2009 Mazda2 Three Door, Along With a Variety of Colors
The Mazda booth here at Geneva feels like a Mazda2 party and a whole bunch of colors were invited. Red, green, yellow, blue, white, gray... so in case you're in the market, that special color is probably here. The Mazda2 three door is is freshly unveiled for the European market here, and we're feelin' the little car. It may be a little awkward in pictures, but it has a Fiat 500 meetings Mazda6 feel to it that we like. The interior feels pretty well put together, even if the seat cloth could make a circus tumbler queesy. Now, about that Mazdaspeed version.

Will The Mazda2 Come To The US Bearing Diesels?
As of late, it has looked as though the Mazda2 will not be making a visit to America, due mostly to the presence of the Ford Fiesta in the US market. We'd gotten close to accepting this and just moving on when Mazda once again piqued our interest. Jim O'Sullivan, head of Mazda North America, mentioned at a lunch with reporters that Mazda was maybe considering bringing diesel Mazda2's over here. Sort of.More »

Possible Ford Ka Spotted Testing In Dearborn
You don't have to travel all the way to Southern Europe to see a New Ford Ka, as they're apparently running around Dearborn, Michigan (the Riviera of the Midwest, surely). It was lucky for us then that Jalopnik commenter TheMadAdder was around to snap some photos of a diminutive Ford hatchback as it weaved its way through traffic during the evening rush on the M-39. Another photo of the tiny hatch making its way across town below the jump. More »

New Mazda2 3-Door To Debut At Geneva On The Fourth Of March, We Want Five
We're already big fans of Mazda's mini hatch, the Mazda2. It's sharp looking, safe, relatively quick and unpretentious. Up until now, there's only been the five-door and sedan version, which recently debuted in China. Not wanting to let a segment go unfilled, Mazda will be debuting the Mazda2 three-dour hatchback at the Geneva Motor. They've only released this image of the rear three-quarter view, but it seems to retain all the hotness of the other versions and will come equipped with the same engines. Photos of the other variants and the press release below.More »

The Mazda Demio Chiara Edition
The Mazda Demio was named the RJC Japanese Car of the Year (not to be confused with the other Japanese Car of the Year) and to celebrate Mazda is releasing the Chiara Special Edition. For those that are unable to parlare Italiano, Chiara means bright. This special edition gets a special red paint sprinkled with gold flakes and an awesome interior, reminiscent of GTI's of yore. Available in FWD or e-4WD, it's yet another one of the little Japanese cars we wish they'd send over here sooner than later (we're looking at you Fields). Press release below the jump.More »
guangzhou international auto show
The new B-segment microcar for the brand all about Zoom-Zoom was just revealed at the 2007 Guangzhou International Auto Show in China. It's the new Mazda2 sedan and it'll be built by a partnership between Mazda, Ford and the Chinese automaker Changan Automobile Group. The joint venture has been given the kinda obvious, yet still a mouthful name Changan Ford Mazda Motors Limited. Although for the time being the Mazda2 sedan'll only be available in the Chinese market, it's what Mazda's calling a "global strategic model." Our bet is since we'd heard the Mazda2 would be the basis for a new Ford offering, this Chinese-built 98" wheelbase tiny car seems like it'll be fairly close to what we should be expecting from Ford come 2010 when they finally bring a B-segment car stateside. Oh and the dimensions? It's 168 inches long, 66.73 inches wide and 58.26 inches high. That's just a few inches longer, wider and taller than a '72 Datsun 240Z and approximately the same size as a Chevy Aveo — but with an exterior that's around ten times better looking.

Mazda Goes Miller Cycle With Demio for Japan
Watch out, diesel. Mazda says it's developed a Miller-cycle engine for the new Demio (Mazda2) in Japan that gets around 54 miles per gallon. The new JDM gas sipper goes on sale in July, sporting a 20 percent improvement in mileage over the current model, in combination with a continuously variable transmission. So what's this Miller cycle we speak of? Let's ask Wikipedia:"In the Miller cycle, the intake valve is left open longer than it would be in an Otto cycle engine. In effect, the compression stroke is two discrete cycles: the initial portion when the intake valve is open and final portion when the intake valve is closed. This two-stage intake stroke creates the so called "fifth" cycle that the Miller cycle introduces. As the piston initially moves upwards in what is traditionally the compression stroke, the charge is partially expelled back out the still-open intake valve."That's lovely. Problem is, the engines trade power for efficiency, which is usually compensated with a supercharger or electric motor (in the case of hybrids). Mazda's new Miller is naturally aspirated. Maybe the whole Zoom-Zoom thing accounts not stopping for gas. It's more of a net benefit thing.

Geneva Pre-Show: The New Mazda2
Mazda's new Mazda2 subcompact entry will debut tomorrow at the Geneva auto show, but press-kit images leaked over the weekend ahead of an official revealing. It's the first incarnation of Ford's new Fiesta platform, for which the company reportedly has global ambitions. With more swages and wrinkles than a mechanical shi-tsu, the Mazda2 cuts a knotty design profile. According to gun-jumper km77.com, the Mazda2 for Europe will come with a choice of two engines, a 1.3-liter (in 75 hp and 84 hp variants) and a 1.5-liter with 104 hp. Five-speed manual and an automatic of similar coggage will be available. As the newest images indicate, a sports appearance package anchored by a factory body kit will be on the option sheet when the Mazda2 debuts in Europe this summer. No word on a US release, but feel free to speculate wildly. More »

Will The Mazda2 Be The Ford2?
As we've said before, FoMoCo's all about needing a subcompact to compete with the hordes of Yaris, Fit and Aveos hitting the shores of this great nation of ours to service those looking for the small, affordable and not-at-all-fast. The current schedule for the b-segment micro-car, as you read first here, is a 2010 model year set to be released in calendar year 2009. It looks as though to either meet or exceed that deadline the Dearborn-based automaker's going to need to call in some help from the Japanese side of the globe-spanning silo-structured corporation. According to a webcast broadcast yesterday to Ford employees, the mane man for Ford NorAm, Mark "Movie Star" Fields, revealed that the subcompact will be based on the new Mazda2 that'll be revealed in Geneva over this next week. Hmm, didn't we speculate something like that a little while back? Why yes, I think we did. Gallery of the

Compact High: The New Mazda2
Mazda today revealed the redesigned, flame-surfaced subcompact that is its new Mazda2, ahead of its unveiling at the Geneva show next month. Built on Mazda-Ford's new global B1 platform, the new two is rumored to be headed to the US to compete with the Nissan Versa, Honda Fit and that Toyota that looks like a doorknob. Possibly by 2008, but more likely by 2009. [Thanks to Stephan for the tip.] More »

Spy Photos: More Mazda2
There's no question FoMoCo's trying hard to enhance its offering of b-segment "microcars" it's got sitting in the company's micro machine carry-all. We're assuming that in addition to the available-only-overseas Fiesta, the Mazda2 (aka Mazda Demio, Mazda 121, Mazda Metro and a whole host of other brand names) is going to play a key role in that effort. The little DY-platformed FWD sub-compact's been a big hit in the segment in all of its names in both the European and Asian markets. But will it show up here in the US market? We don't know, but let's let quick-to-the-shutter spy photog Brenda Priddy give you her take as she just caught some shots of what's probably the next Mazda2 undergoing cold weather testing in Sweden:"there has been some speculation that the third-generation Mazda2 may reach the States when it arrives for the 2008 model year. The upcoming Mazda2, which is an evolution of both the MX-Micro Sport Concept and the Sassou Concept from the 2005 Frankfurt Motor Show, should begin arriving in select markets late this summer."The 2008 model year sounds a wee bit earlier than when Mark Fields told us a b-segment would be arriving on these shores, but we were talking about the Ford brand in that conversation, weren't we? Spy Photos: Mazda2, Wagon Too
So yeah, Mazda's been working on a new, world-market subcompact based on the same platform (B1) as the Ford Fiesta sold in Europe and elsewhere. That car, spies have said, is the Mazda2, whose appearance in the US is fairly certain, though a version from Ford model is still rumored to be in the works. Said spies also say the Mazda2's set for launch later this year, along with a wagon version. The shots may be doctored, but the unknowns are unassailable. More »
