To hear them tell it, they've come to show us what real racing is about…

Yeah, there's nothing like hearing a dude with his blood type embroidered on his racing suit telling the LeMons Supreme Court why he deserves a medal for spinning out and totally averting a deadly 50-car pile-up! Granted, the Spec Miata guys aren't as difficult as the Spec E30 guys, but it's still satisfying to see that they're hooning it up just as badly at SCCA events as they are with us. Thanks to TheEastBayKid for the tip!

<![CDATA[Mazda MX-5 Superlight Says Good Morning From Frankfurt!]]> Our darling of the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show, the Mazda MX-5 Superlight, showed up wearing a stripped-down body, a cool speedster look and a huge Cheshire grin. Seriously, this little guy looks like Pokemon come to life. We love it.

The latest Miata concept strips down to the bare essentials: light weight materials, modest horsepower and mind-blowing style. The Superlight strips out pretty much everything that doesn't make the car go, turn or stop; no windshield, no top, no carpet, no nothing, only the fun stuff. Because of the lighter weight it can make do with the non-US 1.8-liter four-cylinder with 126 HP and five speed manual which is lighter than the power pack we get in the US anyway. The car tips the scales at 2,193 lbs, which ain't no spring chicken compared to a stripped out NA, but it's certainly a fair bit safer and just as capable.

MX-5 Superlight: Less is More

Inspiration
The world of automobiles and individual mobility is changing towards energy
efficiency, environmental compatibility and uncompromised safety – along with
dynamic attributes and driving fun. In its efforts to offer pure driving enjoyment, while
meeting its ecological and social responsibilities, Mazda has been focusing on weight
reduction as a core base technology. Reducing weight has always been a tradition
with the MX-5 since 20 years and it provided the inspiration for Mazda's latest show
car providing a radical expression of the cult roadster.

This year Mazda celebrates the 20th anniversary of the first MX-5 roadster, which
laid the cornerstone for its Zoom-Zoom brand philosophy – reason enough for our
designers to create a fully-drivable show car, the MX-5 Superlight version. There are
no plans to build this car, but it demonstrates how individual mobility can be
maintained in a way that uses fewer natural resources.

Mazda's European R+D centre in Oberursel has created a show car that represents
the essence of Mazda's fun-to-drive aspect. Based on the brand icon Mazda MX-5
Roadster, the MX-5 Superlight version is a pure, uncompromising two-seat sports car
meant to be affordable to just about anyone. The main challenge for the design team
in creating this study was "to evolve the MX-5, developed to perfection during the last
20 years, to a higher and extreme level," says Project Lead Designer Hasip Girgin.
The result of their efforts is a roadster show car with an exciting design that is
especially lightweight and distilled down to the very basics of sporty driving, that still
manages to provide modern safety technologies. In an increasingly digitalized world,
it creates a linear, direct bond between man and machine. Its conceptual purity
means even better driving dynamics and fuel efficiency. It accomplishes this by
keeping the vehicle below the 1000 kg threshold, a weight that was felt to be almost
unattainable for a modern sports car until now. As a study for lightweight construction
and driving enjoyment, the MX-5 Superlight version is the ideal ambassador for
Mazda's brand values.

Exterior Design
"I've dreamed of building a Mazda MX-5 with this kind of radical form for a long time,"
says Peter Birtwhistle, Mazda Motor Europe's Chief Designer, referring to the project.
"Now that weight reduction has become a dominant factor in automotive
development, the time is ripe for it. We show how lightweight a car today can be."

His design team reduced the MX-5 down to its core attributes to create a pure
roadster. Development of the production model MX-5 focussed on the bond between
driver and co-pilot to the roadster, the car's driving dynamics and its open-top
experience. The goal of the MX-5 Superlight version concept was to strengthen these
bonds even further. By doing this without a windshield, the retractable top and its
frame, designers achieved an important step in this direction. As the concept MX-5
Superlight version, the all-weather production roadster has mutated into a driving
Frankfurt Motor Show 2009 machine that lets sports car enthusiasts enjoy the natural surroundings unfiltered and
tangible. Not only does the wind blow unimpeded during driving, pilot and co-pilot can
also experience the sounds, smells and temperature changes of their immediate
surroundings. And finally, the show car's intense bond between the driver and the
technology of the vehicle gives it a unique closeness that can only be found in
stronger form in the cockpit of a race car.

Mazda designers created special roll-over bars, not only because they are very
sporty-looking, but also to contribute to aerodynamic efficiency. These also make it
clear that roll-over protection is important in this concept. And they prevent wind
turbulence around the heads of the passengers, from whom the law would require
the wearing of helmets while driving.

By removing equipment not vital to driving, and by replacing vital things with
components that support the unique concept of the vehicle, designers sharpened the
character of the MX-5 Superlight version.

Because there is no windshield, for instance, there is obviously no need for wipers.
The roadster show car's completely open design makes the need for outer door
handles, side windows and their openers unnecessary. A single, filigree aluminium,
wide-angle mirror gives a good view of the road behind. It's placed inside an
extension of the bonnet. Front and rear lights are the same as those of the
production model with additional LED lamps at the front, and brake lights at the back
of each roll-over bar, which contribute to the roadster's sporty look.

The lack of a windshield required an extension of the original aluminium bonnet into
the cabin. The attached sheet here is made of lightweight carbon fibre and provides a
hood for the dashboard frame. This also changed the proportions of the body's
design, making the front of the car longer and the passengers seem like they are
sitting further back towards the rear-drive axle, all of which is enhanced by the
massive roll-over bars and their aerodynamic cladding. The MX-5 Superlight version
translates the dramatic proportions of historical race cars into a very modern form.

Interior Design
The purity in design of the exterior also characterizes the interior design, which does
not have aesthetics as ultimate goal, but was conceived to contribute to reducing
vehicle weight. Driver and passenger of the MX-5 Superlight version are greeted by
racing bucket seats made of ultra-lightweight carbon fibre. They are slide adjustable
and upholstered with the same saddle coloured leather as the armrests, the steering
wheel, and the lightweight aluminium shift lever and hand brake. Colour-coordinated
four-point seatbelts hold the driver and passenger firmly in their seats.

The bonnet extension into the passenger cell provides a canopy for the dashboard,
which makes the dashboard look smaller than the production MX-5. Made of
lightweight plastic reinforced with fibreglass, it contains the same instruments as the
production MX-5. These are held in place by a dashboard frame made of lightweight
carbon fibre. Like a purebred race car, the MX-5 Superlight version has an ignition
button in the centre of the dashboard, along with two emergency kill buttons for
immediate fuel and electricity cut-off.

Frankfurt Motor Show 2009
Supplying air and climate control to the open passenger compartment is only
possible in limited form, so the show car has no air conditioning and no fans. Air-flow
is increased when the roadster accelerates, and only small air vents are needed. The
interior is made without any trim. Sound insulation mats and rugs do not meet the
requirements of a purist concept like this and are not used at all.

Also made of ultra-lightweight carbon fibre is the "floating-design" centre console with
iPod® adaptor and the triangular reinforcements in the trimless doors. Driver and
passenger can rest their arms here while driving.

Driving Dynamics
The Mazda MX-5 Superlight version concept is fully-drivable, but there are no plans
to produce it in the near future. Under the bonnet is the cultivated and frugal MZR
1.8-litre four-cylinder engine paired to the production roadster's five-speed manual
transmission. It develops 93 kW/126 PS of maximum power at 6,500 rpm. For an
appealing engine sound, there's a Mazdaspeed cold air intake made of polished and
powder-coated aluminium and a Mazdaspeed exhaust system, both of them specific
to the MX-5 Superlight version. These systems deliver more intake air-flow, and less
exhaust-gas back pressure. The engine sound is designed to suggest an engine with
much higher displacement than the concept actually has. During charge cycles, a
high-resonance bubbling sound in the muffler delivers the exciting sporty sound you
would expect from a very powerful engine.

The show car is designed to provide improved driving dynamics as well, and uses a
four-piston, fixed-calliper brake system with perforated discs that, because of their
size required an increase in track of 50 mm. A specially tuned chassis with a
Bilstein® B16 coil-over suspension and Eibach® stabilisers give the body of the MX-
5 Superlight version a ground clearance that is 30 mm lower than the production MX-
5. Its sporty hydraulic power-assisted rack and pinion steering system is the same as
that of the regular roadster. Its linear steering, coupled to a precise-shifting five-
speed manual transmission with short shift travel, have contributed to the character
of the world's most successful roadster for years. Also from the production model are
the roadster's 205/45 R17 original-equipment tyres and alloy wheels from the 2.0
version, which are some of the lightest on the market today at less than 8 kg.

Building the Show Car
The task sounded challenging and time was short. After the decision was made to
present a radical Mazda MX-5 Superlight version show car at the IAA in 2009, Peter
Birtwhistle had only three months to complete it. He quickly formed a five-person
team – including Hasip Girgin, Luca Zollino, Nigel Ratcliffe, Maria Greger und
Luciana Silvares – which began by designing the cockpit.

There was not enough time for small-scale modelling. The designers put their ideas
to paper, decided which were best, then modelled these directly onto a full-scale clay
model. The cockpit was created together with the interior door braces. All
components were then digitalized. This data was sent to an external studio for
prototype build, where the parts of fibreglass-reinforced plastic and carbon fibre were
made and later fitted. This method was also used to create the centre console with
gear shift lever and hand brake.

Parallel to this, a production MX-5 Roadster with an MZR 1.8-litre powertrain was
stripped of all components that would later be replaced. Under the leadership of
Mazda's design team and chassis engineers, a drivable "blank" of the MX-5
Superlight version was created that weighed well under 1,000 kg, while respecting
the original roadster's ideal 50/50 weight distribution. Mazda test drivers then drove
the roadster around a closed track with experts from Bilstein® and Eibach®, in order
to ascertain the feasibility of the project. The results amazed even the most
experienced engineers: with hardly any re-working, the "light" MX-5 version was an
easy-to-control, safe-driving roadster that displayed agility, great driving dynamics
and acoustical appeal.

Final assembly began with painting the body in white colour, and simply polishing the
original MX-5 aluminium bonnet. Then the racing seats, steering wheel, gear shift
lever and hand brake were upholstered in leather and installed in the show car. This
was followed by the installation of all previously-built carbon fibre components. And
at the end, Mazda designers installed the centre console, the dashboard and
instruments, seatbelts and roll-over bars.

Frankfurt Motor Show 2009
Weight Saving Measures in Detail
Less is more! This was the formal process that Mazda designers followed when
building the MX-5 Lightweight Version at Mazda R+D studios in Oberursel, Germany.
All components that were not absolutely required for driving were put on the scales.
Safety components were left untouched. Weight savings, by either elimination or
replacement, were undertaken on the following components:

• Windshield with frame and wipers
• Retractable soft top and folding frame
• Side windows including window openers
• Outer door handles and side mirrors
• Audio system
• Interior trim, rugs and sound insulation
• Production-model seats
• Air conditioning system, heat exchanger and ventilation system
• Dashboard frame
• Centre console
• Gear shift lever
• Hand brake lever
• Armrest between the seats

History of Mazda MX Concept Cars
The MX-5 has benefited from different concept cars through its 20 years history. In
2000, Mazda's American design studio created the Miata Mono-Posto Concept for
the SEMA show. An earlier step in the direction of a more radical MX-5 was taken by
Mazdaspeed in Japan, which created the Roadster MPS Concept in 2001. This idea
was reinterpreted in 2004 with the Mazda Roadster Coupe TS Concept, which had a
classic Italian coupe shape based on the roadster.

And finally, in 2003 the design study Mazda Ibuki was built that hinted at the third-
generation MX-5, which was launched two years later. Not only did Mazda Ibuki have
extremely small overhangs and the more austere design language of the later
production model, it also anticipated some major conceptual changes. For instance,
the drive assembly of the concept was positioned lower and further toward the middle
of the vehicle, for a lower centre of gravity and an equal weight distribution over both
axles. The production car that appeared later would boast an ideal 50:50 weight
distribution front and rear, and deliver excellent handling attributes.

<![CDATA[More Mazda MX-5 Superlight Concept: 2,193 Lbs Of Stripped-Out Awesome]]> We practically fell over in spasms of awesome-induced joy when we saw the first renderings of the Mazda MX-5 Superlight Concept. Now we've got a whole slew of photos of the 995 Kg stripped-down, carbon fiber and cold-filtered sports car.

So Mazda decided to blow our minds by transforming the fun Mazda Miata into an awesome, purpose-built, speedster in the form of the MX-5 Superlight Concept. It'll debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show, and when it does, it'll show off one of the purest interpretations of the car in the nameplate's history. What takes the Superlight from "pretty neat" to "spectacularly unbelievable" is the detailing. Instead of just taking bits off, it's what Mazda added in terms of attention to detail which makes it so cool. The roll hoops have integrated high mount brake lights. The carbon fiber dash elements hold real toggle switches — even the shift knob's been sliced down to reduce weight but boasts better styling. Forget the other supercars debuting at Frankfurt, we want the Miata. Be sure to check out the massive 54 image gallery and until we get complete details, satisfy yourself with the bare specs:

<![CDATA[Ten Cars To Drive Across The U.S.A.]]> When we drove from Manhattan to Detroit's Woodward Dream Cruise, it got us thinking about the Holy Grail of American road trips: all the way across the country. It has to be done, but behind the wheel of what?

Not what we drove, believe us. We had a great time at the Dream Cruise, but we didn't have a really great time getting there (or back!) because we drove Bumblebee/Phyllis/Edith, our bright yellow Camaro, and frankly most muscle cars are hell for long trips. Once we got back, dropped Phyllis/Edith/Optimus McBumblebee off, and cabbed it home, we realized the cabs were by far the comfiest yellow cars we'd ridden in all weekend. Which explains our first choice:

Chevy Caprice-or really any big American body-on-frame sedan

Occupants: Up to four down-to-earth friends with extensive cassette-tape collections

Attitude: Relaxed, with ample stops for gas-station souvenirs

Slouchy comfort is the strong suit here. You get big bench seats fore and aft to stretch out on, a sort of floaty wallowy comfort, and a huge trunk for storing enormous 256-ounce collector's drink mugs, petting-zoo T-shirts and silver naked-lady silhouettes. It's unquestionably American without being a grandiose flag-waving statement, and some of them are still mistaken for cop cars in many regions. A great car to use when the trip matters more than the destination, but the drive matters less than the trip, if you will.

Volkswagen Camper Van

Occupants: Two in comfort, but up to four with increasing probability of hippies occurring

Attitude: Face-first and wide-eyed into the eternal now of the North American continent, or other such pseudopoetics

The VW van is really a very serviceable little automobile, within its limits, but those limits are defined as much by metaphysics as physics. Something about its ambling rate of progress, its right-up-front driving position, and of course its heritage, all combine to make this car a spiritual pitfall. People have been known to become cut-rate Ken Keseys after a week traveling in one of these, which is too bad. They really are pleasant and functional little things to putt around in, if your tie-dye inoculation is up to date.

Mercedes E-Class Wagon

Occupants: Married couple with 2.4 kids

Attitude: Don't Make Me Turn This Thing Around, You Spoiled Ungrateful Brats

The point here isn't Mercedes style or quality or comfort or any of that, though it's nice to have those conveniences and comforts as possible on a family vacation. Any wagon would work just fine here as long as it had, as the Merc does, the rear-facing bench seats for the wee 'uns. The backwards bench is plain awesome to ride in when you're a certain age (roughly 7-65) and your mean dad won't stop at the petting zoo. It's also a good barometer for judging the behavior of your little darlings. Just belt them in, give them some juice, and set out for the other coast. If a Peterbilt rear-ends you and kills you all stone dead, your children were hellions who have learned to give The Finger. If not, they're probably pretty good kids.

Mazda Miata

Occupants: One thoughtful loner or two people who are deeply and genuinely in love and have good nonverbal communications skills

Attitude: "I am just going outside and may be some time"

This is really the only hairshirt option on this list. Usually we love the Miata because of its balance and handling, but if you're the sort who can travel with a single big duffle bag and you're not limiting yourself to Interstates, the Miata is a brilliant tourer. The seats are good for moderately long stints, there's just enough weight that you don't get buffeted by trucks, and you can put speakers in the headrests so your music is audible over the wind noise, mostly. Believe us, driving through the mountains in a nimble convertible with the top down feels transcendent, like getting away with something. Of course, you'll become really familiar with American wheelcovers, and driving through a thunderstorm with the top up feels like spiralling down the Norway maelstrom in a tent, so there are tradeoffs.

Ford Bronco

Occupants: 1-3, plus huge dog with bandanna around its neck (not optional)

Attitude: Roads are nice, but not really necessary

Who wouldn't love a good old Bronc? It's the perfect cross-county ride for people who take the phrase literally. Plus you sit up nice and high, so you can see over bridge railings and the like, and you can roll the rear window down and feel rugged and raffish. And everyone loves them so you'll instantly make friends with the locals, especially when you stop to take snapshots of the petting zoo and your huge dog with the bandanna around its neck jumps out.

Infiniti FX35

Occupants: Up to four adults with luggage or two with a darling credenza

Attitude: Before we leave, make sure all the NPR stations are pre-programmed in

There are some people who simply must have an SUV, so if you must, take this. It has the ride height to give you good views, it drives more or less like a car, it returns fair fuel economy, and it can even carry a few tasteful pieces back, for those who are too button-down for kitschy road-trip crap but aren't above a bit of modest antiquing. Just don't bring kids, who tend to leave unsightly smudges on the glass as you drone right past waterparks and petting zoos and giant roadside dinosaurs. Come to think, don't bring us either.

Cadillac Sedan DeVille, 1994-1999 models

Occupants: One.

Attitude: Stern, plus must be starting in upper Pacific Northwest, Upper Midwest, or Upper Northeast, and be heading for Florida

This is a seriously comfy car: good leather, nicely done LED lights, arctic air conditioning, very smooth Northstar V8. God alone knows why they stopped making it, but it's no surprise because there hasn't been a sane day in this country since Eisenhower. Ashtray's really too small for the cigars, but that's why Christ created power windows. Damn if Rush doesn't sound like he's right in the car with you, and the music would sound okay too if it all didn't sound like some loon bangin' on a can anymore. How many more miles to Fort Lauderdale?

Converted School Bus

Occupants: Up to 30, but who's counting?

Attitude: Either "Taking a year off to see a game in every great American ballpark" or "If it's really and truly terminal, this is better than a hospital bed."

Sometimes a transcontinental journey is both a specific goal and a way to say To Hell With Everything. In those cases, see of your local school district has a Bluebird they're not planning on using and go to town with whatever tools and batty ideas you have lying around. The example in our photo is a bit extreme, but you don't have to have a camper van welded to the top. Cutting off the roof aft of the wheel humps to make a porch works, as does adding alfresco seating in the middle section, as is installing a hang-glider launch ramp on the roof. Once you finally trundle it out there, just don't be in a hurry. Be willing to let "across the nation" become "around the nation." And watch for hippies.

Acura NSX

Occupants: 1-2

Attitude: Understated, underappreciated, and well over the speed limit.

There may be better and faster grand-touring cars, but we just love this thing. Honda couldn't convince people their exotic really was an exotic, but we get it. Most know its reputation as a very balanced car, even with "only" 300 horsepower-less than the FX35. But it's also a supremely comfortable car, with some of the all-time great seats. It'll only hold two carry-ons in its "trunk," but you're not going camping in an NSX; have the coincierge send your clothes out to be cleaned and pressed while you take dinner. If we were to make a serious attempt at a fast but sane personal transcontinental record, this car would be hard to pass up.

Mustang GT

Occupants: 1-3

Attitude: One man drives while the other men scream

We repeat: Muscle cars are terrible long-distance transportation. But if we had to pick one, it'd be the Mustang GT, with its combination of good outward visibility, ride quality, driver comfort, and survivable back seat room. If you have to play Third Cylon in a muscle car, as we did on our recent Detroit trip, this is the muscle car to do it in. But seriously, after the first gas stop, you'll be thinking about trading it in on a nice '94 Sedan DeVille.

But whatever you go in, go! We've given you the best states to drive across, discussed the worst, and now a list of vehicles and ideas. Now get out there on the road and make our country a great destination again. Those petting-zoo animals ain't gonna pet themselves!

<![CDATA[2009 Mazda MX-5 Miata: Celebrating 20 Years With A Chi-Town Party]]> The 2009 Mazda MX-5 Miata will celebrate its 20-year anniversary, making a North American debut at next month's Chicago Auto Show.

2009 MAZDA MX-5 TO MAKE NORTH AMERICAN DEBUT AT CHICAGO AUTO SHOW - WORLD’S BEST-SELLING TWO-SEAT ROADSTER CELEBRATES 20 YEARS

IRVINE, Calif. - Mazda's timeless roadster, the MX-5 Miata, races into the 2009 Chicago Auto Show with a refreshed exterior, enhanced performance and improved fuel efficiency. Mazda will showcase the 2009 MX-5 along with a historical collection of early model-year Miatas and the all-new 2010 MAZDA3 four-door sedan and five-door models.

Launched in 1989 as a 1990 model, the MX-5 Miata was conceived as a small two-seat roadster that was spirited, fun-to-drive and unlike anything else available at the time. Since then, competitors have come and gone, but none have lasted. Twenty years later, and with more than 800,000 models sold so far around the world, the MX-5 Miata is the world's best-selling two-seat roadster.

"The MX-5 Miata has been true to Mazda's Zoom-Zoom philosophy since rolling off the assembly line 20 years ago," said Tim Barnes, director, Product Development. "Long before Zoom-Zoom became one of the most recognizable slogans around, Mazda designed Miata to epitomize the 'emotion of motion' concept on which Zoom-Zoom is based, and our worldwide sales are a real testament to Miata's DNA and spirit."

The 2009 MX-5 produces 167-hp from a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. Perfect balance has always been a hallmark of the car, and the new model's suspension revisions make it an even better mountain road dance partner. In addition, updates to front and rear fascias, interior enhancements, package changes and new interior and exterior colors keep MX-5 as fresh today as it was 20 years ago.

On display alongside the MX-5 will be the all-new MAZDA3. Aimed at the young at heart, who love to drive and are technologically aware, the MAZDA3 remains the most engaging car in its class. Both the four-door and five-door versions feature top-class environmental and safety performance, and offer evolved sporty driving dynamics, eye-catching styling elements and a high-quality interior.

The all-new MAZDA3 is available with key features typically not seen in its class including:

* Bluetooth hands-free phone and audio
* Adaptive Front-lighting System and Bi-Xenon headlights with auto leveling
* Advanced keyless entry system
* Push-button start

One of every three Mazdas sold worldwide is a MAZDA3. That success drove the production of the two-millionth MAZDA3 in October 2008. The all-new 2010 MAZDA3 will go on sale in North America in the first quarter of 2009.

The balance of Mazda's full 2009 lineup also will be on display at the show, including CX-9, CX-7, MAZDA5, RX-8, Tribute and the all-new 2009 MAZDA6 sports sedan. The Chicago Auto Show is open to the public February 13-22, 2009, at the McCormick Place, Chicago.

Headquartered in Irvine, Calif., Mazda North American Operations oversees the sales, marketing, parts and customer service support of Mazda vehicles in the United States, Canada and Mexico through nearly 900 dealers. Operations in Canada are managed by Mazda Canada, Inc., located in Ontario, Canada, and in Mexico by Mazda Motor de Mexico in Mexico City.

<![CDATA[2009 Mazda Miata MX-5 Launched In Japan]]> Mazda has finally released photos of their refreshed 2009 Mazda Miata MX-5 for the JDM, and the evolutionary changes appear to be a pleasing enough.

This refresh adds a dash of nagare spice to a design considered too conservative for an already understated car. The car will be powered by the same 2.0-liter fourbanger, though with a few revisions that will stretch the rev limit to 7,500 rpm from 7,000 rpm. A five-speed manual is only available in the soft-top model while the retractable hard-top version will get either a six-speed manual or automanual.

Prices in Japan start at $25,000 for the soft-top and $28,900 for the folding hard top. Full details in the press release below. Look for most of this design, if not the price, to make it into the US version.

Mazda Launches Freshened Roadster in Japan

HIROSHIMA, Japan—Mazda Motor Corporation today announced the launch of the freshened Mazda Roadster (known as the MX-5 overseas) into the Japanese market. Mazda’s updated iconic lightweight, open-top sports car goes on sale today (December 9, 2008) at all Mazda and Mazda Anfini dealers throughout Japan. Manufacturer’s suggested retail prices (including consumption tax) range from 2,330,000 to 2,600,000 yen for the soft top models, and from 2,680,000 to 2,950,000 yen for the Power Retractable Hard Top (RHT) models that feature Mazda’s groundbreaking electric roof system.

The latest version of Mazda’s two-seat sports car carries forward the Roadster’s traditional “Jinba Ittai” (“rider and horse as one”) concept, and features detailed improvements in the exterior and interior design, quality, functionality and dynamic performance. As a result, the Roadster is now more fun-to-drive and more desirable than ever. The RHT models, which provide both the enjoyment of open-top driving and the comfort of a coupe, are now even quieter and feature new, exclusive exterior parts, offering customers even higher levels of comfort and quality.

The design of the front fascia has been updated with Mazda’s hallmark five-point grille. A stronger character line that stretches along the lower edge of the vehicle’s sides has been visually extended to the rear bumper, further enhancing the Roadster’s sporty dynamism. Newly designed alloy wheels (two sizes) now come as standard on all model grades. Three new exterior body colors have been added, including the high quality Aluminum Metallic and vivid Sunflower Yellow.

On the inside, the five gauges on the instrument panel have been newly designed and are highlighted by a dark silver decorative panel. The interior quality is enhanced by a choice of tactile brown leather seats or Recaro bucket seats upholstered in a combination of leather and Alcantara®*1. Comfort levels are also improved through the addition of heated seats with a temperature control with five temperature settings (for grades with leather seats only).

The rev limit on grades with a manual transmission has been increased to 7,500 rpm for improved driving performance. The height of the front roll center has been optimized, and the retuned suspension makes the vehicle’s handling even more natural. Additionally, automatic grades now offer Direct Mode*2 and Active Adaptive Shift (AAS)*3 functions for an even sportier ride. Improvements have also been made to the engine and body to enhance noise reduction levels and provide a more satisfying engine sound.

The Mazda Roadster was certified by Guinness World Records as the world’s highest production two-seat open-top sports car when production passed 500,000 units in 2000. Guinness has updated the Roadster’s record since then, which now stands at over 800,000 units built.

Main features of the refreshed Mazda Roadster

Exterior
The freshened Roadster carries forward the simple elegance and familiar styling of previous Roadsters, yet incorporates Mazda’s latest design motifs.
- The front fascia now features Mazda’s hallmark five-pointed grille. Sharper headlights and bold fog light bezels enhance the lively and refined styling. This further emphasizes the curved corners of the front bumper, which also improves the vehicle aerodynamics.
- More prominent character lines running along the bottom of the vehicle sides strengthen the appearance of the side sill garnish. The character lines have been visually extended to the rear bumper to better express speed and stability.
- The rear end has been updated with new rear combination lights that flow smoothly into the bumper. A larger black rear diffuser further emphasizes the Roadster’s sporty appearance.
- RHT models feature an exclusive mesh grille with a chrome border, chrome headlight inner bezels, silver fog light inner bezels and chrome outer door handles. A high-mounted clear brake light completes the RHT’s distinctive and high quality look.
- All models come with newly designed alloy wheels as standard equipment. The five-spoke 16-inch wheels complement the Roadster’s lightweight image (on the S, NR-A, S RHT and VS RHT model grades). The 17-inch wheels feature 10 rounded spokes for a more dynamic appearance (on the RS and RS RHT model grades). Additionally, forged 17-inch alloy wheels, customized by BBS, are available as a factory-installed option (on the RS, RS RHT and VS RHT grades).
- Eight exterior body colors are available, including three new options: deep Metropolitan Gray Mica, high quality Aluminum Metallic, and Sunflower Yellow, which expresses the Roadster’s Zoom-Zoom spirit.

Interior
The interior design of the freshened Mazda Roadster offers improved quality and functionality in every detail, while the snug cabin conveys a sense of openness.
- A sporty, dark silver decorative panel runs across the center of the dashboard. Silver rings have been added to the air conditioner dials on the center panel to raise the interior quality feel.
- The five gauges on the instrument cluster have been newly designed to make them easier to read. A red LCD screen is located in the center of the meter console. It displays data from the odometer/trip meter, as well as the average fuel consumption and ambient air temperature.
- The design of the inner door pocket has been flattened to increase space in the foot well. Soft padding has been added to the lid on the center console storage box and the door armrests to increase comfort levels.
- The newly designed seats come in four grades. Sporty black fabric seats are available for all grades except the VS RHT. The VS RHT features tactile, Havana Brown leather upholstery as standard equipment. Black leather seat covers (for the RS and the RS RHT grades) and RECARO bucket seats upholstered in a combination of black leather and Alcantara® (for the RS, RS RHT and VS RHT grades) are available as factory-installed options.
- The seats have larger side bolsters for greater support. For added comfort, heated seats with a five-setting temperature control are standard for the VS RHT and available for the RS and RS RHT grades as a factory-installed option.
- A BOSE® sound system, developed exclusively for the Roadster, features a six-channel digital amplifier and seven speakers with independent playback. The system also features AUDIOPILOTTM 2, a BOSE® noise compensation system (available as a factory-installed option on all grades except NR-A).
- An auxiliary jack that is located at the base of the center stack provides connectivity for portable audio devices (standard on the VS RHT and available as a factory-installed option on all other grades except the NR-A).

Driving performance
By reviewing and evolving the basic aspects of the vehicle’s dynamics, such as acceleration, cornering, and braking, Mazda further enhanced the “Jinba Ittai” (“rider and horse as one”) feel that the Roadster has become famous for since the original version was introduced.

Powertrains
- The 2.0-liter double overhead cam (DOHC) engine features a newly forged crankshaft for extra strength. Additionally, new full floating piston pins and revised valve springs raise the engine’s overall operational precision. Maximum output is now generated at 7,000 rpm, up from 6,700 rpm, and the rev limit has been increased from 7,000 to 7,500 rpm. These changes result in a stretched power band at higher engine speeds (for manual transmission models).
- The highly rigid forged crankshaft, together with a stiffer plastic surge tank, contributes to improved quietness when cruising. At the same time, these changes bring out a clearer sound when driving at medium to high speeds. Six-speed manual transmission models also feature a newly developed Induction Sound Enhancer. This amplifies the throbbing noise generated as air is sucked into the engine and reverberates it around the cabin for an even better driving experience.
- The updated six-speed manual transmission provides an even smoother shift feel thanks to the carbon-coated meshing surfaces on the first to fourth triple-cone synchronizers and a larger diameter third to fourth synchronizer.
- The electrically-controlled six-speed automatic (Activematic) transmission now has a “Direct mode” and Active Adoptive Shift (AAS) which enhance the sporty driving experience and provide better response to driver inputs.

Body and chassis
- By lowering the front roll center height by 26 mm, the added vertical load on the outer wheels when cornering is minimized. This results in a more natural amount of body roll when cornering and more linear response to steering inputs. With added improvements to the suspension, the updated Roadster offers improved “Jinba Ittai” handling balanced with a higher quality ride.
- The protruding design of the front bumper corners and the rear combination lights, together with wider front under-floor tire deflectors, contribute to improved aerodynamics.

Quietness
The door modules are made from a stiffer new material and feature a reinforcement rib for extra rigidity. Together with a stronger number two crossmember, these changes make sound insulation better than ever. For RHT models, road noise is further reduced due to the addition of urethane foam filling in the front suspension crossmember and extra sound insulation in the roof.

Environmental and safety features
Mazda evolved the eco-friendly and safety features of the Mazda Roadster to increase its fun-to-drive qualities.
- All models qualify as Super-Ultra-Low Emission Vehicles (SU-LEV) by achieving exhaust emissions that are at least 75% lower than the levels required by the Japanese government’s 2005 exhaust emissions standard.
- A display on the instrument panel shows the average fuel consumption and ambient temperature.
- The Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) system supports linear and confident driving by helping to prevent loss of control when cornering (standard equipment on the RS, RS RHT, and VS RHT grades).
- The Roadster offers excellent collision safety performance thanks to a version of Mazda’s highly rigid Advanced Impact-energy Distribution and Absorption System that has been specially adapted for an open-top car. Other safety equipment to mitigate potential injuries to occupants and pedestrians includes an airbag system and a bonnet with Mazda’s shock cone structure.

<![CDATA[The NASA 25 Hours Of Thunderhill Overload Gallery]]> As we know, nobody was shocked to see Mazdas dominate at the 25 Hours Of Thunderhill over the weekend (go here for the results page), but it wasn't a Mazda-only deal by any means. Mustangs, Golfs, 911s, M3s, a lone Scion, and many others were in action as well, and you can check 'em all out by making the jump!

<![CDATA[Mazdaspeed MX-5 Takes Overall NASA 25 Hours Win, Evil Genius Miata Wins E2 Class]]> I'm paying the price for going up to Thunderhill yesterday (and officiating at the first-ever LeMons Scavenger Hunt today) while still reeling from the 1918 Flu, so I'm unable to slog through all the race photos and give you a nice gallery today (you can rely on our friend Señor Lavrinc to provide some excellent coverage). Instead, the breaking news: the overall lap winner of the NASA 25 Hours Of Thunderhill was the #19 Mazda MX-5, run by- you guessed it- Mazdaspeed! The E2 class trophy will be riding home with our pals from Evil Genius Racing, who piloted their #64 Miata to a best-in-class win. Check in tomorrow for some 25 Hours gallery action!

<![CDATA[2010 Mazda MX-5 Miata High-Res Photos Leak]]> There’s leaks and then there’s leaks. This is the latter kind. Check out the photo gallery of 2010 Mazda MX-5 Miata press shots below — you can see it from every different angle, inside and out. Apparent are the new, less appliance-like headlights, revised taillights and unmodified interior. No other details are available, but expect the same 166 HP 2.0-liter engine and uncorrupted driving experience.

<![CDATA[2010 Mazda MX-5 Facelift Official Photo Leaks]]> The folks over at Spanish site KM77 have gotten ahold of the first official photo of the facelifted 2010 Mazda MX-5. Confirming what we saw with the EU patent images, this is truly just a facelift. The Mazda Kazamai-esque nose is fully on display along with a few other obvious visual tweaks.

<![CDATA[2012 Mazda MX-5 To Get Radical Refresh Says Mazda Design Boss]]> Though recently leaked patent renderings for the 2010 Mazda MX-5 reveal a fairly conservative refresh, designers and engineers are working on a radical change for the next all-new version of the Miata. In an interview with Autocar, Lauren Van den Acker, design boss for Mazda, comes right out and says the next all new Miata is going to make waves. Apparently the company is in a hot debate at the moment over the direction of the iconic roadster, but one thing is certain: Mazda intends to push the envelope.

The fourth generation MX-5 is expected to show its face in around 2012, but what will that face look like? Van den Acker hints the design is actually moving towards an application of the Nagare design language as seen on the Mazda Kazamai concept they've been showing lately. As one of the worlds few remaining compact roadsters, legions of Miataphiles will be eager to see just how the sweeping lines and flowing curves of Nagare will attach to the shape of their little corner carver. <![CDATA[The Ten Most Gorgeous Japanese Cars Currently For Sale]]> They said it couldn't be done. They said compiling a list of ten gorgeous Japanese cars currently for sale was a fool's errand. What they didn't know was that in Japan the cars aren't designed to be as purposeful and uncharismatic as many of their American offerings. In fact, half of the cars on the list are not sold in the United States. And while no cars from the land of the rising sun made it onto our Ten Most Beautiful Cars list, it was easier than we thought to find these ten most gorgeous Japanese cars.

10. Nissan GT-R

It's not hard to appreciate the 2009 Nissan GT-R. Unlike almost anything on the road, this latest iteration of the famous Japanese supercar not only outperforms many of its pricier competitors, it also offers a look that's both familiar and fresh. The aggressive front and strong profile makes no secret of the GT-R's ability.

9. Mitsuoka Galue Convertible

Whereas the strange-in-the-wrong-way Orochi from Mitsuoka may be one of the ugliest cars in the world, the Mitsuoka Galue Convertible is very much strange in the right way. Based on the current-generation Ford Mustang, the carriagemakers at Mitsuoka have crafted on the front from a Rolls Royce and the rear from a CTS. It's strange, but we can't help but love it. [Photo Credit: Carscoop]

8. Nissan Teana

While the current Nissan Altima isn't unattractive, the car's Japanese cousin is downright becoming. The sedan's elongated proportions and sweeping lines are distinctly European, while the sharp headlights and large grille are particularly Nissan. Let's hope this is the direction they're going to take American Nissans sometime soon.

7. Honda S2000 Type S

As much as we like the base Honda S2000, the S2000 Type S takes the modest and becoming sports car and adds a dash of Super Potential to the equation. Though some may fault it for its large wing and aggressive ground effects, these bits not only add aerodynamic function to the S2000, they also add much needed teeth. If you've got a hankering for one, the Honda S2000 CR is fairly similar.

6. Mazda RX-8

A minor refresh this year hasn't changed the fact that the Mazda RX-8 design is getting a bit long in the tooth. Nevertheless, the RX-8 is still a head-turner. A mixture of rotary-inspired shapes and exotic details, it's a car that only Mazda could design. One of the best-looking rear 3/4 views of any GT, we're glad those rad rotarians finally added a front to match with the 2009 RX-8.

5. Daihatsu Copen

One of the favorites among Kei Car enthusiasts, the tiny Copen from Daihatsu may not be the most powerful car on the list (in fact, it's the least powerful) but it's undeniably the cutest. In the tradition of tiny roadsters, the Copen looks like something fun a British company like MG would build if British carmakers like MG weren't all owned by the Chinese and Indians. It's proof that good things do sometimes come in small packages.

4. Toyota Century

A love for the Toyota Century is a love for a car that personifies understated luxury. Way understated. The only front-engined, RWD Japanese car to get V12 power, the Century has only been redesigned twice in the last 40 years of its production. Thought it costs nearly $100,000, it doesn't have the "Look at me, look at me!" cues of a Lexus, Mercedes or Bentley. Tasteful and reserved, the Century is the luxury car of the cunning diplomat. [Photo Credit: Yehey Forums]

3. Mazda MX-5 (Miata)

In addition to being a competitive LeMons racer, the MX-5 has historically been a low-key but sleek roadster, and the latest iteration is no different. The slightly flared fenders, rounded surfaces and low profile are timeless and beautiful.

2. Toyota Mark X

One of the best looking sedans that few people have ever heard of, the sleek Toyota Mark X may be related to the American Lexus GS300 but in a way that makes us think one of the two was secretly adopted. This RWD sedan has the shapely curves of an E-Class Mercedes combined with the sloping and textured nose of an Alfa (sans the crest) and that wonderful disregard for subtlety that makes us love Japanese cars.

1. Infiniti G37

The Infiniti G37 is a coupe that just missed getting placed on our most beautiful cars list. A drastic improvement over the previous generation, the G37 practically sparkles in person. Unlike most Japanese luxury cars, the sculptors of the G37 took chances with the design. The gently raked beltline and 1980s-professional-woman wide shoulders balance the feminine and the masculine like few modern cars can. But it's the details, like the 10-spoked wheels and creased grille, that make this otherwise toned-down coupe scream.

<![CDATA[2010 Mazda MX-5 Renderings Leaked By EU Patent Office]]> Someone at the Office of Harmonization for the Internal Market, the EU agency responsible for registering trademarks, screwed up and let lose a series of photos of the facelifted replacement for the current generation Mazda MX-5. These renderings clearly show a few important design tweaks for the 2010 Mazda MX-5. Similar to the Mazda Kazamai, the new front bumper includes more angular details, a strong contrast to those on the smooth and round current generation.

Though the grille includes a more RX-8-esque rotary shape, this design seems to be more of an indicator of what we can expect from the 2010 Mazda3. Actually, it's not that dissimilar from the Mazda3 concept that turned out to be a Photoshop, indicating that Mazda is following closely the design language they established. [AutoWeek.nl]

<![CDATA[Mazdaspeed MX-5 A No-Go]]> Autoblog reported this weekend Mazda's put the kibosh on rumors of a Mazdaspeed version of the MX-5. Speculation was rampant the turbo 2.3-liter Mazdaspeed3 engine would end up under the hood of the MX-5, but apparently the fuel pump design makes the swap from transverse to longitudinal mounting prohibitively expensive. So what's a forced-induction fan with an MX-5 to do?

How about give the aftermarket a few months and work on paying down those credit card balances. Mazdaspeed can supply a full array of suspension and engine upgrades, while Cosworth has their supercharger — said to provide 210 HP to the rear wheels — on the test bench as we type. Additionally, Flyin' Miata claims they'll have a centrifugal blower ready for action soon, hopefully by the holidays. [Mazda via Autoblog]

<![CDATA[Miata Owner Gets Bored, Swaps In Jaguar V12]]> If you think a V8 in a Miata is an ambitious swap, just check out this guy's project. Yes, that's a 5.3-liter Jaguar V12, and if that wasn't enough, its fuel-injection system has been replaced with a project-car hell-worthy six-carburetor intake! Just listen to that baby purr.

OK, well, you would be able to listen to it purr if it actually stayed running. But isn't that why we take on projects like this, just to suffer the pain of anticipation? We can't wait 'till he gets it out on the street. Sure it may not be as powerful or reliable as a well-built Ford V8, but who cares? It's a V12!

<![CDATA[Jalopnik Holiday Gift Guide: Skip Barber Racing School]]> Though slightly more expensive than most of the gifts making our annual "Holiday Gift Guide," a trip to the Skip Barber Racing School is kind of a dream gift. Whether it's just one day of hoonage in a formula 2.0 or a full three days of whipping an MX-5 around Road America, you'll make your significant other forget that time you let their pet rabbit Mr. Pilkington get away.

There are currently five major locations (Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, Road Atlanta, Road America, Sebring International Raceway and Lime Rock) serving your driving needs, as well as satellite schools. They're offering gift certificates at a discount for the holidays, so now is a good time to buy. Discounted prices range from $495 for the Introduction to Racing course all the way up to $3,795 for the Mazda MX-5 Cup Racing School. You can read about Mr. Lieberman's good times at the Two-Day High Performance Driving School, which is a pretty good gift for the car nut with no real racing intentions at just $2,795.

The "exhilaration of the open-top" and the "practicality of a coupe" were the two fun aspects that were designed into the Roadster Power Retractable Hard Top. Chrome parts highlight the premium styling, while glass flakes blended into the purple body color accent the charming atmosphere. Inside, red Italian leather and Alcantara* make up the mature color scheme. The KURENAI is a chic open-style customized model perfect for passionate people.

* A suede-like artificial leather made by Torex. The Japanese name is Ecsaine

16. Mazda Premacy Bright Stylish M'z Style (planned production model)
Under the 'Cool Style Minivan' concept, the base model Premacy was customized with a view to raising its stylish presence. The front bumper and grille are outfitted with a chrome kit, while the rear styling is focused on a unified flow emphasized by the rear underskirt. A more resonant exhaust note—attained by fitting an exclusive sports muffler—emphasizes the unique presence of the Premacy Bright Stylish Concept.

17. Mazda Verisa Sherwood Knight (concept model)
Among the Mazda Verisa's high-quality and stylish features, maturity and elegance are particularly emphasized in this model. Special body color, Highland Green Mica and an original front-grille bumper enhance the styling that renders a nostalgic feel. The leather seats, a combination of sand beige and black, provide a fresh contrast to heighten the refined and exclusive interior atmosphere.
