I'm quite impressed with how intact most of the cabins are, and raise a glass to the engineers.

One thing that continually amazes me about these sort of pictures is how generally survivable wrecks in Ferraris are. In all of the Enzos that Wreckedexotics.com lists (around 20) only 2-3 people died. The proportions are similar for other Ferraris. The same cannot be said of Lamborghinis or really any other brand. It seems that Ferrari is serious about the high-speed safety of their products.
@gman1023: I agree... it seems that Ferrari tend to engineer their cars to have the engine pack more prone to separate from the passenger compartment on heavy hits - whether that's intentional or just a fluke of functional design, I don't know; but you do tend to see a lot of bad Ferrari wrecks with the engine pack scattered along the highway, and everything forward of that intact.
@HoonThatFerrari: Very true, I hadn't noticed that fact before, but it definitely seems to happen. Ferrari's relative safety might be a result of their racing roots. Since they were for decades a company that sold road cars to finance race cars, they certainly have a long history of engineering cars to be survivable at high speed. While Lamborghini has some racing in their history, they certainly don't have the level of experience that Ferrari does.
That BMW 528i looks like the teleporter beaming accident at the beginning of the first Star Trek Movie.
As for Stephan's Enzo, why does the reported speed keep creeping up and up? I doubt he was going more than 100. "196" is a ridiculous claim, impossible to even achieve that speed on that kind of road.
@nytmare: 1.) Have you been on that road? 2.) Have you been on that road in a really fast car?
I have... and there are a few sections where you can really get some serious speed going - before hitting a curve & have it all turn into shit if you're not careful and/or don't know what I call the "bog-down points"
I guess what I'm saying is: I would not be surprised at any speed reported in that particular car on that roadway.
Last January 5 kids were killed in an M5 in Florida after they drove off the end of runway. IIRC they estimated the speed to be well in excess of 160. I'm sure others know the details better than I.
@exartist: I've read that same story. Basically, it was a young driver who didn't know anything about breaking distance and the distance-illusion created by high speeds, so the car was basically lauched from that hill into the tree. Truly tragic and the reason you never give a young person the keys to a car like that.
Sadly, the Ford GT doesn't escape unscathed either. There have been approximately 50 Ford GT wrecks that have appeared on Wrecked Exotics in the last few years. This particular one occurred in Cleveland. A 19-year old kid crashed into a telephone pole.
@SeanKHotay: That's why I always avoid debris fields when I'm out hooning. From my limited understanding, they basically just make your car fall apart as you drive through minding your own business.
I wake up in the mornin'
And I raise my weary head
I got an old coat for a pillow
And the earth was last night's bed
I don't know where I'm goin'
Only God knows where I've been
I'm a devil on the run
A six gun lover
A candle in the wind, yeah
You're brought into this world
But they say you're born in sin
Well at least they've given me something
I didn't have to steal or have to win
Well, they tell me that I'm wanted
Yeah I'm a wanted man
I'm colt in your stable
I'm what Cain was to Able
Mister catch me if you can
I'm goin' down in a blaze of glory
(Down)
Take me now but know the truth
I'm goin' down in a blaze of glory
(Down)
Lord I never drew first
But I drew first blood
I'm no one's son
Call me young gun
You ask about my conscience
And I offer you my soul
You ask if I'll grow to be a wise man
Well I ask if I'll grow old
You ask me if I known love
And what it's like to sing songs in the rain?
Well, I've seen love come
I've seen it shot down
I've seen it die in vain
Shot down in a blaze of glory
(Down)
Take me now but know the truth
But I'm going down in a blaze of glory
(Down)
Lord, I never drew first
But I drew first blood
I'm a devil's son
Call me young gun
Yeah
Each night I go to bed
I pray the Lord my soul to keep
No, I ain't lookin' for forgiveness
But before I'm six foot deep
Lord, I got to ask a favor
And I'll hope you'll understand
'Cause I've lived life to the fullest
Let this boy die like a man
Starin' down the bullet
Let me make my final stand
Shot down in a blaze of glory
(Down)
Take me now but know the truth
I'm going down in a blaze of glory
(Down)
Lord, I never drew first
But, I drew first blood
I'm no one's son
Call me young gun
I'm the young gun
Young gun, yea eee yea
Young gun

So, I've always wondered how do they determine the speed at impact from these? Were the speedometers intact in all cases? Or is this a case of big brother computer saving data? Or CSI reading skid marks?

@Jo Schmo has lost that commenting feeling: I think that is the one the guy kept writing about in Car and Driver. He had a bunch of miles (relatively speaking for an Enzo 50k+). I think he also bought a spare set of doors to make it a convertible/t-top. He wrote an article after the crash about what an idiot he was and was refusing pain meds to punish himself for destroying and Enzo. [www.autoblog.com]
This, kids, is why we don't argue things like, "The Aston Martin V8 Vantage is a piece of crap because it only goes 178mph. The 911 Turbo goes 191, so it's waaaaaaaaay better!"

I'd say the breaking distance on this M5 was about three feet....
