Car: Chevy Impala

Why It's On Death Row: In trim levels lower than "SS", the Chevy Impala is but a shadow of its previous self, fit only for duty as a municipal service vehicle. It's one of GM's most revered nameplates on one of GM's most out-of-date cars.
How It Could Get A Reprieve: We've always loved the idea of the Impala and it would be a shame to waste all the positive energy around the name. Perhaps our dreams of a G8-based Impala will not come to life, but in the next round of platforms we hope something is waiting to underpin a truly awesome, RWD Impala.

Car: PT Cruiser

Why It's On Death Row: The PT Cruiser has been around for almost a full decade with only minor changes. As cool as the idea of a retro American car was at the turn of the millennium, it's no longer that cool. It was a hit, and now it just wont go away. It reminds us of the time we heard the band Wang Chung at an Earth Day concert. They were a one-hit-wonder and, rather than trying to expand, they just played various versions of "Everybody Wang Chung Tonight." It was sad.
How It Could Get A Reprieve: Retro isn't always bad. If only there were a small Italian car Chrysler could somehow bring over to fill the cool-cute-compact hole in their lineup...

Car: Chevy HHR

Why It's On Death Row: Much like the PT Cruiser, the HHR was an idea that was probably only going to work once. The high belt-line, aggressive flares and tiny windows scream old GM.
How It Could Get A Reprieve: The Ford Transit Connect has filled an empty niche in the U.S. commercial market and, we believe, there will be some non-commercial sales soon enough. Take the awesome little Ecotec engine and small platform and try making a truly American high-roof wagon.

Car: Toyota Venza

Why It's On Death Row: The only thing the new Toyota Venza has truly succeeded in doing is forcing Honda to make an even uglier competitor. There are numerous vehicles in the Toyota lineup offering similar utility, size, and power. Why another one?
How It Could Get A Reprieve: People love their Toyotas and, it's somehow some people out there seem to love the Camry-wagon Venza. But rather than make a more aggressive, larger Camry, why not make a lighter and sleeker version? What a statement that would make.

Car: Mitsubishi Galant

Why It's On Death Row: We once enjoyed the Galant, especially in VR-4 trim, a delightfully buzzy and sporty sedan to counteract less enticing alternatives. The Galant does none of that now. It's not particularly fast, sporty, or attractive. The interior is awful and the options are laughable.
How It Could Get A Reprieve: The Mitsubishi PS platform is no longer competitive, especially underpinning a sedan. But hey, a new platform with a bit of the edge back and a Raillart version could go along way.

Car: Lexus ES

Why It's On Death Row: You may wonder what a successful car like the Lexus ES is doing on this list, but hear us out. Toyota's CEO has recently said the company has stopped making exciting cars and it's something he would like to change. Most of the Lexus lineup is as good or better than most of its competitors. The ES is merely a rebadged Camry put there to bring in buyers that wouldn't be able to afford a Lexus otherwise.
How It Could Get A Reprieve: Why not build something exciting, with value to bring more buyers into the lineup? Less AARP more RPM? The HS was a start and the next generation ES could end up more like the LF-Ch concept? It's probably too profitable to ever happen, but we can hope.

Car: Mitsubishi Raider

Why It's On Death Row: Take a drink for every Mitsubishi Raider you've seen on the road. Congrats, you're still sober. Mitsubishi has never been the best choice for a small truck in the U.S. and the Raider, which shares its platform with Dodge, is no exception.
How It Could Get A Reprieve: Why not a Lancer-based El Camino sport truck? Just because Pontiac backed out doesn't mean you can't. You had the balls to build a sporty wagon, show us up again and build a sport truck!

Car: Chevy Aveo

Why It's On Death Row: When Americans looked for small cars as gas prices rose America stepped up with what it had: a Korean car. It's small, crappy, and there are bigger cars that return better mileage. It's the best argument Chevy has for being used.
How It Could Get A Reprieve: We're not sure there are a lot of people waiting for the next-generation Aveo, but GM seems to have a few ideas for a small compact car. We sort of doubt it'll carry the same name.

Car: Maybach 57 and 62

Why It's On Death Row: This is a car we'd typically like but the Maybach is maybe the most expensive parts-binner ever. The 57 and 62 is just old Mercedes with lots of hype. It was cool for about two minutes and then everyone realized how much Bentley they could have for the money and moved on. It costs more than $358K to get into the door and the price jumps by leaps and bounds for all the status symbols you're going to want with it (goatcheese dispenser, anyone?). It's also very dated in terms of styling. Give us a BRABUS S-Class over this any day.
How It Could Get A Reprieve: If you're going to continue to charge insane rates upgrade the appearance, up the power so it'll go 200 MPH and get Jay Z to buy one.

Car: Chrysler Sebring

Why It's On Death Row: The American car you'd swear was built in China. It's as if Chrysler had some sort of Major League strategy to destroy the company and move it to Italy and they needed a truly bad car to cause them to go bankrupt. There's nothing we like about it. There are no redeeming qualities in how it drives, looks, sounds, feels, or sells.
How It Could Get A Reprieve: No reprieve. No mercy. The best we can offer is a quick death. Which is better than the pain Chrysler caused us in bringing this horseshit abortion of a mid-size sedan to market.

<![CDATA[Brothers Race Across Oklahoma At 130 MPH To Get To Chili's]]> After eluding numerous spike strips and attempts by a Dodge Charger Police Edition to run them off the road, the brothers behind the helm of this Mitsubishi Galant raced off the Oklahoma highway and into a Chili's parking lot. Once inside the parking lot they were easy pickin's for the state troopers, slamming into a parked car. What compelled them to race at speeds above 130 MPH to get to a Chili's? Was it a Mitsubishi Galant GTZ? According to reports, police found some Mary Jane in the car, which leads us to believe a plate of Southwestern Egg Rolls may be the real culprit. [MSNBC]

<![CDATA[Mysterious Mitsubishi Coming To Paris]]> An image of an as-yet-unknown Mitsubishi set for a global unveil at the 2008 Paris Motor Show has surfaced, and it helps nobody. They might as well have released an image of a Mitsubishi dealership and put an arrow on it saying, "It goes in here" because the Mitsu "angry face" we see here looks pretty much exactly like the one visible on the current Lancer.

Perhaps this new model will be a mid-sized car that doesn't make your eyes burn, or a small crossover that appeals to the "people with sight" market segment. This concept may finally be evidence the angry-face will spread, which we would welcome. Just as long as whatever it is doesn't look like the Galant...anything but the Galant. [World Car Fans]

<![CDATA[Chicago Auto Show: 2009 Mitsubishi Galant, Three Varieties of Boring]]> In case you were wondering, Mitsubishi did bust out a trio of updated Galants on Thursday, and we were monumentally underwhelmed. The Galant Sport, Galant Sport V6, and the Galant Ralliart all took a bow. The cars are available with a mix and match of the 2.4 L 4 cyl MiVEC, 3.8 L V6, and 3.8L V6 equipped with MiVEC, traction control, and Nav system as well as external indicators of the various performance levels.



Though the outside is iffy, the insides aren't bad, and the sound system choices are respectable, with a 360W Rockford Acoustics designed 8 speaker system, 7" touchscreen, and 6 months of free Sirius radio. We don't want to bust on the Galants too much because that would be mean, but at this point, prettying up the Galant is like putting lipstick on a pig. In case you were wondering why there are only pics of two cars, we're assuming the Galant Sport (sans V6) would have put the gathered masses to sleep.

<![CDATA[2009 Mitsubishi Galant Revealed Before Chicago Auto Show]]> Mitsubishi will show off the facelifted 2009 Mitsubishi Galant at this year's Chicago Auto Show. In addition to the mildly revised sheet metal, the car also gets new taillights and a new grille. The Galant will come in four-cylinder ES and Sport editions, V6 Sport edition and line-topping Ralliart. The Ralliart V6 is of the 3.8-liter MIVEC variety and is good for 258 horsepower. The V6 in the V6 Sport (pictured) is good for 230 horsepower and the four-cylinder model is the 2.5-liter MIVEC that produces approximately 160 horsepower. Press release below the jump.

MITSUBISHI SHOWCASES NEW 2009 GALANT AT CHICAGO AUTO SHOW

Mitsubishi will showcase its new 2009 Galant midsize sedan at the Chicago Auto Show, Feb. 8-17 at McCormick Place. Presenting expressive new styling, new user technology and a new value standard, the 2009 Galant brings Mitsubishi performance and character to the highly competitive midsize segment. The 2009 Galant arrives at Mitsubishi dealers in February.

The introduction of the new 2009 Galant follows a rise in Mitsubishi's 2007 sales (+9% over 2006) along with a line of major new model launches. Building on the success of the all-new Lancer launched in spring 2007 and the all-new Outlander crossover SUV, Mitsubishi introduced the high-performance 2008 Lancer Evolution that arrived in dealerships in late January.

The 2009 Galant line offers four distinct trim levels and three performance levels, providing the wide array of choices that midsize buyers seek. The performance-tuned Galant Ralliart tops the line, which for 2009 also includes the 4-cylinder ES, the new 4-cylinder Sport Edition, and the V-6 Sport. The 2009 Galant Sport models integrate new standard factory value packages that add a long roster of premium equipment at a substantial savings over what those features would have cost separately. As a result, the 2009 Galant Sport models offer a significant $1,000+ MSRP value advantage over comparably equipped competitive midsize models.

Smart Mitsubishi Styling
The 2009 Galant stands apart from the sedan crowd with a smartly styled front end and sophisticated new lines that are especially apparent in the rear three-quarter view. Rakish new hood lines, a new grille and lower intake highlight the completely re-designed front end. From the rear, the Galant features wider rear glass, new tail lamps and bumper treatment, and a new deck lid with a center, high-mounted stop-lamp (CHSL). New standard 17-inch alloy wheels identify the Galant Sport models.

Inside, premium materials enhance the Galant's interior and passenger comfort. Galant provides a roomy midsize package with 101.1 cu. ft. of passenger space and a generous 37 inches of rear legroom. Interior fabrics and surfaces are designed to impart comfort, warmth and refinement. In addition, a wide array of available user technologies meets with the latest consumer demands for onboard entertainment and convenience.

Performance and Top Safety in One Package
At the top of the Galant line, the Ralliart model is powered by a 258-hp 3.8-liter MIVEC V-6 engine and equipped with a 5-speed Sportronic automatic transmission, plus special Ralliart-tuned sport suspension, new 18-inch alloy wheels and exclusive exterior styling. A 160-hp 2.4-liter MIVEC 4-cylinder engine, teamed to a four-speed automatic transmission with Sportronic, powers the Galant ES and Sport Edition models. The new Sport V-6 model exclusively features a smooth, responsive 230-hp 3.8-liter V-6 engine.

Four-cylinder Galant models sold in California, Maine, Massachusetts, New York and Vermont are certified as Partial Zero-Emissions Vehicles (PZEV). That means that they not only meet the ultra-stringent California Super Low Emission Vehicles (SULEV) standard but also have zero evaporative emissions from the fuel system and come with an extended (15 years or 150,000 miles) warranty on emission-control components. The PZEV-certified Galant has just slightly less rated power output - 155 hp compared to 160 for the federally certified model. PZEV-certified vehicles can also be purchased in states neighboring those with the requirement.

The Galant's rigid body structure sets the stage for responsive handling and a sporty driving experience, balanced by a smooth, quiet ride. The proven MacPherson strut design front suspension attaches to a sub-frame featuring a large, rigid cross member. The low-mounted, multi-link rear suspension features stiff hydro-formed cross members that minimize flex and help reduce road noise inside the cabin.

All Galant models come standard with a high level of safety technology, including anti-lock brakes (ABS) with electronic brake-force distribution (EBD), dual-stage front airbags, front seat-mounted side-impact airbags, and side front and rear curtain airbags.

Galant Sport V-6 and Ralliart are both equipped with standard traction control that helps prevent wheel spin by monitoring and controlling the speed of each front drive wheel. A Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), standard on all Galant models, can immediately alert the driver to a sudden loss or change in tire pressure.

New Value Standard
Illustrating Mitsubishi's attention to customer value, the Galant Sport models are equipped as standard with such premium features as a power glass sunroof and cloth heated front seats. In contrast, many competitive midsize sedans offer these features only in the top trim line models. Additional premium features in the Galant Sport Edition and Galant Sport V-6 include an automatic climate control system, 8-way power driver's seat, steering wheel audio controls, auto-dimming rear-view mirror with Homelink® garage door opener/transmitter, 17-inch aluminum-alloy wheels, fog lights, heated side view mirrors, theft-deterrent alarm system, color-keyed rear spoiler, windshield shade band, dark chrome headlamp reflectors, and an illuminated glove box.

The Galant Sport V-6 model also adds a standard 360-watt Rockford Acoustic Design™ premium audio system that includes SIRIUS® Satellite Radio with a 6-month pre-paid subscription.

For customers seeking top Galant luxury with 4-cylinder economy, the Galant ES model can be optionally equipped with the Sun, Sound and Leather option package. This package essentially combines the Sport Edition standard equipment with leather seating surfaces, the Rockford Acoustic Design™ premium audio system and SIRIUS® Satellite Radio with a 6-month pre-paid subscription. An accessory iPod adapter is available for all Galant models.

True Premium Audio
Galant offers a level of OEM mobile audio performance that could challenge some luxury models. The Rockford Acoustic Design™ premium audio system that is standard for the Ralliart and Galant Sport V-6 and available for the ES model provides AM/FM/CD/MP3 playback capability, including a 6-disc in-dash CD changer. The system includes SIRIUS® Satellite Radio with a 6-month pre-paid subscription.

A linear 8-channel amplifier produces 360 watts continuous at less than 0.02% THD, with a dedicated channel driving each loudspeaker for the ultimate in sonic control. Silk dome tweeters mounted on the leading edge of the dash produce a natural multi-dimensional soundstage. Digital Signal Processing optimizes output to provide user-selectable listening environments, including "Normal," "Studio," "Club" and "Concert."

Ralliart Performance: A Complete Grand Touring Package
Galant Ralliart has the heart of a high-performance GT car - the Mitsubishi Eclipse GT, to be precise. Its 3.8-liter V-6 produces 258 hp at 5,700 rpm and 258 lb.-ft. of peak torque at 4,500 rpm. Galant Ralliart is capable of accelerating from zero-to-60 mph in about six seconds, making it one of the best performers in its segment.

The Mitsubishi Innovative Valve Timing Electronic Control (MIVEC) system helps optimize power and engine efficiency across a broad engine speed range. As an example of MIVEC's benefits, the large-displacement V-6 is already producing 220 lb.-ft. of torque at just 2,000 rpm, giving the Galant Ralliart forceful off-the-line response.

The Galant Ralliart features its own sport-tuned suspension with higher-rate springs and dampers and a 21-mm rear stabilizer bar. Its 235/45R-18 all-season tires are mounted on new 18 x 8-inch seven-spoke aluminum alloy wheels. In terms of standard luxury amenities, the Galant Ralliart challenges premium performance sedans by providing perforated leather-trimmed seating surfaces, heated front seats, automatic climate control system, power glass sunroof and an auto-dimming rear view mirror with Homelink transmitter. Aluminum pedals and Micro-delta print accent panels are exclusive interior touches.

The Galant Ralliart offers one factory option, a DVD navigation system. When not equipped with the navigation system, Ralliart features a standard 4.9-inch color LCD display that provides outside temperature and a compass, as well as a trip computer with fuel mileage information, a door alarm indicator, maintenance recorder, and calendar. The display also provides an interface that allows owners to customize settings for many of the vehicle's interior functions.

Outstanding Warranty
Mitsubishi cars, sport utility vehicles and pickup trucks are backed by comprehensive new vehicle limited warranties. Mitsubishi Eclipse, Lancer, Galant, Endeavor and Outlander vehicles come with a 10-year/100,000 mile powertrain limited warranty; along with a 5-year/60,000 mile bumper to bumper new vehicle limited warranty.
