2009 Skoda Superb Supremely Safe, Achieves Five Stars In Euro-NCAP Tests

When we first saw the 2009 Skoda Superb we got weak in the knees. We asked the doctor to Czech us out and his Prague-nosis was that this Passat platform mate, with its twindoor system, was just too sexy. We know, it's a liftback sedan like all the others. But is it? Euro-NCAP, sort of the IIHS of Europe, tested the Superb and gave it five stars or 35 points for the protection of adults and 40 points for the protection of children. The big difference? Renault Celebrates 5-Star NCAP Crash Testing...By Crashing Some Cars


Crashing some cars totally seems like a good way to celebrate an all-lineup five-star showing in NCAP frontal testing, and we're glad to see Renault's got the guts to do it. This German commercial for the French automaker's a great example of why ballet is best viewed when performed by cars, and why we love to see mechanical things of any sort hitting each other.

Brilliance BC3 Turbo Coupe Coming To China For $15,000

Brilliance, the automaker most recently associated with crashtastic Euro NCAP testing, plans to release the BC3 coupe shown at the Geneva Auto Show earlier this year. First Brilliance plans to drop the 170 HP turbocharged 1.8-liter four-cylinder two-door in the local market this year, Europe in 2008 and perhaps even as a US offering the year after. We'll wait and see — first they've got to get through NCAP and then, more importantly, NHTSA crash testing. [via Edmunds]

Did you know that a Smart car has better adult occupant protection than a 2007 Chrysler Voyager? Why does the diminutive Smart score 3 stars to the behemoth Voyager's 1 ½? How does a Toyota Prius offer better child protection than a Jeep Grand Cherokee? The European New Car Assessment Program is an independent research body tasked with testing vehicle safety. After purchasing vehicles from dealers, they run them through some of the toughest safety tests around then tell you, the general public, how each car faired in completely unbiased, often harsh, minute detail. It's worth reading for the schadenfreude factor alone, but if a new car purchase looms, Euro NCAP is an invaluable resource. [Euro NCAP]

Uh Oh, Aveo: Europe's NCAP Calls Out Three-Star-Safe Chevy for Poor Front Crash Performance

According to Europe's car-safety gurus, NCAP, the Chevrolet Aveo is a safe car, as long as you don't hit anything head-on. Then, it turns into the most economical enabler of catastrophic chest compression you can buy. Singled out as having an "unacceptably high risk of life-threatening injury to the driver s chest," the Aveo nonetheless scored a three-star rating from the agency. More »
