Want to get rid of the ugly wood? Choose the grey interior instead of the tan, and you get black ash instead. I don't really care if it's "tech" or not; I just think brown wood in an interior without any other brown looks horribly ugly.
It's amazing the technological innovations that arise when engineers are confronted with a problem to work around like "people like to sit high up". But when said innovations result in a pricetag of 43-55K, it's clear they aren't for me.
Next problem they should address: How can we make cars safer and more effective at wheelstands?
To me this car epitomizes what's wrong with so many cars today. Big and bloated and then overwrought with technology in an attempt to make up for all the mass. And that center console is a confusing clutter of buttons. Let's not even get into the awful looking grille.
you know how there are cars that come out and you don't like them at first... but eventually... those looks start to grow on you? and you end up really liking the looks of the car?
this is not one of those cars.
The funky footprint rear bumper on the first-gen is the only reason I've had to care about any MDX ever. Good to see they're carrying on the tradition, I guess.
It's great that it drives nicely and has all sorts of cool gizmos, but few people are going to buy a vehicle that they have to approach by walking backwards, because let's face it: calling this the best looking new Acura is like calling Ali G Sascha Baron Cohen's least outrageous alter ego.
-"...that tech solves so many of the problems inherent to the SUV form factor..."
Unfortunately, it doesn't solve the biggest one, which is unique to this model: a face that looks like the Son of Aztek.
-"Bizarrely, Acura has slathered the dash and console in an ugly wood trim that isn't in keeping with the otherwise tech-focused nature of the interior."
Not sure I understand your meaning. Are you saying that all / any wood trim clashes with a tech-laden interior? Or just this particular execution?
Personally, wood will always have its place in a luxury vehicle. "Tech" is as much defined by being "new" these days, as it is by function. The tech from 20 years ago is still "tech" and nobody complains about wood there. I actually like to see a tasteful mix of old and new, but the pictures provided doesn't offer enough to judge the execution of Acura's take on this.

Acura makes good cars. Acura knows technology. And somewhere in the nether regions of Acura's Skunk Works, there are a great many very smart and talented engineers who can combine the two.
And somewhere, tucked away in a padded box, is The Gimp.
He's in charge of styling.
The only lack in the MDX's front is a zipper tag hanging from the strangely compelling grille.
Also: "The MDX is arguably the most fun-to-drive, most comfortable and nicest looking car in Acura's range; "
That's like choosing the prettiest of the Miss Fatty-McWorld girls. Who is smoking crack now guys? You can't do that..
Well, whoop-dee-shit. It's a great large crossover-thing. Good. If you want one, that's fine. Some people do.
But I hope it's a complete and total flop, because that nose is uglier than a bag of smashed assholes, and I don't want to be driving down the road and have the sun glint off it right into my fucking eyes.
That is all.
@Wibble: The TL is arguably the worst of the bunch. And you're right, it's sad, because the previous generation of Acuras were bland but not unattractive, and the Integra, Legend, Vigor, etc. were downright classy.
Definitely past-tense on the Integra, though, now that the ricers got 'em all.
Wish all that tech solved some ugly. Who the fcuk actually approved these designs? I mean are there some martians/aliens working now in the design depts. of auto companies? I mean seriously?

If all cars were about the same height, though, it'd be more fair...

That busy, macho front clip reminds me of... the future!

I mean, look at the TL. A mate has the previous model, and it's not bad looking - understated, but fairly handsome.
The new model looks like it's been thrashed to within an inch of its life with an ugly stick.
I mean, I literally can't find an angle from which it doesn't look hideous:

Christ on a bike, it's ugly.
