You can get a new 2008 R32 for the same price. I think there might actually be more space in the R32 when you fold both cars' rear seats down too. Then, you get some AWD with your fat little porker of a hatch. Oh... and a LOT more HP.

@DoctorNine: I wish a new R32 could be bought for the same price as the Clubman in the U.K. I think even the Golf GTI is a couple of thousand more than the Clubman.

    So, OK then;

It's not as good as a Cooper S.

    It looks Kinda funny.

    It's a bit heavier.

It's got the wrong number of doors.

    It's waaay too expensive.

It has less steering feel than the Cooper S.

The handling is a bit compromised compared to the Cooper S.

    All good points.

But the devils advocate in me has to say that the above review would only make sense if the Cooper S didn't exsist, or if this was intended to replace it. The people who are intended to buy this have a different set of priorities to people who buy Cooper esses.

How many people trade in their Z4s for X3s, for practicality, and then whinge when i doesn't handle as well?

Don't get me wrong, I still loathe the Clubman with every fibre of my being. But I still want to see it get a fair trial.

Damn. The car's not my cup of tea, but it's a small, fuel-efficient luxury car. For that, it's my hero. Rich people worried about status aren't going to buy a Mazdaspeed 3. But if they're buying this, they're not buying every other luxury car out there, ie giant Lexi and Cadillacs and what have you that use way more gasoline.

    And, Chevy HHR? Really? -Really?-

@Eric Merrill: I'd probably buy the HHR SS before any of the others but I'm an odd duck. I've lived with that motor for 4 years so far and it's moving up into Olds 455 and Chevy 350 level territory in my favorites of all time list.

@FuzzyPlushroom: Well resale could go either way although the cars with these motors seem to be holding okay so far despite the limited market. Doesn't matter either way to me because I'll be getting a spare if they get cheap enough and I have no intention of selling mine. Ever.

Resale has never been a major concern of mine. I drive them until they either die or I tire of them and either way I'm not looking to capitalize. I wanted to put a lit rag in the gas tank of the Civic and push it into the dealership but cooler heads prevailed. I figured it would have been worth it for what they put us through. My wife figured the arson charge probably would not have been worth it.

The Impala has already gone farther than the Civic did, screw resale.

@mytdawg: I'm with you there. I buy cheap cars and I drive them until their value is probably negative.

I'm sticking up for the Clubman because it's made for a market quite opposite the Jalopnik crowd, and in that market, it has its merits, and they're merits that benefit all of us.

@Eric Merrill: I actually don't find the clubman all that unattractive. I just don't ever want to be that reliant on a dealer ever again. It's a little too esoteric for the small repair shops I prefer to deal with.

Definitely a lifestyle car. Look at your other FWD options: a GTI is a better initial value, the Mazdaspeed3 clobbers the Mini in performance, and at $32K you could start looking at a 9-3 2.0T Sportcombi...210hp, 30mpg, and only 400 pounds more than the Mini.

The best argument for this is low depreciation.

The problem with these cars is on of "dilution." Yes, they dilute the brand. You either stay true to the image AND performance.

Joe Professional has a family now? Needs more space, then fuck him. You gotta be willing to put up with a certain inconvenience to own sporting cars, it's stupid for companies to try to cater those who are putting convenience *first* sporting only on weekends, you end up with this pig here. Get a fucking Ford Flex if you need space.

As the owner of a Clubman S I must respectfully disagree with all three parts of this review. The handling is nowhere near as bad as the reviews make it out to be. I can keep up turn for turn with the hatchbacks through any twisty roads I've thrown at it.

This is a great car if you like turns and twisty roads. It has nearly identical acceleration as the hatchback. Overall I'd say performance is about 95% of of a cooper hatchback, which is still way better than most cars this size.

As for price, the clubman has the same base price as most of the comparison cars. Base price for the clubman is $1k less than the HHR SS. I agree the clubman is hard to justify at the $30k+ point (and crazy at the ~$40k JCW Clubman), but it is possible to configure a really nice clubman in the upper 20's.

As for comparison cars, I think the GTI should be on the list. That was the other car I was considering before buying the Clubman.

In short, there is a compromise compared to a hatchback cooper, but it's nowhere near as bad as the review implies.
