Unlike the competition, our version's actually better. Really.

Full Disclosure: Mazda wanted us to drive the Mazdaspeed3 so badly they flew me out to Monterey and put me up in a swanky hotel. They also fed me Lobster martinis, which are neither as satisfying as regular lobster nor as intoxicating as a regular martini.

Because Europeans are more likely to spend a lot of time close to the Speed3's 155 mph electronically limited top speed and tend to treat the sporty Mazda as a practical family car, it needs more stability than the US-spec vehicle. Enthusiast drivers here are more likely to exploit the performance on twisty mountain roads and are willing to make some compromises to do so, which means the Mazda USA engineers have been able to swap some stability for quicker handling.


That difference points to the Mazda's unique position within the American market, where it's really the only serious FWD hot hatch and is cross shopped more with cars like the Subaru WRX and Mitsubishi Ralliart. Europeans, spoiled with choices like the not-softened-for-America GTI, truly wonderful French cars like the Renault Clio Cup and the hotter-than-hell Ford Focus RS tend to treat the Mazda as a bit of an also-ran.

That second-rate status was created not by the 2.3-liter turbocharged engine — which remains largely unchanged for 2010 with 263 HP and 280 Lb-Ft of torque — but by the chassis, which exhibited a strong predilection for understeer and wasn't terribly agile by fast hatch standards. The boring styling also played a roll, but it at least gave the Mazda a certain sleeper appeal.

The new car adapts the regular Mazda3's happy new design, but makes that grin louder with a deeper front splitter, a huge hood scoop, a big wing and 18-inch wheels of the same design as those on the RX-8 R3. Driving the 2010 model on the roads around Laguna Seca, we really missed the old under-the-radar styling. Other journalists driving these roads the day before had seriously pissed off the local law enforcement by hitting three-figure speeds in residential neighborhoods and catching air in Mazda5s in a school zone. In response, the CHP swarmed the area with speed traps.

Thankfully, Mazda still makes cars in grey, so we grabbed one of those and slowly made our way to roads far, far away.

The new 3's chassis is now purportedly much stronger (although Mazda hesitates to put a percentage on that) allowing the fitment of stiffer springs and firmer dampers. Those changes actually appear to improve the ride by better controlling impacts and minimizing their invasiveness on the chassis, but that hasn't come at the expense of feel. Like other vehicles in the Mazda range, power steering is boosted by an electric motor, but unlike vehicles like the 2009 BMW Z4 this appears to increase rather than reduce steering feel. Geometry remains the same as the old model, just with upgraded componentry throughout.

Finally on some roads free of prying eyes and radar traps the new Speed3 responds to aggressive driving in a similar manner to the old one, albeit with more feel, more agility and, as a result, more speed. The engineers deliberately left in some torque steer rather than going overboard with power retardation in the early gears, but, while its still very noticeable, that sideways yank on the steering wheel now feels more like character and less like a dynamic limitation. Throw the car into a tight corner hard and it'll understeer, but a small lift works wonders to correct that. Even over heavily rutted tarmac it now puts its power down very effectively with a minimum of wheel spin.

Mazda has actually made gears 2 through 5 slightly taller which better suits the character of the torquey engine. Peak torque hits at 3,300 RPM while peak power is at 5,500. After that, the next 1,000 RPM is basically overrun. Thanks to the new gearing you can leave the car in third for most roads and sit happily in the broad power band. A peaky four-cylinder this is not.

Back at Laguna and what is now a pretty exciting road car is transformed into a competent if somewhat less exciting track car. The understeer that's still evident on less-than-perfect roads disappears on the smooth surface of Mazda Raceway, replaced with quick turn ins and good mid corner speeds. The faster uphill curves leave us wanting for a bit more power while the tight 2nd gear corner onto the main straight leaves the Speed3 struggling to put its torque down. Still, it's unflustered by the whole experience which leaves us to do some much needed concentrating on our lines. I think I finally have the right one through Rainey.

All the upgrades make the new model slightly more expensive than the old one at $23,195 before destination and delivery, but the thoroughness of the changes more than compensates for the thousand extra bucks or so. The 2010 Mazdaspeed3 is faster, more agile and more fun to drive than before. It's still not the best hot hatch in the world, but it is the best hot hatch Americans can buy.

<![CDATA[2010 Mazda3: First Drive]]> The Mazda3 is back and with some shiny new friends. It seems Mazda has brought on a crew of Bedazzlers to ruthlessly attack every 2010 Mazda3 with sparkling injustice.

Full Disclosure: Mazda flew me out to a ritzy Laguna Beach resort, fed me mountains of delicious food and allowed for carte blanche access to the minibar. It was a tiny bottle pogrom, more or less.

For those not in the know, the Bedazzler, a kitschy rhinestone-applying device that your mom probably used as an unpopularization tool, to great effect, by fastening sparkling kitty cats and ladybugs to all of your favorite tees and then sending your sparkling ass to school.

The new Mazda3 has no rhinestones or sparklecats, but the top-of-the line S Grand Touring comes loaded with automatic headlights, rain sensing wipers, bi-xenon headlamps, Adaptive Front Lighting (AFS), Dual zone climate control, heated seats, heated mirrors with integrated turn signals, Bluetooth everything, Ford-like interior lighting, leather, full-color navigation, Sirius satellite radio, 8-way power drivers seat and a blasting Bose Centerpoint sound system. These are typically features reserved for high-end Cadillacs and Lexi, right? Never on a sub-compact and surely not on a Mazda. These are the folks that have brought us the near-naked MX-5 through all these years — and it has stayed simple and beautiful. Has Mazda gone soft?

The scene is southern California. We're zooming past fields of grapes, acres upon acres of obsessively arranged rows. We're neatly packed into a Mazda3s Grand Touring GT with every widget in the book. After descending from the steep curves of the Ortega Highway, we glide to a stop at a four-way intersection and get a lay of the land. After a brief moment of stillness, our wake catches up to us and washes our noses with the scent of hot, steaming brake linings. This is to be expected as we've just hot lapped just about every cliffside curve the area of Temecula has to offer.

I'm piloting this bright red 5-door packed with auto journos. Ease into the gas, release the easy clutch and we're gone. The standard 6-speed manual clicks into each gear with just a breeze of effort, but the action is intentional and predictable. Our 167 HP 2.5 L four-pot is a rev-happy, strong mill with proper gearing, all while returning 21 MPG in the city and 29 MPG on the highway; it'll hit 60 in 7.9 seconds and continue on to a 117 MPH top speed. The other option is an anemic 148 HP 2.0 L bringing in a frugal 25 MPG in the city and 33 on the highway. Before long, we're ascending another rocky hill only to slide down the other side into another sharply graded turn. The all-season Yokohama Avis tires are squawking in displeasure as they're twisted and torqued to meet the demands of the 3,005-pound hatch. With a slight mid-turn lift throttle, the rear end comes around and tries the limits of the center dividing line, briefly chattering on the rumble strips. For a front-wheel drive car, this little hatch has plenty of rear-ended aggression. Even on some of the most treacherous mountain passes, the 3 totally resists understeer. Usually reserved for the most perfectly balanced rear-drive sports cars, the fresh 3 has excellent front bite and lightning fast turn-in. You'll actually oversteer before it'll let the front tires go. All this isn't down to any fancy new technology, just perfectly specced suspension. The single downside of the driving experience was solely attributed to the pedestrian tires. The properly calibrated suspension simply overloaded the budget-conscious Yokos to a large effect. We're hoping this malady is corrected in spades once the Mazdaspeed3 hits the scene. With this new car as a starting point, the next Speed should be an absolute terror.

As we leave the rocky driving paradise and re-enter the boring city, we get a chance to poke around the interior. Gentle curves play intricate games on the dashboard while ultimately tying everything together for the driver. Special attention was paid towards the driver's natural cone of sight as everything vital is situated within range while looking at the road. Our only major qualm with the control interface is the extremely difficult to navigate navigation and radio controls. The navigation, while a good intention, is total crap. It feels like an ancient, digitized version of Honda's "scrolling map" system of the ‘80s. The screen, even in high-contrast black and white in the lower models, offers very little information and is solely controlled by a dumpy joystick on the steering wheel. Whereas the BMW iDrive of old was overly complicated, the Mazda3's navigation is over simplified to the point of unusability. A good standard of quality would be the $100 TomTom One LE. I can safely assert that a person would be better off skipping the Nav option and sticking Tom on their dashboard. The controls for the satellite radio aren't intrinsically bad, but the one-line display is trash. You'll find yourself stumbling between stations for long minutes before eventually memorizing the 100+ station line-up for quick selection.


The Mazda3, after all the sliding around the mountains and poking the interior, leaves us feeling a bit Bedazzled. Imagine your favorite tee, maybe some vintage shirt in perfect condition. A Boz Scaggs screen print. The shirt fits perfectly, great fabric and impresses the ladies in the way only Scaggs could. Overnight, your mom snags your Scaggs out of the closet and molests it with one of her many Bedazzlers she's collected over the years. You end up wearing the tee to school without noticing her sparkly edits. Your friends quickly catch on, and shockingly, they applaud your fresh taste and daring fashion. You feel slightly cheap and ultimately sullied. Boz was so fresh before the Great Sequinning. Now, people only pay attention to the flashing adornments stuck to his once naturally beautiful eyes.

The new Mazda3 is a bit like that tee. In its previous iteration, it was a superb driver's car with very little in the way of excessive creature comforts. The weight and price was kept very low for the offering and enthusiasts quickly picked up on its winning formula en masse. What was once a stellar econobox still is, but now it doesn't hide its substance beneath a bland exterior. While that incredibly fun, economical chassis is still there and responsive as ever, the superfluous accessories tacked onto it are achieving greater fanfare than the car itself. As stated previously, we're staring towards the future for the return of the Speed3, which should herald the same car - plus power, minus fluff. The Great Undazzling, if you will.

MAZDA ANNOUNCES PRICING ON ALL-NEW 2010 MAZDA3

IRVINE, Calif., February 17, 2009 - In an economy where value-for-dollar is more important than ever, the all-new 2010 MAZDA3 proves that good things do come in small packages - and can be affordable too. Mazda North American Operations (MNAO) today announced pricing for its much-anticipated sport compact. And, like all Mazdas, the new 2.5-liter engine has plenty of Zoom-Zoom - a must for an eco-conscious driving enthusiast. The 2.5-liter engine pushes out 167 horsepower and 168 lb.-ft. of torque - 13 more horsepower and 18 more lb.-ft. of torque than the 2.3-liter it replaces - yet maintains a competitive fuel economy of 22/29 (city/highway).

Sex sells and no one has more meaningless sex than college students, meaning Mazda Canada is spot on with this somewhat cheeky advertisement for their graduate reward program. As with many car companies, Mazda offers $500 off for any recent college graduates.

In this ad, they're trying to raise sales by raising some eyebrows be essentially rewarding grads for "making poutine" if you know what we mean. If only they could somehow incorporate the other frequent extracurricular college activity into their marketing.

It's not a particularly well-designed advertisement, though we credit them for engaging copy. If our college experience was any guide, co-ed sex is all about the Zoom-Zoom.

<![CDATA[2010 Mazdaspeed3, Mazda3 i-Stop Heading To Geneva]]> Mazda is set to unveil two diametric opposites at the Geneva Motor Show: the new-and-frugal Mazda3 i-Stop and more importantly to us gearheads, the rip-snorting 2.3-liter turbocharged all-new 2010 Mazdaspeed3.

Of course, Mazda's actually unveiling the non-U.S. version of the 2010 Mazdaspeed3 — the 2010 Mazda3 MPS (also called the Mazdaspeed Axela). But expect to see something similar for the U.S. market with the longer name in the near future. But first, let's talk about the more eco-friendly Mazda3. The i-Stop is designed to be a fuel miser, with the MZR 2.0 Direct Injection Spark Ignition engine with Mazda's i-stop system, which pulls off stop/start duties to save gas. The result is a 12% increase in fuel economy over the standard model.

That's nice and all, but it's the hood-scooped and scorching red Mazda3 MPS (Mazdaspeed3) with the four cylinder MZR 2.3-liter DISI Turbo engine which piques our interest. If the last model was any indication this should be a hoot of a car on the street and at the track. Expect complete details when the cars are unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in March.

<![CDATA[2010 Mazda3 MPS Mazdaspeed: Red, Mean And Geneva-Bound]]> The 2010 Mazda3 isn't yet for sale and already Mazda is prepping the next MPS, .a.k.a. the Mazdaspeed3, for the Geneva Motor Show.

Following on the heals of the 2010 Mazda3 hatchback reveal, Mazda is planning to bring their latest hot-hatch Mazdaspeed version to Geneva. According to sources, the European "MPS" version will get a turbocharged 2.3-Liter engine while the American version will get the 2.5-Liter engine. Despite the differences, both should produce around 268 HP.

There are other rumors out there, including the possibility of the FWD suspension system from the Euro Ford Focus RS. From these spy photos, featured on MotorAuthority, it's obvious the new hatch is going to get the typical visual accessories including a hoodscoop, larger wheels, more aggressive front bumper, large spoiler and rocker body panels.

All-New Mazda3 5-Door Hatchback

The sports compact that delivers exhilarating driving pleasure

When the first-generation Mazda3 was released, it introduced a level of driving pleasure and a sense of quality which exceeded its class. Five years later, total sales have surpassed 1.8 million units and the Mazda3 has won a total of 90 automobile awards around the globe.

The all-new Mazda3 builds on the virtues of the first generation and reflects increasing concern with environmental issues, the rapid growth of car ownership and fresh diversity in the criteria people use to value cars.

Development of the all-new Mazda3 was carried out by R&D staff in Japan, the USA and Europe working together to reflect Mazda’s long-term vision for technology development, “Sustainable Zoom-Zoom,” which aims to achieve harmony between driving pleasure and environmental and safety features. As a result, the all-new Mazda3 evolves the original model’s acclaimed sporty driving and design, and achieves top class environmental and safety performance.

Program Manager Yoshiyuki Maeda says, “We focused on achieving an exhilarating experience that drivers would sense directly. We targeted dynamic driving performance that responds to the driver’s intention and excellent environmental and safety features that offer pride and confidence whenever the driver is behind the wheel. In order to create exhilaration in every element of the vehicle, we worked to enhance each aspect of the driving quality.”

Design: celebrating Mazda3’s established identity while making it more expressive
The design concept for the all-new Mazda3 was “remaining faithful to an inherited identity while evolving the design to make it more expressive”. While retaining some of the original model’s dynamic lines, richer expression was sought to create a more emotional design. As a result, Mazda achieved a powerful, fresh design that enhances recognition of Mazda3’s unique value.

Exterior design – expressive and emotional styling
A distinctive new frontal treatment is formed by the 5-point grille and intakes at the front corners. These design cues combine with the sculpted shape of the hood and the bold, expressive lines that connect the hood to the A-pillars. All the lines seem to flow into the centre just below the 5-point grille, which creates a stronger expression of power and dynamism.

From the side, the front fender line smoothly morphs into the beltline, clearly identifying the vehicle as a Mazda and communicating dynamism. The line of the side sill curves up and seems to connect with the rear spoiler to emphasise the vehicle’s compact size and express its agility. In order to make the surface more expressive, Mazda designers slightly elaborated the depth of the hood edge, front fenders and the three-dimensional shape of the protruding body sides, carefully crafting curves that subtly reflect changes in natural light.

The rear view boasts a sporty design with wide stance. The strongest features are the protruding shoulders and emphasised centre-focus design. This concept was carried over from the original Mazda3 and made bolder to represent expressiveness. All the lines of the rear view are designed to concentrate on the brand symbol in the centre. The impressive C-pillar design, which was also inherited from the first-generation Mazda3, was made more prominent, thanks to Mazda’s expertise in stamping technology.

Interior design – sophisticated, sporty, and high quality
Inside the all-new Mazda3 is a sporty yet highly refined cabin. The dashboard sweeps out from the centre toward both sides with dynamic flair as though it is flexing powerful muscles. The large centre display and controls are laid out around the driver to deliver just the right feeling of snugness. The angle of the centre panel was adjusted after careful analysis of the driver’s hand movements, producing a more stylish and dynamic design. A soft, wood grained surface with minimised parting lines on the top of the dashboard enhances the interior quality. The new interactive lighting control enhances the driver’s connection with the vehicle.

Driving dynamics - The evolution to a more sophisticated sporty ride
The development theme for the all-new Mazda3’s dynamic performance was “exhilarating driving”. It refers to the satisfaction derived when a car acts in perfect concert with the driver’s intentions. It could also be described as the sense of accomplishment derived when the driver can handle the car easily and have it respond exactly as desired to their will.

Toward this end, the development team didn’t settle for merely adding small changes to the already high levels of body rigidity and driving performance. Rather, they also made every effort to completely eliminate all negative aspects of NVH, from the engine noise, vibration in the body and road noise. At the same time, the team retained all positive aspects including the sound of the engine, the sense of acceleration, the quality of brake response, the feel of the steering and the overall road holding sensations.

Powertrains for all driving experiences
The four Mazda3 powertrains combine Mazda’s typical Zoom-Zoom driving experience with excellent environmental performance to provide exhilarating driving.

The new Mazda3 engine line up has been tailored for European customers and now includes the newly developed MZR-CD 2.2-litre turbo diesel engine, carried over from the all-new Mazda6, in addition to the gasoline MZR-1.6-litre and 2.0-litre (now with the option of a 5-speed Activematic transmission), and the MZ-CD 1.6-litre turbo diesel.

A high-performance clean diesel engine with top class output, fuel economy and refinement, the 2.2-litre engine will be offered in two variants, a high power version with a maximum torque of 400 Nm at 1,800-3,000 rpm and an output of 136 kW (185 PS) at 3500 rpm, and a standard power version with a maximum torque of 360 Nm at 1,800-2,600 rpm and an output of 110 kW (150 PS) at 3500 rpm.

Both versions have outstanding clean emissions performance, comply with the Euro Stage 5 regulations and feature a Mazda developed unique Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) technology for more efficient regeneration. Fuel economy is also greatly improved by 7 to 10 percent (compared to the MZR-CD 2.0-litre engine in the previous model), attaining 5.4 l/100 km for the standard power version and 5.6 l/100 km for the high power version.

Catalyst that uses single nanotechnology (for gasoline engines)
Mazda’s gasoline engine underfloor catalyst is the world’s first vehicle catalyst to be constructed with single nanotechnology, which controls even finer materials structures than nanotechnology. It is used to embed individual particles of precious metals, which are less than 5 nanometers in diameter, into the catalyst base material. This new development enables Mazda to reduce the amount of expensive precious metals such as platinum and palladium by 70 to 90 percent without impairing catalyst performance. This new catalyst is an important part of Mazda’s efforts to reduce reliance on limited resources.

Power steering, suspension and brake systems
To deliver just the right balance between fuel economy, steering weight, feel and stability, all configurations of the all-new Madza3 are equipped with the Electro-Hydraulic Power Assist Steering system (EHPAS) that has earned high acclaim on the current Mazda3.

The suspension is also based on the current Mazda3 system, and has been enhanced to ensure even crisper responses to steering wheel inputs, and also to improve roll control and maintain a flatter ride by strengthening the suspension damping. In the brake system, the vacuum booster has been retuned and the feeling of initial brake application has been optimised. The overall result is outstanding response and reassuring linearity under all braking conditions.

High rigidity bodyshell
The basic development concept for the bodyshell of the all-new Mazda3 was to improve the overall balance of the body’s rigidity and ensure it firmly absorbs the reaction force of the dampers. To this end, particular attention went to reinforcing the area around the front and rear suspension mounts and the joint sections in each corner, which are subjected to the greater stress.

Structural adhesive was used to strengthen the joints for the front and rear suspension towers, and spot welding was added to reinforce the joints of the door openings. The result is a substantial improvement in rigidity and body hysteresis (the degree of car body deformation due to repeated applications of torsional load).

Class-leading aerodynamics
Mazda adopted a new approach, called “airflow management”, to optimally control the flow of air over, under and around the all-new Mazda3. Conventional car designs create a large amount of drag during the process of taking in ambient air (for cooling) and venting warm air that adversely affects aerodynamic performance and fuel economy.

However, the all-new Mazda3 does not take in excess air and thereby minimises drag. One specific example is the upper and lower front grille openings, which concentrate ram pressure (wind pressure) in a manner that eases the intake of air and directs it effectively to cool the engine. Additionally, the front corners of the upper body were reshaped and rounded front tyre deflectors were added to control the flow of air along the vehicle’s sides.

As a result, the drag coefficient for the European specification 5-door hatchback and 4-door saloon are respectively 0.30 and 0.28 and are now among the best in the segment. These measures helped the engineers attain top-class levels for wind noise reduction, high speed stability and fuel economy.

Cabin environment – sense of oneness between car and driver
Aboard the all-new Mazda3 is a new ‘Human Machine Interface’ that contributes to the sense of oneness between the car and driver – the Jinba Ittai for which the Mazda MX-5 roadster is famed. The cabin interior is designed to allow the driver to concentrate on driving and also appreciate the level of quality in both design and the materials used.

A sporty cockpit that improves functional beauty
The new ‘zone layout’ approach focuses on improving visibility and creating more intuitive controls which provide “a sense of the car and driver as one” and “a reassuring sense of confidence that frees the driver to concentrate on driving”.

First, the new Mazda3 development team integrated the information display and positioned it towards the front in the optimal ‘zone’. This placed the information necessary while driving where it can be seen with the least amount of eye movement. Next, the engineers placed all the controls and switches within a single ‘zone’ closer to the driver’s hands. Designing the cockpit with controls and information display in separate zones frees the driver to concentrate on driving.

Multi information display (MID)
Based on the concept of the zone layout, Mazda developed the Multi Information Display (MID). It clearly shows information on all the equipment needed while driving, such as the trip computer, audio system and compact GPS system (optional), which can be operated easily by switches mounted on the steering wheel.

Seats that fit better, provide greater support and are more functional
The raised sides on the front of the seat cushions were made 20mm larger than on the first generation Mazda3 to increase the leg support for a better fit. The seat backs were also extended by 35mm to better support the occupant’s posture. Seat position adjustment controls were also evolved. The new power seat has a 3-position memory function. Upon approaching the car, the driver’s seat automatically adjusts to the settings chosen by up to three different drivers by recognising the code of the key fob. High-grade models feature standard sports seats.

New welcoming functionalities
The interactive lighting control increases anticipation of a Zoom-Zoom driving experience. For example, when the driver unlocks the car door, the cockpit spotlight, room lamp and lights in the door handles illuminate in sequence, along with the instruments and centre display, to gently welcome the driver and passengers (depending on grade). The illumination even responds when the driver operates the controls, strengthening the interactive communication between driver and car.

Substantially reduced road and wind noise
Many improvements were made to structural rigidity and powertrain NVH performance to provide a quieter, more pleasant ride, including the reduction of high frequency booming noise sometimes heard when decelerating, while further evolving a sporty engine note.

Increasing the rigidity of components and joints also helped to deliver a quieter ride which is now among the class leaders. The sound pressure level of road noise was curtailed by 6-11 percent over the previous model, and wind noise was reduced by approximately 6 percent, to 59.0 dB at 100 km/h with a 5 m/s crosswind – placing the all-new Mazda3 among the quietest cars in the C-segment.

Advanced safety and environmental performance

Safety
As well as improving passive safety technologies, Mazda focused on enhancing active safety equipment that supports the recognition and avoidance of hazards. Specifically, the cutting-edge active safety technologies featured on the all-new Mazda3 include ABS, Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD), Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) and Emergency Stop Signalling system (ESS) as standard equipment, and bi-xenon headlights with a pivoting adaptive front lighting system as an option.

New optional features (depending on grade) include the Rear Vehicle Monitoring system (RVM), Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) and Heated Windscreen. The new model’s passive safety systems are comprehensive and include Mazda proprietary highly-rigid and safe vehicle body technology, the Mazda Advanced Impact-energy Distribution and Absorption System, as well as front seat active headrests and a complement of six airbags, placing the all-new Mazda3 at the top level for occupant safety.

Environmental performance
The all-new Mazda3 offers excellent environmental performance with many models conforming to Euro Stage5 regulations, or Euro Stage4 for the 1.6-litre gasoline and diesel engines. This level of clean emissions was achieved thanks to innovations including the introduction of the new MZR-CD 2.2L diesel engine, optimised engine control, Mazda’s Electro-Hydraulic Power Assisted Steering system (EHPAS), outstanding low-drag aerodynamics and comprehensive weight reduction efforts. The MZR-CD 2.2L standard power version is approximately 10 percent more efficient than the MZR-CD 2.0-litre engine of the first-generation Mazda3.

Promoting vehicle recycling
Mazda has achieved recyclability ratios of over 90 percent with some of its product line-up. Beginning in 2005, Mazda also became the first company in the auto industry to fully implement ‘bumper-to-bumper recycling’ that recycles material from damaged bumpers. Additionally, Mazda has completely eliminated the use of lead, hexavalent chromium, cadmium and mercury, with the exception of exempt parts.

Mazda led the motor industry by being the first to adopt a low-VOC sealer that reduces toluene emissions to less than one tenth of conventional sealers. Furthermore, all of Mazda’s domestic production sites in Japan have attained ISO 14001 certification.

<![CDATA[2010 Mazda3 Hatchback Spied By Mazda]]> While the 2010 Mazda3 sedan is all smiles, we're reserving our grins for the Mazda3 hatchback. This is why we're so pleased Mazda's press people provided us with what has to be the most beautiful set of spy photos we've ever seen. Rather than leaving the job of snapping photos of the new Mazda3 con camo to the quick shutters of KGP, the press office hired someone to make an entire set of glamour shots of the covered hatch crossing Iceland. The new Mazda3 looks sporty in person and, from what we can see, the hatch looks just as sporty.

The new hatch, like the sedan, should get either the 2.0-liter four cylinder engine with 148 HP and 135 lb-ft of torque or a new 2.5-liter four pumping out a sweet 167 HP and 168 lb-ft of torque. Do you want transmission choices? Mazda will let you have a five-speed automanual, five-speed manual or glorious six-speed gearbox. Unfortunately, you're still likely to be limited to one transmission per car.

existing visual identity while evolving its appearance with richer, bolder design
strokes. Infusing each subsequent new model with more emotional aesthetics is a
longstanding Mazda tradition. The key Mazda3 exterior design highlights are:
• A move toward a more unified Mazda global “family face”
• A reinforced frontal identity which integrates the lower air intake with a more
emphatic and instantly recognizable five-point grille
• To stress power and dynamism, major design elements focus on or flow
toward the vehicle’s central axis. At the front, fascia lines converge on the
center-point at the bottom of the grille. At the rear, the decklid’s surface has a
distinctive center crease
• The compact cabin, high deck surfaces, and flowing C-pillar features were
inspired by the classic coupe profile, as seen on the 2009 MAZDA6
• Hood and side surfaces are shaped to reflect light and physical surroundings
• Subtle wedge-shaped and curving side character lines shared with other

INTERIOR DESIGN HIGH QUALITY, SOPHISTICATED, AND SPORTY
Inside, the new Mazda3 offers a sporty yet highly refined cabin. As if taut muscles lie
within, the dash sweeps dramatically from its center to the cabin’s sidewalls. The
large gauge cluster and center stack are positioned to tightly link the driver’s limbs
and senses to the car’s instruments and controls.

The slant of the instrument panel optimizes operating efficiency while providing an
attractive focal point. Range of motion studies helped position all controls at an ideal
reach. Key knobs and switches are positioned at the same level as the steering
wheel and the shifter. The Interior of the 2010 Mazda3 is based on our Human
Machine Interface concept.

All the information a driver needs is readily available in one concentrated area that
minimizes lapses of concentration on the road ahead. A Multi-Information Display is
positioned high on the center portion of the instrument panel to further minimize distraction. Navigation, audio, and trip computer information is provided in this handy
and easy-to-view location.

Front seat cushions have been extended by nearly an inch compared to the outgoing
car in order to provide improved thigh support. Backrests are 1.4-inches taller and
recontoured for improved driving posture. For the higher grade models, the upper
side bolsters have been canted inward for heightened torso restraint during
aggressive cornering. A three-position memory function has been added to cars
equipped with power seats – another first for the segment, and not offered at any
price on any competitors’ compact car. Upon approach to the car, the left-front seat
automatically adjusts to the settings chosen by up to three different drivers by
recognizing the code of the key fob.

To provide a top-quality cockpit appearance, the number of parting lines is minimized
and soft-touch surfaces show an elegant grained texture. An interactive lighting
system enhances the cabin’s ambience and sense of tranquility. Upon entry,
illumination rises in intensity in a programmed manner. Occupants are welcomed by
foot-well and door-handle lamps. Next, instrument cluster, center stack, audio and
climate controls brighten. When a driver or front seat occupant touches an audio or
AC switch, a change in illumination acknowledges that the command has been
received.

Dual-zone automatic air conditioning is an available Mazda3 option. Other special
features that distinguish this car from mundane compact sedans are: a Bose 10-
speaker premium surround sound system, connectivity for cell phones and portable
media players, a dock for iPods, and Sirius satellite radio. An advanced keyless entry
system includes push-button engine starting. The Mazda3 options list also includes
rain-sensing wipers, heated side mirrors, leather upholstery, and heated seats.

Overall, the details included in the new Mazda3 all contribute to the sense of quality
in the car. This is a vehicle that offers equipment, fit and finish simply not found in
other vehicles in this price range and class, and helps perfectly position Mazda3 for

POWER TO GO
SPIRITED POWERTRAINS ENGINEERED FOR MAXIMUM ZOOM-ZOOM,
MINIMAL CONSUMPTION
The MZR 2.0-liter four-in-line engine delivers 148 horsepower at 6500 rpm (PZEV =
144 @ 6500 rpm) and 135 lb-ft of torque at 4500 rpm (PZEV = 132 @ 4500 rpm).
Aluminum block and head construction saves weight. In the interests of power and
efficiency, four valves per cylinder are operated by dual overhead camshafts.

The new MZR 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine is borrowed from the larger all-new 2009
MAZDA6. It shares the same construction features of the 2.0-liter engine while
upping output to 167 horsepower at 6000 rpm (PZEV = 165 @ 6000 rpm) and 168 lb-
ft of torque at 4000 rpm (PZEV = 167 @ 4000 rpm). Both engines employ advanced
electronic throttle actuation. Mazda’s exclusive torque base control technology
provides a highly linear acceleration response to every change of throttle pedal
pressure.
A slick-shifting five-speed and six-speed manual transmission as well as a five-speed
electronically controlled Sport-AT automatic transmission are available depending on
the model. Sport-AT offers enthusiastic drivers the control of manual gear
engagement with the convenience and comfort of a conventional automatic.

Fuel economy is exemplary and was key to the vehicle’s development. The Mazda3
with 2.0-liter engine achieves 25 mpg in city driving with the manual transmission and
24 mpg with the automatic. The highway mileage with the 2.0-liter engine is 33 mpg
with either transmission. The Mazda3 with 2.5-liter engine also tops 20 mpg in all
conditions. Equipped with the six-speed manual transmission, its city rating is 21
mpg, rising to 22 mpg with the 5-speed automatic. The highway rating is 29 mpg
with either transmission. As the new Mazda3 is larger in every dimension – meeting
the requests and needs of customers – Mazda engineers worked hard to deliver a
vehicle that offers fuel economy on-par with the outgoing car.

To refine the acoustic qualities of the Mazda3 powertrains, extra attention was paid
to tuning each engine’s intake and exhaust system. Resonance chambers were
implemented to quiet certain sound frequencies while reinforcing others, achieving a
well mannered yet sporty voice during acceleration. The Mazda3 2.5-liter engine is
equipped with dual tailpipes and specially tuned mufflers to reduce mid-range boom
and objectionable high-frequency noise at high rpm.

Mazda3s certified to U.S. Federal exhaust emission standards are equipped with
catalytic converters employing advanced single nanotechnology. It is used to embed
individual particles of precious metals, which are less than five nanometers in
diameter, into the catalyst base material. This new development enables Mazda to
reduce the amount of expensive precious metals such as platinum and palladium by
70 to 90 percent without impairing catalyst performance. The catalyst is an important
part of Mazda’s efforts to reduce reliance on limited resources.

SOUND FOUNDATION
INCREASED STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY AND REDUCED AERODYNAMIC DRAG
CONTRIBUTE TO Mazda3’S POISE AND PERFORMANCE
The 2009 MAZDA6 offers one of the stiffest unibody structures on any Mazda vehicle.
Lessons learned in developing that car provided major strides in structural stiffness in
the new Mazda3. A stiff unibody provides a smoother ride, more confident handling,
and improved agility with virtually no increase in unibody weight.

Reengineered unibody joints and increased metal gauges in key areas help diminish
the transmission of road and powertrain noise into the passenger cabin. Suspension
anchor points are more substantial to provide the solid foundation needed to absorb
steering and suspension forces. In addition to welded attachments, suspension
towers are bonded to the surrounding unibody areas with structural adhesives. A
combination of welding and adhesives – also borrowed from the 2009 MAZDA6 – is
also used to increase the rigidity and collision deformation resistance at door opening
locations. The stiffer door design also improves the effectiveness of weather seals
that block moisture and noise from the interior.

A Mazda engineering approach called Aero Flow Management was used to optimize
the flow of air around and through Mazda3 body openings. Even though the front grille appears larger than before, it’s actually 20-percent smaller to ingest only the
amount of air needed for combustion and cooling. An air guide attached to the front
bumper directs the flow through the radiator where it’s most useful. At high speeds, a
bypass flap opens to minimize cooling fan drag.

Air flow along the Mazda3’s body sides was improved during wind tunnel testing by
placing deflectors near the tires and by carefully tuning the upper-forward corners of
the cabin. Subtle refinements in the shape of the A-pillars, exterior mirrors,
windshield wipers, and taillamps also contributed to the six-percent reduction in wind
noise levels. The 0.29 drag coefficient (Cd) achieved by Mazda engineers is one of
the lowest available in the compact class and highly beneficial to highway fuel
economy.

CLASS-LEADING CHASSIS DESIGN
SUBTLE YET COMPREHENSIVE REFINEMENTS ADVANCE THE COMPACT
CLASS’S SPORTIEST MODEL TO NEW HEIGHTS OF DRIVING FUN AND FUNCTION
There was no need to reinvent the Mazda3’s chassis design because the first
generation achieved distinction as the best available in the compact class in terms of
driving enjoyment, handling, and all around poise. Subtle and tuning changes were
the order of the day.

A rubber-isolated subframe in front supports the entire powertrain, the rack-and-
pinion steering system, and the lower attachments of the coil spring MacPherson
strut suspension. The independent multi-link rear suspension also uses coil springs
with one trailing arm, two lateral links, and one toe-control link per side. Four-wheel
power disc brakes with vented rotors in front and solid rotors in back are standard
equipment. Dynamic Stability Control and Traction Control are available on all
Mazda3s, standard on some trim levels.

To improve steering feel, the electro-hydraulic-assist rack-and-pinion steering gear is
now secured at three instead of two attachment locations. The additional mounting
point allowed a reduction in the stiffness of the bushings that support the steering
gear to diminish the vibration transmitted over rough pavement.

Resistance to body roll has been increased by recalibrating the monotube rear
dampers for tighter control and by switching to a new more substantial mounting
arrangement for the front and rear anti-roll bars. At the front of the new Mazda3,
lower control arms, the subframe, and mount bushings are all stiffer to improve both
steering response and cornering grip at the adhesion limit. A redesigned rear
suspension crossmember is both lighter and significantly stiffer, also for improved
handling.

The most notable change to the braking system is a new vacuum booster that
provides a more reassuring response to light pedal efforts without disturbing the
highly direct and linear feel inherited from the first-generation Mazda3. Adjustments
to the electronic brake force distribution programming enhance vehicle stability
during mixed braking and cornering maneuvers. Structural changes to the unibody
mentioned above help improve not only the rigidity of the brakes but also their
linearity during high-g stops.
The MAZDA3 with 2.0-liter engine is equipped with 10.9-inch diameter front rotors
and 10.4-inch diameter rear rotors while the more powerful 2.5-liter MAZDA3 is fitted
with 11.8-inch front and 11.0-inch rear rotors.

ACTIVE AND PASSIVE SAFETY SYSTEMS
THE NEW Mazda3 IS NOT ONLY FUN TO DRIVE, ITS HIGH LEVEL OF
MANEUVERABILITY IS ALSO THE BEST HEDGE AGAINST A COLLISION
Providing the Mazda3 driver with a better ability to avoid a collision by steering or
braking safely out of harm’s way is a fundamental aspect of Mazda’s product
development. Mazda’s engineers strongly believe that the best way to help protect
occupants in a crash is to engineer control systems in such a way that the crash is
avoided in the first place. Carefully tuned electro-hydraulic power steering, a highly
agile suspension system, and powerful disc brakes are standard Mazda3 features.
ABS, Dynamic Stability Control, and traction control are offered as optional
equipment.
Also, a new Adaptive Front Lighting System with self-leveling bi-xenon headlamps
has been added as standard on Grand Touring models. The Mazda3 is the first
compact offered for sale in the US with such an advanced lighting system.

But in rare instances, a collision cannot be avoided. To cover these circumstances,
all Mazda3s are constructed with a Triple-H unibody design employing efficient H-
shaped steel reinforcements in the floor, side structures, and roof. This approach to
energy absorption provides crush zones that better protect occupants from the
impact forces sustained during rollover, frontal, side, front-offset, angled, and rear
collisions. Six airbags and active head restraints are standard equipment.

ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP
THE Mazda3 ALSO DELIGHTS CUSTOMERS BY DEMONSTRATING REDUCED
ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT
Seemingly small changes can often deliver great gains. For example, the four-speed
automatic transmission was switched to a five-speed in 2.0-liter Mazda3 models, and
subtle aerodynamic improvements were made. The changes yielded a three-mpg
improvement (10%) in highway fuel economy.

To reduce consumption of hazardous materials, the new Mazda3 uses no lead in its
fuel tank, wiring harness, or undercoating. Hexavalent chromium and cadmium have
also been eliminated from the bill of materials. The toluene emissions from a new
joint sealing compound is 90-percent lower than before. Mazda’s manufacturing
plants adhere to the strictest environmental standards. These are the invisible parts
of Mazda’s Sustainable Zoom-Zoom initiatives.

Efforts are underway to increase the scope of recyclable materials from 80 to 90-
percent when a Mazda3 reaches the end of its useful life. Molded plastic parts are
already labeled with ISO identification marks to facilitate sorting and recycling.
Fascias, interior trim, and the instrument panel are made of polypropylene for easy
reuse in those markets that offer it. Recycled material has been used to manufacture
new plastic moldings for the past four years at Mazda.

HIROSHIMA, Japan—Mazda Motor Corporation has confirmed that the sedan version of the all-new Mazda3 (known as Mazda Axela in Japan), fully redesigned for the first time in 5 years, will be revealed at the Los Angeles Auto Show*1 on November 19, 2008.

The covers will be pulled off during Mazda’s press conference from 12:20 to 12:45 (local time) revealing the all-new Mazda3, the latest evolution of Mazda’s Zoom-Zoom spirit.

<![CDATA[2010 Mazda3 Caught Riding Dirty In Death Valley]]> We've just received some photos from Death Valley of the 2010 Mazda3 undergoing some extreme weather testing, which we hope well temporarily sate the appetites of those excited by the exceptional Mazda3 photoshops. A few details on the car are noticeable despite the heavy camouflaging, including a peak at the lower part of those nose, revealing the Nagare design language also present on the Mazda Kazamai Concept, something we were expecting.

The most intriguing details might be in the rear (nullus), where the Mazda's shoulders seem to be raised and the deck is clearly shortened compared to the current generation Mazda3. The taillights also appear to be more dramatic and aggressive, angling where the current lights merely wrap. <![CDATA[2010 Mazda3 Concept Fully Revealed... As A Photoshop]]> Remember yesterday's twin front and rear images of what we had assumed was the concept form for the 2010 Mazda3? Today we get nine full, high resolution walk-around photos of the handsome five door — and they're photoshopped. This amazing work was done by a chopper named Grif-1, and debuted on the Russian design site "Render." Grif-1 used 3D Studio Max and Photoshop CS3 to create a near-perfect execution of the Nagare design language, sprinkling in enough hints from previous concept cars it was easy to believe the car was real.

However, take a look in the high-resolution images at the LED tail lights and the detail in the grille. If that's not enough, come on, nobody builds a concept car with a reasonable sidewall ratio. While not as way-out-there as the 2018 Mazda3 design contest, could these be accurate renderings of what to expect from a concept of the next generation of Mazda's zoom-zoomin' C-segment hatchback? <![CDATA[European C1 Focus Bound For US, Prayers Being Answered After Five-Year Delay]]> Nary a week goes by where we aren't forced to look at another affordable, crisp-handling, attractive and unattainable European Ford Focus or derivative and recite that all too familiar prayer of "Ford, if you're listening, bring it over here" while trying to get excited about Bill Gates' Focus Coupe. Sure, we could have purchased a Mazda3 or Volvo S40, which are also based on the C1-platform, but that's besides the point. We wanted a cheap and toss-able blue oval hatch. Now it looks as though deliverance is nigh.

According to Ford's product czar Derrick Kuzak, a new Focus based on the C1 will be here eventually. This is going to allow for quicker production, reduced costs and blah blah blah. How long? It looks as though it'll be sometime in 2010 as a MY 2011 Focus ...maybe.That's apparently how long it takes to fit SYNC into it. Let's look at that wish list we made when the Euro C1 focus debuted:

<![CDATA[Mazda3 MPS To Tackle Targa Tasmania]]> What happens when you take the already devilish Mazdaspeed3 (better known as the Mazda3 MPS there) and throw it into the challenging Targa Tasmania? Madness. The folks at Mazda Motorsport are bringing their hot hatch to the 2008 race to compete with the hot pink Nissan GT-R. Unlike other rallies, this race features cars that are mostly stock and include all of the electric systems and upholstery that came with the original car. We imagine this makes it a bit more comfortable for Alister McRae and his co-driver.

This will be the eighth race for Mazda and the second for the MPS rally car. The vehicle features the stock 2.3-Liter direct injection turbo fourbanger that's good for 255 horsepower, routed through a six-speed manual transmission.
