@IamZardoz: It's apparently the least stolen car in the US. So, well, that's one reason!

Bangle wasn't a terrible designer, he was just ahead of his time.

@top-dead-center: Previously posted in another thread, but no less relevant:

Last time I checked, Chris Bangle was still the lead design man over at BMW, which would mean that this car, too, is another aspect of "the horridness that was Chris Bangle".

But were Bangle's designs such a horrible failure as everyone thinks? Yes, they were polarizing. That is usually the sign of good design work. Whether people like it or not, they still think about it, and still talk about it. That is what design is about. It isn't about pleasing everyone. It's about stirring emotion and opinion one way or the other under the philosophy that being hated is better than being forgotten. And Bangle's designs have done just that. Additionally, Bangle's designs have sold like hotcakes. The most commonly derided of his designs is the 7-series; oddly enough, his 7-series design has sold in far greater numbers than previous iterations of the 7-series.

I don't always like his designs, but I respect him as a car designer.

@pauljones: No exceptions. Japanese are prime offenders when it comes to that logic. It's obvious that the Japanese come up with the craziest names and the ugliest designs to sell the otherwise the dullest crap imaginable.

And is there anyone here who thinks, as I do, that the CLS is mind-bendingly ugly?

@The Gawker Empire will increase Parkington's productivity b...: Yarr, the CLS is the best-looking Benz in recent history. It raised the bar for the new C and SL to look good. Apparently the E didn't quite follow, though.

@seoultrain: On the contrary, the SL did follow the CLS theme, but the E followed the C theme too much, and became a caricature of itself in the most boxy way imaginable. Hence the Malaise era dashboard. Even Mercedes is following suit.

Question: How high a level of automotive awesomeness could you achieve with the money that could otherwise be spent on a new E-Class?

I bet I could buy at least three Honda 600s and enough parts to keep them running while two friends and I raced them on the Garden State Parkway for an entire season. Cost of painting them in bitchin classic color schemes included. And gas.

@Bumblebee: When considering high-end cars, I tend to convert the price into El Caminos. Nominally, a decent driver El Camino is $5k.

Meaning this probably has a price range from 12-20something El Caminos.

That's a lot of El Caminos.

Actually, I am quite impressed. That is not nearly as terrible looking as I was expecting it to be. Let me know when they come out with the E65 Black Series with that massive twin-turbo V12.
