I just remembered that Detroit Auto Show hasn't happened yet. With all those manufacturers pulling out, somehow my mind thought it was done already. Pah.

Can we just choose the Genesis and Jetta as Cars of the Year, and ignore these bloated dick-waving trucks and this jacked-up station wagon entirely?

It's official: the North American Automobile Market just plain sucks.

The Flex makes the finals but the GT-R doesn't?

How big of a bloc vote does the AARP get in this contest?

Kwit yer bitchin'! The GT-R already won COTY!

@pauljones: The GT-R hasn't won squat in this contest. Past winners include Prius, Civic, Aura and Malibu - all dull snoozers for Zycor-with-a-Geritol chaser set.

My teeth don't go in a glass at night (yet) - these cars just don't appeal to me.

    @NiceNurseRatched:

Well, here's the link to the Motor Trend website that proudly displays the GT-R as their Car of The Year, which is considered to be a pretty damned prestigious award. Slightly less prestigious, but nevertheless relevant, is Automobile Magazine's selection of the GT--R as their automobile of the year. Now, maybe my reading skills have gone down the drain in recent years, but I could be wrong.

The links are below. Decide for yourself.

There are two of the most prestigious awards in the automotive industry that have just been accorded to the GT-R.

    Get over yourself already.

I really like that Hyundai, even including the facehugger style grille. I think they'd do well to drop the Hyundai name for it though, and work at being the first Korean Lexus emulators.

Truck-wise, I'm not really informed enough to comment. All I can say is, having ran both as company cars, the ML320 is older than christ, bluetec or not, and for me is roundly whipped in every area by the also US built BMW X5.

@Rust-MyEnemy 20v Turbo: There are rumors circulating they'll do just that (a specific Genesis brand). Probably a wise idea.

I thought the ML chassis was completely new a couple years back (shares platform with GL-class and R-class, I think). And yeah, the X5 is better, but I suspect it's the diesel availability working in the car's favor...Merc are currently the only diesel SUVs offered here. X5 will be another year or two, assuming they follow through.

@The Name's Ash78, Housewares: Yeah, ML was launched here at the beginning of '05. It seems longer when you have to stare at the buggers all day long.

It's such a shame you don't have the X5 diesels yet. The 3.0 Twin Turbo is awesome. Scary fast, too.

While I'd rather listen to Funkmaster Flex in a Genesis than listen to Genesis in a the Funky Flex, but really i think I'd prefer enjoying the Kraftwerk of the TDI.

I'm pulling for Hyundai or VW here. Sadly, the last couple years of screwed-up diesel fuel prices in the US really don't do the tdi any favors in the short term ($1.50 vs $2.50 a gallon, anyone?). The Flex is okay, but not nearly as groundbreaking as the other two. Woo-hoo, another minivan. I like Ford and think it's a good choice vs an SUV, though.

Interesting to see if people will riot if a Mercedes luxury soft-roader wins the Truck.

The Flex is nothing but a Mini Cooper on Steroids after being manhandled by Godzilla.

Ill pick the benz and hyundai for my picks for the show.

The F150 and Ram are so old and played out these days.

@GoodOldSasta: but yet it isnt... the whole thing about the mini is that its small and agile... something that the Flex is not.
