I know two people who've had their S2000s stolen. I suppose mainly so that the engines can find their way into Civics.

I don't know anyone who would drive those other vehicles on the list. I also don't know any car thieves.

I feel obligated to point out that Hummers, Escalades, and Magnums are frequently stolen because most of them happen to be in areas with high rates of car theft.

In the case of the Durango, I believe it's merely good Samaritans to blame for liberating the owner.

Glad to see that the Ford Freestyle is on the Least-Stolen list. That's a car you could leave unlocked and with the engine running outside of any reform school.

In other news, Dodge is rumoured to be encouraging dealers to leave Magnums unlocked, with the keys in the ignition. In case someone wants to test drive one. Permanently.

This list is for the claim amounts. I am sure that the civic and the accord are still stolen the most, but the claim amount for them didn't put them on the list. As for the F-250 and 350, the 7.3 and the 6.0 diesel are a $5000 upgrade on those trucks. Those get spendy quick.

@PrimaveraPelops: If you'll take another look, the list is sorted by number of claims per 1000. The claim amount figures are simply there for your enjoyment.

Theft rate represents a combination of factors: numbers of cars produced, how desirable they are, how frequently the cars are involved in wrecks or need repair parts, whether the parts can be shard among more car models, the value of the cars, and how easy the car is to steal.

My insurance company maintains their own 'high theft vehicle' list, and surcharges any car on it. It includes, basically, anything you might be willing to sit in....

Something is fishy...Civics and other Hondacuras almost ALWAYS rank highly on these lists due to interchangeability of parts (thanks to tuners). But I see none here, save for s2000.

Escalade...For the same reason it is popular with thieves

I have another theory, one involving the proclivity of ownership among a certain array of image-obsessed young males who frequent less-than-reputable parts of town and associate with less-than-reputable peers. But I can't say any more because that's sort of like redlining. Which is, interestingly enough, related to GM's name for their performance models.

@The Name's Ash78, Housewares: Yeah, I am suprised about the Ford Super Duty Trucks. You do not see that many of them in the ghettos. S2000 motor explains why that car is often stolen but the superduty? It must happen in more rural areas than Ghetto fantastic Baltimore.

@oddboxalfa: I wonder if the Supercrews are stolen from construction sites or something.

But don't forget this is "rate per thousand," so it doesn't take much theft to skew a low-volume vehicle. Same deal with S2000, probably.

@oddboxalfa: If your F250/350 is stolen, head for the nearest and most obvious border town and you will see your truck heading down to Mexico. It is the vehicle of choice for drug dealers and human traffickers, especially the 4x4 models.
