Bay, for example), from the original model year of your vehicle that isn't being used on some current plate, you can register that without even paying the extra $25 for a personalized/historic plate. $22.50 for a year with this one on my '69 Volvo 145.

    2. $25? That's a shakedown? Are you fucking shitting me? In South Carolina, you pay property tax on cars, and it's a LOT more than New York motorists pay in registration fees and such. New Yorkers have no reason whatsoever to bitch. If anything, they should be glad to be getting rid of those godawful blue and white plates. #licenseplates

    @LS1RX7owen: Actually, I used to live in SC, but now live in NY.

    In South Carolina, you pay an annual tax on your vehicle that varies with the car's value. Thus, if you aren't driving some kind of worthless jalopy, they stick you good. I believe I used to pay at least $60 PER VEHICLE per year twenty years ago. Registration is a separate fee.

    Since state law says insurance companies aren't allowed to discriminate against bad drivers, insurance rates are the highest in the nation, and most auto insurers have already fled the state.

    In New York, registration fees are a flat $24/year. The tags are only changed out every several years. Given that the blue and white plates we currently have SUCK BIG TIME, I'm not complaining. #licenseplates

    I don't want to hold up California as a model of, well, anything but at least here you get a plate and it stays the life of the car. They just issue a highly visible sticker that tells the cops what month and year the registration expires. #licenseplates

    I personally don't understand why we all cant have one license plate, and then a special denominator or something to designate which state the car is from. Contract it out to some company, and get it out of our in-efficient government's hands. If you look at the DMV (at least where I live) you will see 1. What a racket it is and 2) How flawed the system is a whole. #licenseplates

    I keep this on the front of my Lotus... I'm not ruining the look of my car because NY requires a stupid front plate. Its a special order and yes that is my real plate number. The police have never bothered me about it either. #licenseplates

    @KeyserSoze: All of these cars have a 'self destruct' package of sorts. It's called 'British engineering'.

    Awful. Absolutely awful. The color combination it terrible and there's less contrast. And why in the hell does the top blue bar have a curve to it? Why is it crowding "New York"? I also never understood the practice of using the state as a point. It looks like a meaningless blob.

    Why do state governments have such piss poor design sense. And where do they find the hacks to design this junk? They probably spend tens of thousands more than they needed to and got crap to show for it.

    This is almost as bad as the excessive use of gradients or low quality photos on plates in other states. It's the kind of work you get from a first-year design student who just discovered Adobe Illustrator. Why can't they just design simply, classy license plates like Europe or Japan. Or like any NY plates used from the 70s on back.

    And I love how these dimwits come up with these arbitrary nonsensical predictions about what this new plate is going to accomplish. I'm still trying to figure out how reduced contrast and clashing colors increases visibility.

    @MaWeiTao: actually, I can kind of see the visibility argument a little. The current ones are really reflective and tend to wash out completely in certain lights, especially when photographed. They probably think that something non-reflective will be actually be easier to see, thus netting more tickets from red light and EZ-pass cameras. So... win-win for NY state. #licenseplates

    @MaWeiTao: It's not like the white plates aren't reflective or anything (well, I think vanity plates are just flat plastic in NY, but I'm not douchey enough to have a set myself).

    I miss the Statue of Liberty plates -- it used the statue as the point, but then NJ annexed that island, hence the switch to the current design with the Falls and NYC above, since the Statue isn't in NY anymore. Screw off, New Jersey. #licenseplates

    @Muscles Marinara: That plate is being washed out in the photo because whoever took it used a flash. The photograph was exposed for the car which is why it looks good and the reflective plate is almost completely blown out. You can see this effect in photos of interiors. The inside looks great but the windows are all white. #licenseplates

    @veronykah: Good point. I didn't think about that, but then again, I highly doubt the flashes they use in tollbooths and at red lights have the ability to meter a license plate on a moving car. Just tryin to play devil's advocate here I guess. And, depending on how they're angled towards you, the white plates can still be hard to read at night with headlights shining on them. #licenseplates

    I liked the old Blue and Gold plates, I thought they looked classy. And I kindof like the new ones. But usually, when a state changes plates, they just roll them out as old plates expire and are turned it. What NYS is trying to do is fleece taxpayers. But that's nothing New in New York. And that's a big reason why I left that floundering, corruption cesspool of a state.

    The NYS legislature just took a nice, long, taxpayer-paid vacation down in Puerto Rico. (Probably to court the Latino vote). And now they need the cash to pay for it. Screw. Them. #licenseplates

    Every other time NY has switched plates, they just send you new plates when you renew your registration (which keeps getting more expensive). So, yeah, it's a naked revenue grab.

    ...not to mention, that new design is really, really ugly.

    ...and we have to put them on the front, too.

    Long ago, I vowed to not own a home as long as I'm living in NY (credit and equity be damned, I'm not paying some of the highest property taxes in the country); I guess this is just one more reason for me to keep looking for somewhere less overtly greedy to live.

    As an aside, our governor, who was not elected, thinks it's racism that keeps people from wanting him to run for governor when his term ends. It turns out, it's because he's a douchebag. I do not care that he is black and legally blind; I care that we didn't pick him, and he doesn't give a shit about what this state thinks. I'm willing to bet also that he isn't even aware that New York extends west of Albany. Statewide officeholders really do not worry about the fact that most of the state is surprisingly poor, as long as we keep subsidizing NYC's sprawl and bullshit. #licenseplates

    @Mike Tunney: The ten counties in the US with the highest property tax rates (i.e., as a percentage of home value) are in upstate NY. Nine of them are poor-ass rural counties, and the tenth includes Rochester (which, to it's credit, is less broke than Buffalo). Homes are worth less, people make less, but the bureacracy has to stay afloat somehow.

    If only Jersey would bring back the blue plates. The current yellow ones just don't cut it.

    The initial design for the "United We Stand" 9/11 plates was a red white a blue plate which, as an owner of a red truck, I was seriously liking so I could get rid of my McDonald's theme. But when they finally got around to releasing it, it went to the lovely red,yellow and blue. #licenseplates

    This is Colorado's "regular" license plate now (colors have been reversed from previous years). However, there are at least 100 special editions you can get, and those come in probably every color in the rainbow.

    It used to be so easy to spot a Colorado vehicle because of the green & white plate......it's not so easy now. #licenseplates

    In Ohio, the governor cancelled an impending replate this year because he didn't think motorists should be "burdened" with the costs of new plates during a recession - a whopping $2.50. Also, he waited to make this decision until after the state manufactured and paid for a million of the new plates.

    So, now the state's trying to unload a warehouse of now extra-cost, optional-issue plates. And that's probably a good thing, because the new issue is one of the most hideous plates I've seen in a long time. #licenseplates

    @Who's A Toaster!!??: Yep. The current Ohio slogan is well-earned, albeit clunky (I liked the old "The Heart of it All!" slogan better). However, that doesn't excuse the hideous plate designs the state has had most of this decade. As tacky and poorly designed as the current plate is (the state name and slogan are not legible from a car length back - fail), this new one is all that and more. Why can't states make simple, boring plates that don't detract from the appearance of my vehicle? #licenseplates
