Detroit Auto Show: Top Five Concept Car Features That'll Never See Production

Concept cars are notorious for rarely making it to the street. But what about the enticing features that designers include in their dreamy visions of our automotive future? We combed through the files we've amassed at the show this week and come up with five features that don't stand a chance in hell of ever escaping the shimmering incubator of the world's design studios. Count 'em down, after the jump. More »

Detroit Auto Show: 2008 Lincoln MKT Live Reveal

Ford design overlord Peter Horbury introduced the MKT ("T" is for Touring), pointing out several enticing touches. You've got a 3D SYNC touchscreen meant to mimic the iPhone and something called a "bustle-back" rear, which is explicitly intended to convince Americans they're not buying a hatchback. Despite Horbury's presence, the vehicle pleasantly lacked Daveness (well, at least the bars in the grille are vertical). The press photos don't give a full impression of how truly wide that rear C-pillar is—up close and in profile, it looks strikingly like an old English cab. When the MKT hits production, we don't expect the debuted seating configuration to remain so luxurious, as Lincoln can easily cram an extra row in the back. Press release and press photos below the jump.

Detroit Auto Show: Rancheroized Lincoln MKT Concept; No, It's Not Real

If Lincoln had a sense of humor, they might have gone with a Ranchero version of the MKT concept that's showing in Detroit today. Of course, they did build the Blackwood pickup, so they're not completely without irony, intended or not. Still, we're not relying on The Man to supply such a car; instead we turn to commenter Adamskiy, who mocked up an MKT Ranchero, sans white fiberglass cap (though maybe that'll be in a future draft). May all your beers be served in Swarovski crystal.

Detroit Auto Show: 2008 Lincoln MKT Concept

Just as predicted, the 2008 Lincoln MKT is the Ford Flex-based derivative, though with a wildly different outcome. It's as if they took the Flex and shaved off every angle to create the Lincolnesque profile. This MKT concept features a 3.5-liter V-6 EcoBoost engine good for 340 horsepower and 340 ft.-lb of torque. This is still in the concept stage, so it features Swarovski crystals with backlit LEDs and uprecycled plastics. If this sees the light of production we're not expecting that to make it. Full press release below the jump.

Detroit Auto Show: Lincoln MKT Concept Coming to Detroit?

In a boring article about the boringness of alphanumeric naming in the auto industry, the LA Times let it slip Ford will be unveiling a concept called the Lincoln MKT at the Detroit Auto Show. Whoops, that boring article just got interesting. What is this MKT you speak of LA Times? Is it a car? A truck? Is it a concept in the Hummer parlance — a suvvie with a truck bed? Do tell. We can't wait to find out next week when the curtain will drop on yet another MK-something-er-other, but more than likely it's the Lincoln version of the Ford Flex...at least that's what our sources are telling us.[LATimes.com]
