    He is an EXCELLENT Rally driver winning the middle east rally 14 times.. i really hope he's fine because he's a great person..


    that said, rally drivers should stick to that, formula 1 is a whole different thing !

    I'd normally agree, but I want to see what happens with Seb Loeb driving a 24 hours of LeMans car. I think he's just testing for the team, but he might be a driver.


    The man is totally awesome on pavement with a "300" bhp AWD rally car, so in a vehicle with a COG another half-a-meter closer to the pavement, he might be scarily good.


    One thing you can't do in many other wheeled sports which can be done in rallying...you can't take out a telephone pole and keep going. Or drive on three wheels for an extended period. In fact, I think Loeb got a citation in Monaco for doing just that between stages. The local constabulary didn't dig how his Citroën was gouging the pavement, I guess.

    @sub-$3K luxury rides are expendable: Loeb did some F1 testing last fall for Scuderia Toro Rosso...as I recall he did respectably well.

    F1 steering wheels are something like 6in lock-to-lock aren't they? I mean, giving that to ANYONE not a qualified F1 driver is just stupid on a colossal level.


    I recall a number of years ago a Car and Driver writer being given the opportunity to drive an F1 car. The final instructions to him were, "For the love of God, DON'T WRECK IT." And this was the guy who test cars like McLarens and such. He spun it out entering turn 1, nearly bought the farm, and that was the end of that test drive.


    Lesson: Guys who drive cars for a living are NOWHERE NEAR the skill level of a Formula 1 driver.


    On the other hand, any idiot can drive a NASCAR around the oval. It's doable while asleep to any halfway-competent driver. Goes to show you exactly how much more of a real sport F1 is vs. NASCAR.

    @Wankelin' For A Rotary: Not to start an argument here, but it does take skill to drive NASCAR as well. The cars have twice the weight with half the grip as F1 cars making them much more unstable. Also much of NASCAR relies on Drafting since the cars are so closely matched up which means you are essentially tailgating for 3 hours at 180+. I'm just saying bash the sport as much as you want but don't take away from the fact that the drivers themselves do have their own skills as well.

    @Bullitt417: It does take great skill to RACE a NASCAR car, just not too great a skill to drive it at 90-95% of its potential. Heck for a few hundred bucks you can go to one of the NASCAR driving experiences and drive 160mph+ on a superspeedway with less than a days training. Racing in traffic is a whole 'nother story. The difference between 1st and last place in a Cup race is probably the difference between driving the car at 100% potential vs. 99.99% potential. As seen on Top Gear and many other times a modern F1 car basically tries to kill ya. Most good drivers would be doing good to drive a modern F1 car to 70% of its potential, if they could even make a lap on a track, only the Pros can come close to 99%+ of potential.

    When asked for a comment, Bernie Ecclestone said that he was launching an investigation into the possibility that Lewis Hamilton illegally allowed Mohammed bin Sulayem to pass him under the safety car.


    McLaren refused to comment.


    Max Mosely was not available for comment, but his mistress...er...secretary said he would be back in 3 Reichseconds.

    @tek_nic: F1 banned traction control for 2008. Maybe they should consider adding it back to the cars if they're going to be giving "test drives".
