    I always look at changes like this as good. Rally racing has been popular before cars. I don't see this as a death in any sort, it just allows for grassroot organizations and small events to take over. Better drivers get more attention and other car companies might get a chance to get a good car built up.


    You never know.

    @Timtoolman, now with power tools!: They pulled out of the World Rally Championship at the top level. While they don't have a factory team, they're still involved at the lower levels of rallying on a limited sponsorship basis.

    @jb wants a laser on his car: Forcing the Big 2.5 out of racing wouldn't be prudent. First off, it's advertising, and even in a weak economy, it pays to keep your brand at the forefront of the consumer mindset.


    This is something very few companies understand right now (Apple Inc. being an exception) and ad budgets are being slashed. There's an white paper on this somewhere, but I can't put my hand on it right now.


    Second thing; racing provides the opportunity to test ideas and components that may make it into production cars, providing innovation and product differentiation to the brand.


    So, I wouldn't consider racing budgets to be an extravagance despite the financial condition of the automakers. Plus I sure do like to watch those cars go round and round!

    @jb wants a laser on his car: How about when is the economy in general going to shut down nascar? In a sport so heavily dependent on advertising (let's be real- the "racing" in nascar is kind of a joke), it's gonna be hit hard.

    If you can't find a better way to spend your time, find a stretch of road and pick up trash.


    Then you can put up a sign advertising your company or product for that stretch of road.

    @jduffy13: I did, before the TV Gods took it from me. And not just Speedvision/Speed TV's broadcasts from a few years ago, I remember seeing highlight packages of the RAC Rally, Monte Carlo, Acropolis and Safari rallies on Wide World of Sports back in the day. Enjoyed it immensely then, miss it greatly today.

    @SCROGGZILLA RAIDS COMMAS!!: Second, I remember at some point being able to watch WRC, Dakar, and the random Baja rally races. You can't watch rally because they are too busy playing crap like Pinks, Unique, Whips, or some D-bag talking about how to make a kit street rod/trailer queen. I am lucky to maybe see some GT cup every now and then.


    I am really hoping that Rally America will catch on and take over a little. Maybe we will see some competition between Monter, Redbull, and Rockstar in a Subie/Evo shootout.
