I remember when Autoblog had a +/- voting system for comments, and if enough people + clicked you, you would become "highly ranked" or "highest ranked" instead of "neutral". That was sort of cool, since you could get a general feel for people's thoughts on any given comment, but given the amount of interaction we have in the comments on Jalopnik, we don't really need it to get people to voice their opinions.

It seems to be sort of hit and miss whether they start playing or not. The two videos in this thread do for me, but other commenters have linked to videos in other posts and they seem to be acting normally and only playing when you click on them. I think I might just keep a Firefox tab open for this thread until Nibbles sorts the autoplaying stuff out.

pj, I'm actually totally straight. I'm very open-minded and have tried a lot of stuff, but have figured out by now what does it for me or not. That doesn't prevent me from appreciating something remarkable, though, and beautiful bodies, whether male or female, definitely fall into that category. Besides, I know you guys enjoy it ;)

I came to understand, that pretty much everyone on Gawker's main site is a friggin star-commenter. The rest was thoroughly ignored, pretty much. Especially with their concerns.
Mr. Denton, while addressing most technical issues, ignore more of the philosophical ones, with the exception of the following statement: "That's more or less it. We let the comments get out of hand -- the audience is about five times the size it was when we first launched comments. We want to showcase the smarter comments -- but without creating a static caste of elite commenters. Hence the ease with which a smart comment can be promoted to the front of a post. "
Personally, I feel he failed pretty bad at not creating static caste of elite commenters, especially after he created a system for caste of elite commenters.
We didn't have any elites before, because we treated everyone equal.
Now we're hiding away those "nor worthy" and I can't for the life of me see that actually making this place better.
Screw this shit. I don't appreciate being treated as a second class visitor while some elitists with stars get all the attention. Most star commenters I have read don't say anything worthy of privledges. Most of the really good comments come from the now second class user. So if you want to bury those and have the elitist comments prominent, don't be surprised if the site traffic drops.
With that, I say kiss off. I'll take my traffic and comments to another gaming blog where everyone's comments are displayed equally be default, without any segregationist bullshit class system in place.

Maybe, just maybe, Gawker could treat all comments equally but let us stars demote comments? We know a troll when we see one.
However, going to another blog? Have you been to any of them Weblog sites lately? No auditioning and free registration and commenting makes for some chaos.

Yes, I went and watched the dominator video... and then I felt like an idiot. Having read that article and seeing that the vid was from the company's website I thought it was privately produced. I didn't realize that it was actually from Storm Chasers on Discovery... But now nobody can read my comment, 4 months later, about the dominator being in a TV show. That's why I normally don't comment on articles with videos.

My car is actually perfectly drivable, but makes me nervous because the hood is a bit crumpled in front and looks like it'll fly open when I'm driving on the freeway. I'm getting it repaired for primarily cosmetic reasons, but also just for peace of mind. That car has been so damn good to me over the few years I've owned it, and I hate it looking abused.
Glad you liked the Porsche video! My own reaction was much like Mobius': I thought it was incredible... until the Panamera showed up. LOL.
My fingers get all dyslexic when I try to type Pamanera. Whoops, see, there I go!

Speaking of aluminum, that's what my hood is made out of (that's how Miatas are so freaking light), and a replacement OEM one would be about $700 before shipping. They are also incredibly fragile, so I would need to have some crazy insurance on it to make sure it arrived intact. I could also buy a steel aftermarket one, but that would be much heavier and would still be about $350-400 minimum. I am probably going to be a cheapskate (read: student) and get a hail-damaged OEM hood from someone local on Craigslist for $150-200 instead. I should have all the parts, hood included, within the next week or so, so my baby will be back on the road looking fine in about two weeks! :D

I know some people who live near Lawrence, any my father worked for the C&NW Railroad for over 30-years, before they were purchased by the UP.
This happened in January of 2008
Union Pacific spokesman Mark Davis said no one was injured when one locomotive and 12 freight cars derailed Monday around 4 p.m. in Harvard in McHenry County.
One tank car, which leaked for hours before being contained Monday night, contained shock fluid, Davis said. Another tank car that ended up on its side contained ethylene oxide, a flammable material widely used to sterilize medical supplies, but a Union Pacific manager on the scene determined that tank was not leaking, Davis said.
Authorities ordered the evacuation of about 500 residents in the nearby unincorporated town of Lawrence because of the potential for a hazardous materials situation, said Capt. David Shepherd with the McHenry County sheriff's office. No injuries were reported, he said.
Three other derailed cars on the train headed to Janesville, Wis., from North Lake contained auto parts, and seven more were empty, Davis said.
