Moore makes a few valid points, but ruins it with unbalanced overtly left-wing diatribe. What GM and American needs is better balance between left and right idealisms. And not too much of one or the other extremes.

Now I'm all for yelling at GM and the Gubmint for being fiscally irresponsible, but this Mother Nature and Magic Happy Trains bullshit has got to stop. I don't know what Moore has a degree in (journalism maybe?) but I'm fairly certain that he isn't qualified to create an economic, industrial, or energy plan for the entire country, much less the Super Number Two Best Automaker from the Land of the DoubleMochaFrappaccino.

Dude, stick to writing about cars. This is embarassing.

I always get a good laugh out of the eco freaks telling me I need to change my lifestyle to save the planet... the number one producer of greenhouse gasses is from energy production... I live in Washington, my power comes from hydro-electric... Zero emissions, so despite my best efforts (driving around in circles for no reason, leaving computers running 24/7, keeping the AC turned down in the summer) I still have a smaller "carbon footprint" than they do and they drive the car that couldn't make my daily commute.

I'll be a bad canadian and stick my nose into your politics, they all need to STFU..
I don't understand why people give them airtime, sure I understand the first ammendment, but for the sake of humanity, if your going to bring your opinion to the national level, at least do some f'cking research and not just spout off half truths to get more uninformed citizens riled up about shit you barely know anything about.
Any of these morons who can't have a rational conversation without spewing lies and pointless statistics to further their case should put in stocks and then forced to expound on their opinion in the public square. See how long it takes till they come clean when asked direct questions from us "peons who need to be told what to think"
Waste of oxygen, the lot of em. They're no more intellectual than joe the plumber.. and well.. at least joe could probably unclog the shit spewin from their pipes.

I don't believe a free market nor government control is the best way to do things. Each tends to gain momentum and this momentum is perverted to give power (Enron, etc.) and profits to those in control instead of following the needs of the people. If credit wasn't so free-flowing, some people may have chosen a cheaper and more economical car rather than a bloated soccer-mom Canyonero. The Big 3 used the free flow of credit and built the trucks the people wanted. They concentrated on these profit earners, but neglected their other products, so when customer tastes changed, they could not move fast enough to cope.
A directed government push towards new transportation infrastructure and incentives to alter customer behavior can be desirable. This is how Germany got the Autobahns, and both Europe and Japan got their high speed lines and efficient rail networks (except for the UK). Why not make the tough choices easier? Make efficient roadways. Make rail lines to carry freight (and take some trucks off the highways) and transport people between population centers. Invest in renewable energies so when the oil companies want to stick our nuts in a vise, we aren't caught with our pants down. Why not use abandoned car factories to build (and maybe export!!) these products? Let government push some of my money towards creating innovations and helping new companies build products and protect the good companies from getting crushed by status quo seeking forces in the free market.
Free market forces tend to be incredibly short sighted, and tends to let 'non-essential' things go to crap while chasing profits. Government tends to continue pouring money down holes because the bureaucracy doesn't aggressively combat waste, but they do provide services. Interaction between the two may provide more beneficial relationship.
Trucks and trains and automobiles: Ever been on a bullet train? It's sweet. The interior is like an airplane, but the space each person has is comparable to business class or better. It's quiet. No loud jet engines. Sick of driving an hour to the airport so you can arrive 2 hours early for your flight, then find out your flight has been delayed an extra hour, then have to do the same thing in reverse getting home? Unless you are going coast-to-coast, high speed rail is comparable in time, and destroys air travel in both comfort and BS factors. Acela is a POS. It's just a fast train. We need to grab a pair of nuts, build rail lines even though the soccer moms don't want a rail line within sight of their McMansion, and make it work. Build a freight line beside the high speed lines, and take trucks off the highways. There will be trucks at the terminals, don't worry, but for long haul, use a train. Light rail? There is a size limit to metropolitan areas were these do not work. That's a fact. But improve the rail systems in areas where it will be beneficial, and provide the connections between population centers.
Maybe you do want to drive a car from Albany, NY to Springfield, IL. That's okay, I firmly believe in cars. I pretty much guarantee that you'll only want to drive it once. Why not drop your car off at the train station (because planes won't fly there more than 1-2 times a week), hop on the high speed rail to Chicago, take an express to Springfield, then grab a Zipcar at the station to go about your business? You've probably slept on the train, gotten there in a similar amount of time, and you're good to go :)
If you're out on your farm or working in a machine shop, there should be pickup trucks built to suit your needs. Maybe the gas tax has been increased dramatically to fund infrastructure improvements. Since you're live in an area where a truck is necessary for your business, I think a gas tax refund is definitely in order!
Michael Moore is a left-wing commie pinko fear-monger. He can burn in hell, be healed, and burn in hell repeatedly for all eternity. Don't let the BS he drapes across the ideas he brings up turn you away from ideas that may be useful and prudent. Just like proper investing, take the long view, be prepared for some short term suffering, and end up ahead in the future. We've been too afraid to take the jump and make changes that take us out of the comfort zone.

Another important thing to point out to Mr. Moore would be that if GM didn't exist, ever, would Flint? Seems easy to blame for the downfall, but last I checked, there was a good 70 years of existence prior to things going bad- and at least 40 of those were extremely good to the people involved with the company.

That's not much of a free market, that's socialism plain and simple.
If you believed in your own words, GM wouldn't exist. Plain and simple facts.

Moore is advocating the takeover of GM assets for his, and the environmental movement's bidding. I don't like GM being bailed out, I'd rather they be subject to the forces of the market, but since the gov is bailing them out I'd rather they be out of bankruptcy as soon as possible and making products people will buy rather than pie-in-the-sky options nobody wants.

i want bullet trains and efficient mass transit. plenty of people do.
why would GM be any more competent the second time around?
what Moore is advocating is an artificial push forward in technology and infrastructure. dangerous stuff i suppose but in the same way as putting a man on the moon.
we didn't get much return on that investment right?

I do like the idea of an energy/transportation "Manhattan Project," but if it were to happen, it shouldn't be mixed up with a bankrupt private company. If the American people want it so bad, their congressman should be able to generate enough support for a federally mandated, funded, and operated project.

OK the bus stops at one block from your house and two blocks from your work. On a rainy day you still get wet.

1. Vega
2. Citation
3. Aztek
Moore may be fat, but he's smarter than the rest of you combined. Keep buying GM's garbage, fools.
06/02/09
And secondly, the Aztek only failed on a styling level, which is largely a personal opinion, so your pathetic excuse for an arguement is moot. It just so happened to create the entire Crossover vehicle niche.
