    They must be in a state with no open-container law. Otherwise I would discourage her from playing the auto-pundit drinking game while in the car.

    That's way bitchin', but will it allow the passenger to navigate via the on-board GPS.

    Having to hack the one in my wife's RX300 every time you start it is a pain.

    @das_borgen:

    Well, it's either go to the main menu, and press the top-left, bottom-left, top-left, bottom-left, then the top-right of the screen to allow on-the-fly navigation, or dig the Garmin out of my car's trunk.

    At least there is a hack for it. I'm tempted to not update it, even though the maps are old, 'cause it might "fix" this for me.

    @that ain't the way to have fun, son: good call, maybe try going to a dealer and get into a car with the updated map pack and see if the hack still works

    if so, then get your update on :)

    I've been through all those states (not Manitoba). I enjoy the wheatfields, cornfields, barns, livestock. I can watch videos or TV every night at home.

    Also, how could I backseat drive if I were viewing a screen?

    @RegalRegalia:

    Yep, Manitoba and Saskatchewan slam-dunk Kansas/Nebraska for flat, open space.

    It is neat seeing the soy fields blowing in a gentle breeze. They are typically uninterrupted to the horizon, so it does look water-like.

    All I want for Christmas is an E550 sedan with the following options:

    -Useless, complex, and heavy electronic doo-dads delete

    I understand that many people want the latest James Bond movie gadgets in their cars, and it's a good idea to cater to them.

    But you know what? Some of us want the latest car, and don't give a damn about gadgets as long as the car drives well. Delete the crap that we don't want, and it is cheaper for them to build the cars and for us to buy them, leading to a greater likelihood of increased car sales.

    Why is catering to us such a bad idea?

    @pauljones: +1000. Every company should offer a "Spartan" version. A/C and radio, that's it. If they work hard on exhaust note you can even ditch the radio.

    @Syrax: I'd add ABS to that list, as well as an actual, good old-fashion ignition key (none of this push-button crap) and a proper console shifter in place of that stupid little computer controller circle-peg-thingy.

    A very simple technology with a very complex implementation. And as much as I despise the needless technological complication of automobiles, this is truly ingenious, considering the market segment for which it is intended.

    @egoods: That's the hardest part of driving the R1 cars, I find. The line between "you aren't giving it enough gas in this corner and all your opponents are now passing you" and "too much gas, your car is now spinning at 250 rpm" is too fine for my fat fingers. I still refuse to use traction control though.

    It's one thing to camo the SLR as a Cerbera or the SLS as the Viper, but I didn't think they'd go far as to graft the Dodge Nitro face on a prototype.

    I love the very subtle Jalopnik decal on the side of the car. It is a promise from Mercedes to make this car light, pure, simple, and fun. Also, I much prefer this decal to the "Copyright Chris Doane/Brenda Priddy & Company" seen on some cars, and those weird floating KGP Photography chin spoilers.
