@Van Sarockin, rogue trebuchet:
It's OK, been here just three weeks, and in that time have made it from total newb to being on the verge of a star and subsequently demoted to sub-Minardi status for reasons unknown - I can take another demotion if you report me... this time I'll be on the level of the guy who knows a guy, who knows a guy, who knows a guy who delivers the newspaper to a guy who knows a guy who's related to a guy who works on the Minardi Pit Team.
@HoonThatFerrari-Now with no Star Outline!: Sure, they led you on with that " on the verge of a star " stuff, but it was just a scam. There's a seamy side to this place, and you just fell right into its clutches. Next thing you know you'll be pulling double shift's, pimping We's ass out on Woodward, whistling 33d&3d to yourself.
I used to think you had what it took. But this place'll use you up like yesterday's brake pads. And then it's out to the C4C death camp.
Wait a second, you know that guy? OMFG!!!!! Can I have your autograph?
I'm a forensic scientist, and having access to Criminology and case records is something I don't recommend unless you have a good gag reflex and a chum bucket handy.
For the record, NO, I don't watch CSI. That would be like a Bar Lawyer watching LA Law, or a Japanese street drifter watching 2F2F. Shit just don't go down like that.
Lame effort, guys. I'm really annoyed by this. It's fairly common knowledge among car nerds that an S63 costs waaaay more than 87k, as the numerous posts below to that effect confirm. This guy just has a random plate. It was obvious to a bunch of your readers. Soooo... why post this? Is it that the real price of an S63 didn't occur to you? If so, that's very lame for someone who is neck deep in cars every day. Is it that the price did occur to you, but you didn't feel like checking further on whether this was really a vanity plate? If so, that's very, very lame for anyone with journalistic credentials, even a blogger. Or is it that the price occurred to you, you suspected it wasn't a vanity plate, but nonetheless you thought you could get a cheap laugh at the expense of some person who owns a car you would probably normally describe as extremely cool? If that's it, then this post is way beyond lame and into the realm of coldly cynical.
Isn't this a site run for and especially by car enthusiasts, to celebrate car culture? Isn't this site supposed to applaud people who drive cool/rare/fast/unique/interesting cars unless and until they are proven to be douchebags? If I want to read that people who drive big, fast cars are generally dicks I'll read Mother Jones or the New York Times editorial page. When I come to Jalopnik, I want to read that people who drive big, fast cars are generally awesome. If even Jalopnik won't fight the good fight for an S63 as something grand, and for cars as something other than mere transportation appliances, then what's the point? Let's just all go right now and trade in our WRX's, Miatas and American muscle for Prii, Insights and Camrys.
@Forgetful - GT Junkie: Nope, the plate design is wrong for a New Jersey vanity plate (as others have pointed out below). This is just an S63 with whatever plate the DMV gave it.
@brownie demands JFG revival: Take a look on ebay motors for a s63 AMG and you will see 87k is where these are currently priced.
I think we're all in agreement that we appreciate and applaud "nice" cars and this certainly qualifies. I believe the major objection here is the tacky display of how much was paid in exchange for the vehicle.
Is an Enzo cool? How about telling everyone you see how much you paid for it before you even introduce yourself?
@now with double the ententre: Once again, for those of us who haven't actually read all the comments here: this is not a vanity plate. That is the standard New Jersey plate design, and in New Jersey, custom plates do not use the standard design.
Note that none of the custom plate designs have anything resembling the state's silhouette in the middle, like the standard design.
This just a car that got assigned this plate by the DMV. And the fact that people here continue to believe otherwise just demonstrates that this was a really bad post and ought to be corrected, and prominently. It's just pointless negative car karma in a world that already has more than enough to go around.
@brownie demands JFG revival: Take a look at #4 in the nj state site you linked to. The bottom right option looks like a standard plate.
This doesn't prove it's a vanity but it is possible.
@Hepcat_AU: '87 XJ-S V12. Didn't run when I got it, but it fired right up (rough) when I put in a new battery and plugged in the fuel pump. It's been running pretty well since the old fuel has been burned off, though the idle is a bit high. Now it needs a radiator, since the fan shattered and tore through the old one.
It's got some cosmetic issues, but nothing as bad as you'd expect for a 22 year old Jag that I picked up for $500. Though I have put about $400 worth of cheapo tires on it since buying it a couple of years ago.
Most of the electrics work, in spite of Joe Lucas, but the fuel use computer stopped working about a year ago. The cruise doesn't work, and the power antenna is stuck about halfway up (or halfway down, if you're a pessimist).
@smalleyxb122: that's different. i'm not talking about car guys discussing price. these random non-car people know my car is new, and rather than going to the manufacturer's website to look up the cost, they decide to ask me. it's a deal-breaker, btw.

A few years ago in San Diego.
POOH C
Can't remember if it was all one word, 2 or hyphenated. In any event, I couldn't believe they got it past the DMV.
