    The fact is, that the new twin turbo can be pushed harder than it will be spec'ed for the new Z4. Even a relatively straightforward flash should be able to get you 350 HP. So while I do indeed think that the last Z4 M Coupe was true sex on wheels, the new machine will be easier to hot rod. And for that, we all should be thankful.

    My '97 W210 E320 was the last year of the straight-six for U.S. spec Benzes (I believe). Based on what I've heard of the V6 3.2 and 3.5 successors, I am grateful for the straight-six, with its 7+ quart oil sump.

    @Charles_Barrett - Now with Variable-Valve Timing: I've got to say... you've definitely got a point there, as I'm rather fond of them as well... I, too, hate... no, loathe... even despise this whole cutting-off-hyphenated-words thing.


    Preview doesn't show it cutting "cutting" through "words" in half. Fingers crossed.

    @Wes Siler: So obvious (like the boogaloo) it plum evaded me. Thank you for 'splaining that. Not that there are many BMWs newer than the M1 that really appeal to me, but I agree that they seem to have slipped from "driver's car" to "poseur's car" of late. Not to say they haven't been a favorite of tools and poseurs for years, but BMW seems to be embracing that segment of the market of late.

    Not really they have nothing in common except the semi dry sump oil system.


    I am lucky enough to own this engine in my 04 M3. It is a blast, civil under 4 k rpm, but once it hit 4k rpm it screams all the way up to 8k rpm. I am double lucky and have the SMG gearbox that allows shifts under .08 seconds.


    Over 100hp per liter without turbo/supercharger is an amazing number in 1999 when this engine was designed, and still is impressive. What people forget was in 1999 this was faster then any Porsche except for Turbo's in a straight line with a 0-60 of 4.8 seconds (m3). It is still faster then a Boxster/Caiman S until the next years direct injection engines are out.


    Cool feature

    Double Vanos

    6 Individual throttle bodies


    Small bummers

    Needs a valve job every 25k miles (about $1500 USD)

    Can only use Castrol 10w-60 (not a typo)

    Very very hard to get more performance out of cheaply, the engine was too well tuned.

    Z4m is slightly slower for some reason then the e46 M3.

    @morcheeba: Valve job? my 30 k mile Blackbird never heard of that, and gets 145 hp/litre naturaly aspirated.

    @BЯдΖǐL-ЯЄРΘЯΤЄЯ - Ho Ho Ho, it´s summer here: true but at 10k rpm, what does it make at 8k? Hp goes up with rpm, and only 88lbf of torque at 7250k rpm...


    I will argue that the vq35de (new one) is pretty impressive at 303 hp and 3.5 liters with nice torque and is a 100k mile engine.

    @Foo2rama: Toyota made 162 horsepower from 1.6 liter in 1995 with the naturally aspirated "Blacktop" 4A-GE 20 valve engine. I'm no Toyota fanboy, but I am a fan of that engine. I'd very much like one in a 1st gen. MR-2. Or in a Se7en, maybe.

    no one will ever read this comment that goes against the grain, however, I don't agree. I have a black z4m coupe, which I believe is one of the most beautiful designs for a car... definitely the prettiest I've ever owned. The z across the side is pure genius, and the overall shape is very "bat-like". I think that it will be a design that will be appreciated more as time goes on, as the future progresses towards more bland and "safe" designs. Alexio out.

    @alexio: I agree that the current design works better for the coupe. That's the best looking car BMW has right now, IMHO. My coworker has a 99 M Coupe (with DINAN, Bilstein, etc), which is also a fantastic design. Neither of the related roadsters really did much for me.
