Thats definitely a 2nd-gen (FC) RX-7 turbo engine (13b-t), not a Renesis. It is positively identified by the crank-angle sensor, the coils, throttle body, oil pressure sender, stock oil feed line for the turbo, mounts for the power steering/AC bracket and oil fill tube and dipstick.

The absence of an Rx-5? Mazda doesn't want to get stung by the MGA Twin Cam effect. Namely, unsuspecting Miata customers that give the rotary a try find out to their dismay that their gas mileage has been destroyed, they have to shift the gears more, the car constantly needs oil, and visits to the dealer go up. Most Miata owners/drivers are not responsible, patient, or passionate enough to be a rotary owner. #miata

Not sure this is anything new. I beleive people have been putting RX-7 engines in Miatas for years now. I do like the fastback, strange that this is the first gen Miata I would think for SEMA you would send a newer car. #miata

@rigidjunkie: I'd think the average Joe would keep a perfectly good new car stock. He's got the old Miata he bought for his ex-wife, which he got to keep when she R-U-N-N-O-F-T with that no-good banker, and he's not too attached to it, except the little spud just runs out sooo goooood. So he's not afraid to do a little wrenching, scuff up the paint, and maybe void the insurance. It's not like she's ever gonna get the damn thing back, right? And it's such a girly car, it'd better have some balls in it somewhere if he's gonna get behind the wheel. And shit, the SBC thing's been done. Even the no-good banker's done that. #miata

That car is owned by Mike from Autokonexion [ [www.autokonexion.com] ] and he has been a great boon to the roadster community with his development of the crazy widebody kit you see here, and the further developement of the removable hatchback kit. I assume the rotary was just the icing for this car, the real artwork is in the body. #miata

Really need some stats to see just how much sense this would make.

Once upon a time I had dreams of sticking an RX-3 engine into an X1/9 - for about 7 lbs/hp. Would have made a nice sensible commuter. #miata

Yeah, they're crazy... Taking their extremely capable sports cars and infusing them with gobs of power. I mean, who does that? For $35k I could have a 2400 lb Miata with a brand new, with warranty, Corvette engine with matching new transmission and differential. I mean really, people put that in something 10-15 years old? They must be crazy! Don't they realize their wasting their money on something old?

I call shenanigans! Everyone must be forced to drive new Hyundais at track days, because Hyundais are new!

@Bret: Well, thats a great way to completely misinterpret my comment. A RENESIS is just a bit different than an LS1 swap.
The LS1 is actually cheaper, for one. Not only that, but its proven and reliable.
Secondly, the LS1 has more than double the stock output of the RENESIS, and has the potential for FAR MORE.

Now, if I had said in my previous comment: 'motor swapping a miata is stupid, you are all stupid' then your reply would be warranted. However, I did not.

Although if you would like to RENESIS-swap a miata, go for it - but dont cry when everyone calls you a retard because you didnt go the easier/cheaper route with one of a dozen other engine options.

Such options include: 13B, 12A, FE20, SR20, FC22, LSx, Ford5.0, Ford2.3T, MZR, BP-4W turbo, and so forth. #miata

@RandomGuyWithaMazda: You're welcome. Now keep making cogent comments. Come on though, you have to admit that your argument of "stupid to money" is based on the age of the chassis - "10-15 year old Miata". Would it be less stupid if the chassis were newer? That is the basis for my snarky comment.

FWIW: I'd love to see a Renesis in a NC Miata. I could probably do it cheaper than an LSx (wonders what crate Renesises cost via Mazda Motorsports Support). #miata

@Bret: Im a fan of hugging it out - but I still stand by my stupid-to-money ratio being a function of how poorly the RENESIS performs, all Miata chassis are superb, even if a bit floppy and cute. (although I do own a late-model NB myself, so I am biased) #miata
