While I'm busy not doing the work I should be doing...
...I've never understood the appeal of "driving fast in traffic". That's what I call what most 17-20 year olds would call "racing".
When I see the guy doing >100, weaving in and out of cars on the freeway or a big surface street, I don't really understand what the appeal is.
In most cases, you're nowhere near the limits of grip of the car unless someone pulls in front of you and you have to do a panic stop/swerve. You're just kind of floating left and right.
@Mad_Science: While I enjoy "spirited" driving on country highways (and in the snow), I've found it best to maintain some sanity in traffic, as well. What's the point of testing your limits when you don't know what other drivers are going to do, especially when most people aren't into checking their mirrors or blind spots regularly?
I've done stuff that could have led to people getting killed. I'm bet most people here have, too.
I accidentally blew through a red light one night last year, with a toddler in the back seat and my wife sleeping next to me. I was tired. I wasn't anywhere near over the limit, but I'd had a glass of wine earlier. I was screwing around trying to find a different radio station. My head just wasn't in the game. That could have ended like this, with me watching the medics pull my dead kid out of the car. Those thoughts weren't running through my head at the time, though.
Triple digit speeds on roads with traffic? I've never been anywhere near THAT irresponsible. But I've been in cars with at least two friends who've pulled shit like that. I'd guess that at least half of high school guys have done something that could have ended in a way that'd have the public calling for their heads.
How do you punish people for doing stupid stuff that usually goes down uneventfully? I dunno if he deserves life in jail any more than two of my more reckless-but-lucky friends. There's a difference between careless/stupid/unlucky and malicious.
That said, this guy's old enough that I don't have much sympathy for this stunt. If he killed someone I loved, I'd want him to rot in jail forever.
@ppiddy:
[OMBUDSMAN'S NOTE: By combining self-deprecating humor/honesty (in the manner of Big Harv) with some other good points, you win. Great comment.]
I've tried hard to be "the asshole who killed himself" rather than "the asshole who killed 2 people". But, to be honest, I've run done some stupid crap in my day.
It's easy to get caught up in the feeling of ignorant invincibility when the engine's revving and the testosterone and adrenaline are flowing.
It takes real guts, wisdom and integrity so "pussy out" and let the other guy speed away from the light for the win.
Too bad all three are regularly in short supply.
Hopefully we can all learn from incidents like this.

@Al Navarro: so what you're saying is - Mr. Madison, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.
@zeeboid: ...or a racetrack? I mean, trackdays are what, $200 at the most? Sounds like you are one of those who make real enthusiasts look bad. I got my reality check while going 5 over on a country road in a convertible Eclipse, only to round a bend with a crest to find a horse standing in the road. You never know what is going to happen in an uncontrolled environment.
@Turboner: What can I say. I am of the school where if you do something that doesn't harm anyone (doing 115 in a 70) then you haven't done anything wrong.if you kill someone however... as this dushe bag did.. then you are punished for doing somethign that harms someone else.otherwise what we have is a victimless crime, which are mostly in place to tax people.
What your missing here is how yes, its stuipd to drive like that where there is traffic, but as someone that understands common sense... I don't see anything wrong with "hypothetically" doing 130 on a 3 lane *empty* highway straight. knowing this however... there are already laws in place that punish people for accidently killing someone.
Why so much hate? Someone was going to fast, someone else pulled out in front of him and died. An unfortunate set of circumstances, and perhaps punitive measures are warranted. However, I suspect most of you have exercised less than perfect judgement at some point in your life.
I'm actually sort of glad the moron who caused this isn't dead, because that wouldn't be enough for him. Lock him up in PMITA-prison forever. That sort of negligence and indifference to anyone outside of his own thick skull deserves to spend the rest of his life looking at striped sunshine.
@TV's Paul Y.: Nothing less than on-the-spot execution would be fair. I don't want my tax dollars to pay for this degenerate to spend the rest of his life in prison.
While I certainly would not want to downplay the criminal negligent behavior of this man, I am curious as to why the judge would say it's the most egregious thing he has seen. I mean, being 16 years on the bench I'm sure he has seen multiple homicides. This man was an idiot for speeding in this area, there is no doubt about that, but I think someone who has murdered someone is far more "egregious" than that. Especially premeditated, where they consciously decide and plan to kill someone. This guy was just being a moron and being careless, his obvious intentions were not to kill anybody.
@UglyDuckCar: Judge was a she but you'd think in Louisville it would be a no-brainer to find something more egregious than a car accident, stupid as it was.
[CONSUMER´S NOTE TO OMBUDSMAN: Unfortunatly it´s easy to get this blog dripping blood with more "news" like this. There is nothing special here, just an other a-hole killing people with careless driving. The cars in question also do not seem to be that special to be mentioned.

One time a man ran over my dog that was with my little boy, who I will admit was not on a leash and did bound out into the street with out looking. The man was going maybe 50 on a fairly narrow street that had a speed limit of 35 mph. (The fact is with the number of children around, the speed limit should be 25, but that is another story.) The man was fairly shaken by the whole incident, but I said "Hey, don’t worry, you are very fortunate". "Whys that", he asked. I told him that I loved that dog, but it was just a dog, if on the other hand if he would have hit my kid, even if it was the kid’s fault, and he had been driving at that speed, I would have killed him. I have never seen that particular guy driving fast on my street again.
That’s what needs to happen to the clown in the Challenger.
@Flathead Smith: He hits my dog doing something like that, I may not kill him, but I'll dedicate the next 6 months of my life to ensuring the incident haunts him for the rest of his life.
I work with two different men named Brian Lee. The person mentioned in the article may be Bryan Lee, according to comments made by brysgal. The spelling of his name has no bearing on the stupidity of his actions.
Rule 1 of journalism is to spell names and places correctly. Rule 2 is to get the name of the dog. People always want to know the name of the dog.
